I couldn’t agree more, but they never will; you are not the walking Garmin billboard with it hidden up your sleeve? I imagine an equal market for a “dumb” Garmin screen-mirroring device to ride with on your bars. Your Fenix (or my Forerunner) are clever enough to do all the cycling metrics live, and a thin light screen could display everything on the bars via Bluetooth - the dream for triathletes especially.

I think a bit of a workaround could be to get an armband heart rate monitor (such as Polar Verity Sense), start an activity in your garmin that doesn't track GPS (to conserve battery) and keep it in your pocket throughout your working day. At the end, discard your activity, however you'll be left with a day of accurate heart rate data and hopefully body battery data. I've no solution for sleep tracking... I've got a Forerunner 245 and am considering doing something similar as I need to be "bare below the elbow" for work. This is one of the reasons I got a Whoop too- I wear it on my bicep (more accurate for me too). I like the insights you get every month as to what helps or hinders your recovery- this is also something I'd like to see with Garmin...

I have had my Whoop going on 7 months, for me, as long as it is on my wrist in the right spot (About 1 inch behind the wrist bone) it is spot on to my chest straps while Zwifting. Whoop also needs 4 weeks to build your "Base" data before it will be more accurate on the activity tracking and sleep. But it is not perfect for sure, and I have had minor issues... The biggest is the transition from sleep into the app actually showing me todays data, it always lags behind, even when I can see the data online. But I like my Whoop, but only as a one time a year payment. Nice Videos, love your channel and content. Ride on!

I did this same thing last summer, I got into the garmin environment via my bike computer and thought it would be nice to have all my health data in the same place. The Fenix was such a cool watch but with 5.5” wrists it felt like wearing a brick. So I got a garmin lily for everyday wear thinking I was pretty smart, only to find that the body battery doesn’t sync across devices. So now I have a Venu 2S which is still pretty big and doesn’t do all the cool things the fenix does but it was the best compromise I could find. Hopefully they will be able to make the fenix slimmer some day.

I toyed with the idea of whoop when upgrading from my Fenix 5+. After a lot of research decided to stick with Garmin (Enduro). Personally I decided wrist based monitoring is too vague anyway but during an activity linked to a HRM strap the Garmin is very good, even monitoring breathing rate. The wrist based is then good enough just for body battery etc. I can see theres a market for what you suggest though and I would hope Garmin are watching closely as whoop are a serious problem if people move over and can then use whatever watch they want. I do miss wearing one of my nice watches now and again if I want to keep monitoring.

I'm sure I read that somewhere in the depths of Garmin Connect, you can enable multiple (watch) devices, and set which one is the source of truth should you have both on, or a HR strap, at the same time. I don't have more than one Garmin watch, so I can't verify this. Maybe this was introduced after this video (or maybe I'm dreaming). Either way, does a HR strap solve this? Because there are straps that go around your upper forearm (e.g. Scosche Rhythm+). Or maybe just get a strap extension for the Fenix so you can put it around your upper arm?

I found this very interesting as I also like to wear a ‘normal’ watch most of the week but really like the body battery and sleep tracking Garmin offer. I have come up with a solution similar to your yellow band! Basically I have attached my vivosmart 4 to my leg using KT tape (just above where my work socks finish). It seems to track HR fine and will see how it performs on step counts and sleep tracking over the next few days. Keep up with the great videos 👏

Best thing about the Whoop was the slide on charger, wear+charge. Worst thing was that you have two watches on all the time, and one of them doesn’t even tell the time or count a step (Whoop). I now have a Garmin Fenix 5! Whoop data appears to be data rich but probably only comes into its own for team analysis. Like HRV but I think just having constant RHR is the best feature that you need for training state, plus sleep tracking - which you can get on lots of Garmin watches. Agree with the gap though, Garmin Quick-fix and Acti face changes goes some way helping on the looks front?!?

