Great video and review, I have the Varia light best thing I’ve purchased for my bike , I think I will keep it like you said and buy a separate camera for my saddle and mount it on the rails, probably a go pro with removable battery so I can carry a spare too

Thank you, that was very helpful. I am just about to start cycling after a gap of 40 years, I'm teriffied! hence the reason I want to record for evidence if something does happen and I need it, I'm not into posting on social media. I decided to go with the Varia only because I have just got a Garmin 1040. Again, thanks, this is one of the best videos I have watched on the subject.

Thanks. It’s not really as scary as some make out but worth having the video - just in case.

I put the Varia 515 on the back of my seat bag. Fits just fine using the quarter turn mount with the rubber bands wrapped through the loop on the back of the bag. Been running it that way for over a year without issue. Thanks for the review! There's no way I'd ever buy this combined radar/light, AND camera 715 unit. A simple GoPro would be the way to go.

That’s a good way of doing it Bob, and perhaps cable ties for added security?

Great video! My dilemma is that I just recently placed a double water bottle holder onto my seat. I do have the Varia 515 and I love it. No more room for a rear camera. Looks like I might have to upgrade to the 715. Ouch!💰 This might take more investigation.

Had had a similar issue using the Varia 515 with a bikepacking bag in France (see my France Diaries videos). On eBay I found some of the twist-mounts with a rear clamp that I could clamp over a bag strap. You might be able to cl;amp over part of the bottle mount?

I love this review. I read DCR review and whilst it is valid, the only time I’m looking at footage from this camera is in court.

@@alwaysanotheradventure I’m training for a 70.3 and have returned to riding. My non negotiable to myself is that safety trumps cost so this was a no brainer for me. The ridiculous thing is, the course we cycle on is north from my home (cycle leg starts where I live) but the road is so dangerous for bikes that no one rides it at all prior to the event. Just far too dangerous (cars).

Had mine for about 3 weeks now, I did upgrade from the 515, which I sold on an auction site. I’m pretty pleased with it, Garmin need to amend the recording slot time as you highlighted, that’s the only real negative for me. Hopefully they will sort it out with an APP update. I do have a Wahoo head unit, it is compatible, but you don’t get all the features compared to a Garmin head unit, so you might want to factor that in when deciding which eco system you are going to buy in to.

Glad you like it. I was trying to point out the 'workarounds' needed for Wahoo and Hammerhead, and yes those are factors to bear in mind

My old Cyliq Fly 6 has just given up the ghost but only after it was waterlogged. My fault unfortunately. After 4 years of great use and great videos and a couple of successful convictions I'm on the look out for a new one. Can't justify the price tag on the Garmin but my quandary now is which new Cyliq to purchase forward or rear camera? I personally think the image stabilisation is far superior with the Cyliq. Great video and thanks for the info!

Personally I'd go for front first Stephen but I suppose a lot depends on where you ride.

Really useful to hear your thoughts on this. I've owned the standard Varia light/radar for several years and won't ride without it. But I've also just pulled the trigger and purchased the RCT715, as I'm keen to have some proof of the ever increasing number of idiot drivers who like to play Russian Roulette! Also one of my cycling buddies is buying my old one, so the outlay is not quite so painful.

I have the old varia. I find the new one something that is just too expensive to afford to replace if stolen or lost and maybe not as good as a camera from elsewhere for the purpose. Which I am interested in having for evidence purposes after some awful overtakes but cars recently.

You got to the point mate!! The plates may be read if they hit you, but if they overtake just 1 meter away, you can feel the lack of 60fps!! Is it really hard to read the plates, it does not even serve as I prove such a poor quality in court.

  • @alwaysanotheradventure

I put lanyards on most things but didn’t miss having one on the Varia because the mount is much more secure than the usual twist ones. But you’re right - it should have a lanyard. There are aftermarket ones on eBay.
