Garmin Varia RCT715 Camera Review // GAME CHANGER!
Ғылым және технология
The new Garmin Varia RCT715 has a new inbuilt 1080p rear facing camera that has a host of options to allow you to record what's going on behind you. This is a game changer for cycle safety and in the short future could change how motorists treat cyclists on the road.
It also has all the features you're used to with the Garmin Varia range with the rear view radar and tail light. All in all a huge step in. the right direction to keep cyclists safer on the roads.

@@wiggle a front camera would be nice instead of the rubber streak as evidence and the word of the bystanders if you didn't manage to stop in time. Some have been complaining about "only 1080", well if you are really into doing videos you should have much better cameras for that and leave this Varia to recording the SOB drivers as evidence for the police. Definitely a few things that should be improved like the lens/light cover then again get a cover film for a smart phone and cut to size, if it gets scratched up then peel it off and put another one on.

@@chriscohlmeyer4735 Good points Chris. Some swapable lens covers would be a great idea. I can only imagine Garmin will introduce a front version camera to complete the setup but who knows! agree the 1080 is more than sufficient for "safety" purposes and a 4k output would just take up mega amounts of space!
10:11 we have plenty of local riders using Cycliq lights / camera. They’ve been around a long time so it’s nice to see Garmin catching up. I own the original rectangular Varia and the rtl515… hate cycling without them now 👍

The price point on this compared to the RTL515 is ridiculous considering the quality of the camera, if it was 4k it would really be worth it but for the extra £180 for that camera quality is so poor!

The maximum storage capacity is 128Gb. At 4K it would fill up in 30 minutes or so. Also, it would drain the battery much faster. The device is meant to start at the beginning of your ride and forget about it.
@MarcoTheGreat2008

You don't need 4k for this camera to function. 60fps is the lacking feature that is required for clarity of registration plates from fast-passing vehicles in low-light conditions.
@shaunmcdonough4642
2 жыл бұрын
@@MarcoTheGreat2008 Absolutely not! 4K on a small camera sensor equals poor quality and even worse low light performance. A good place to start by following the drone industry. I've got DJI Mini 2 drone. It's a really small drone with small camera sensor. Great video during the day, but horrible/non-existent video at night. The Mini 3 has just been released and they upped the sensor size. Much better night photography and also much better at capturing speed. Bigger sensors have bigger pixels which capture more light, which allow higher shutter speeds to stop motion blur. Can't make out someone's license at 100 meters. At some point the vehicle has get close enough to hit you. Last, both digital and optical stabilization do take a lot of processing, which run the battery down fast. The Go Pro DCR mentioned only has an hour long battery. This is probably from image stabilization and high resolution capture. Don't forget this also has to power radar and the light.

@@wiggle I’m one of the few that my v6 v2 is still working. The button covers are gone though. LOL.
The cycliq Gen 2 I have records either 1080 60fps or 30fps with image stabilisation. The garmin need image stabilisation to avoid camera shake. I use it conjunction with a Varia 515. Hopefully by the time I need to upgrade garmin will have improved the roofing quality. I’ve seen footage of its use at night and it’s awful. Same as the cycliq camera. Only worth buying if you don’t cycle at night. At least it’s a start Garmin.

Good question… I wouldn’t be 100% on this but surely this is road safety and couldn’t be more appropriate for a C2W!
I saw the review from DC Rainmaker for this device. This is a bit misleading as the device is not a go pro competitor rather it is for recording footage that could be use in case of an incident (hopefully not accident). So to compare this device using a go pro as its use case is imho incorrect. Please note, I am a Garmin user, II do find some of their product design choices annoying.

The lock on the camera mount is irrelevant because it’s still mounted with the rubber bands to the seat post. So what’s the point of the lock on the mount if you lose the camera WITH the mount.

For a premium "priced" product Garmin have certainly dropped the ball on so many basics and quite frankly obvious issues. This is a REAR mounted unit... how long will the lenses last considering that there is no cover and that this is a fixed lenses so debris, mud, stones, sealent... ALL everyday items will have this unit rendered an expensive brick in next to not time. 16GB card and 1080 res, sorry in this day and age that on a product in this price range is bordering on obnoxious. Access to the SD media is finicky... to say the least The app / features are really shocking poor, no discernible icon on your head set to let you know if the camera is on / recording / if indeed it has captured All in all pretty poor releasing a product that has so many issues I'll save my money till these basic issues are addressed. Love Varia but this just seems to be cashing in on those that don't have it already. Shame great shame.

Hi Joe, cycliq computer's seem to have worked ok so i'm hoping the 715 will do too. 16gb card is a bit stingy I agree and 4k would have been a nice touch. hoping we will see some firmware updates should address the problems with the app, but your right it shouldn't have these initial bugs at launch. Poping the SD card out into a computer seemed the easiest way to review the footage for sure. Thanks for the feedback👍

The "high" video resolution is so poor, probably due to lack of stabilization, that you cannot even make out a license plate. It was a waste of $400.
camera needs stabilizing at at minimum...... Cycliq camera are old and considerably better......and Garmin is producing new cycling camera products and has scrapped Garmin verb.... I would have brought one immediately but I guess I will wait for version 2
It needs the live view thats integral at this price point, it's aboslutely no different to looking at a rear view mirror which are fitted to nearly every vehicle on the road. This is a rubbish product with very old technology unfortunately, I really had high hopes.

Don't count on seeing stabilization. Stabilization takes a lot of processing which runs the battery down. Just look at similar products. Gopro comes to mind - 1.5 hr battery @ 4K & stabilization Cycliq - 4hrs @ 1k w/o stabilization. Garmin 715rlc - 6hrs w/ radar, lights & camera. I think that Garmin did a great job with this unit considering the restraints. Definitely not perfect, but this should work great safety and accident recording.

The camera isn't amazing by any standards... but to be fair it captures what you need for reading plates and crash scenarios. Hope that app gets an update which should fix the bugs, I took the card out when looking at the videos and it worked great.

4k will fill your memory really fast. Also, it would drain your battery probably faster than that. They have to increase the size of the battery by quite a bit and there goes the weight. Optical stabilization requires more processing and would have to less resolution than what the camera is capable of. Again, draining the battery.

Wait wait wait. There's no "live view"... because it's a distraction? You imply this is the reason Garmin did not give it to us. Did Garmin say that or did you fabricate a fact? This is dishonest journalism. You don't know the truth, but you push your imagination as if it were. I believe the reason for no "live view" is purely technical; a constant video feed would drain the battery.