Could a heart rate strap be developed to monitor training load, sleep, recovery, body battery etc? I already wear one when I cycle for 4 hours and don't even notice so I don't think it would too difficult to wear 24/7 and would be very discrete. If it could actually store or just send the necessary data to the app would that work?

OK so I do exactly this with a Fenix 6X and Vivosmart 4. I wear the vs4 at night and the Fenix 6x during the day. You have to set the one that you're wearing to be the "preferred Activity Tracker" in connect under Devices> Activity Tracking then you kind of get some almost consistent data under body battery, although it's not perfect it's a workaround. 😊

Just tried a whoop for 3 weeks and have just cancelled subscription. 2 weeks worth of info which helpfully coincided with catching covid (which to be fair it picked up via HRV before I felt it) was enough for me to think: "huh". But that was about it. The data I really wanted - sleep in particular just wasn't accurate enough, and it thinks going for a moderate 10k run is maximum on the strain gauge. So pretty much every day hit the 21 mark, not making daily comparisons very easy. Everything else was just telling me what I already knew, and I spent 3 weeks repeatedly looking at my wrist for a clock that wasn't there. If it was cheaper +/- not subscription based I might be swayed, but not worth it imo. Interestingly having just cancelled it, whoop have said "don't bother sending the strap back". Which seems to indicate to me that the actual electronics aren't particularly high quality. I've just ordered a Samsung galaxy watch 4, so we'll see how that compares. Oh and thoroughly enjoyed the "huge thing" joke.

    1. If you were hitting 21 every day the whoop algorithm clearly hadn't calibrated properly to you yet... to be fair, it should have done by week 3 but still. 2. The reality is that the component cost of any smart device like this is very low especially when manufactured at scale. Other devices cost a lot unit price to make up for R&D and other huge overhead, not price of components. Whoop instead charges you a lot on a subscription model to recoup those same costs instead of a high unit price.

You can stick to the Vivo for your body battery but note that you need to take it off when you bike or run. The battery numbers will catch up after your workout as it detects HR variability. Your training status and effect will still come from your watch and computer. I'm pretty sure this would work. So sure that I'm now considering the Vivo purchase.

100% shure this doesnt work. I use the fenix 6 pro and various garmin bike computers. The problem comes with the softwear. For example if i ride my bike with a cheststrap and for example the 530 gps, the fenix6 wont show any heart rate data in my daily tracking, neither body battery changes for the time that i didnt wear it and used other devices to record. Same goes for the connect app when it comes to tracking: it doesnt show any heart rate data for the time of my exercise, only the recorded activity. As i always like to say about garmin: the hardware is the greatest possible thing you can get on the market, the software complete garbage

Give the whoop a chance to get a good baseline of how you're body is working. By the way, they don't recommend wearing it with the sensor on the inside of the wrist. Unless I've been wearing it wrong for the last 3 months. While it is not as accurate as a chest hr strap, I've found it to be "close enough" most of the time fory applications.

I hear you! This may get wordy and I apologise in advance. Sadly, I went down the line of absolute nonsense readings for 6 whole months with the whoop. I spent so many hours searching forums, getting Whoop tech support. I absolutely convinced myself that I may have been an outlier and it wasn’t working for me. I thought, so many ‘athletes’ wear them and they get great readings. As it turns out, the readings given by whoop, will always be as good as it technology, no matter how many times you can be convinced by the fancy UI, which is frankly garbage. I spent the remaining 4 months purchasing bicep bands wearing the stupid thing uncomfortably - day and night on the inside of the bicep . I would resent these people wearing it on the wrist and I just couldn’t. You mentioned the strange readings - that’s true, the band has numerous accelerometers within the sensor which artificially raises the HR reading. The Reason, because Whoops marketing machine wanted to capture cross fitters and what better way to sell a device is on the wrist of an influencer. Genius, right? Sadly, the whoop was less than useless for getting any reading and therefore, to be more inclusive, they increased the sensitivity of the accelerometer. Strangely, the HR sensor directly correlates to accelerometer and is influenced as such. If you’re patting the dog, cleaning the car or whatever you can do, vigorously moving your hand - Your HR will exponentially rise. Now, I’m betting they have released a FW update which desensitises this somewhat, but it exists. And because of the major discrepancies in daily strain, due to HR anomalies, the more the strain increases (or doesn’t as the case maybe) and less precise it becomes in its analysis of strain and recovery. The readings or suggestions thereafter are based around an historical data set and some ML for prediction. Even the fundamentals - HRV. Whoop does not take a full nights reading but takes one sample point when the RHR is at its most stable. If, at this point you move, the likely hood is that the HRV will be off and once again be wonky. The concept is good, but execution is dreadful. Garmin have refined the stress monitoring based around its constant HR reading and derived HRV - bear in mind, none of these wrist based devices will give an accurate HRV. But, you’re more likely to get a more precise reading from a watch that’s reading constantly, has a rough estimation of your fitness and recovery - I think it’s interface with Firstbeat Tech has really cemented it. Like I said, I agree, my 6x Sapphire is bulky, and a faff when you want a dress watch on, but the data I pull from it, IMHO is golden and pretty accurate. I always use Body battery and all day stress to guide. But, this is always backed up by using an HRV reading that is properly validated and that is through Oura. So even though I’m happy with BB and all day stress, I need is confirmation of my recovery and readiness that is accurate - this is where the Garmin falls a bit with its estimation of recovery based around a guesstimate of Vo2 max. Oura gives an whole night HRV, HR, Temp and goodness knows what- the ring has been validated to that of a Polar H7/H10. We might be going off tangent here, but I think it’s important to perhaps why you need this data. And for me, Whoop did not give any quality data that I could trust. Give Oura a look, along with HRV4Training and their blog. Very interesting articles there. Sorry if it pisses on the parade and dare say if you’re not taking fitness and health seriously then and only then it maybe ok. Especially, if like most influencers get them free - but 30 quid a month. Nah! Give Dcrrainmaker a read and Ray’s opinion on it. For me, the only actual people who like the whoop is the people are giving loyalty codes away

@@MarkLewisfitness I saw on another comment that you were concerned using a ring with weights. Oura will advise all day wear but a lot of people just use it at night to sleep in. So it won't be a problem to take it off here and there. Google fit, Strava or Apple fit will forward your activities into oura, so no real issues there. I don't tend to run in mine and the metrics are fine

Mark, in your last video you mentioned having two blood tests - could I ask did you get them through your GP (NHS) or do you have private health care or did you do it via the internet and one of the online companies that advertise it (if so which company and which test did you opt for?). I’m looking to do one myself. Many thanks in advance. Love your content, keep on being you! 💪😁👍

In the UK are use Medi checks. You pay for the test kit and they post it to you. You then either take it along to your local NHS who will charge you a small fee to draw your blood or I think you can pay extra to Medi checks and they will arrange a nurse to visit you. I DO NOT ADVISE this, but I draw the blood myself and post it off to them.

Garmin needs a lot to compete with Whoop when it comes to Recovery Information ... And, Whoop needs even MORE to compete with the Oura Ring... the Oura Ring is much cheaper and data is transferable. Whoop is a closed data system and a lease payment business model... plus, you are replacing a Garmin wrist strap with another strap... that's not much a change or improvement.

I don’t know if anyone has already said this… however you’re wearing the whoop the wrong way round…. 90% sure the bigger side goes on the forearm…. And the best way to track stuff always start an activity with your phone (I know not the best but works better)

Seems like such an obvious thing to add. Surely Garmin wants you to have _all_ of their devices so having them all communicate effectively seems pretty vital. I've only just got a Fenix Pro so I'm not much help. I upgraded from an Apple watch and everything is so much better for sport. I don't even miss the advantages that the Apple had. Not that you considered it, but the Apple watch wouldn't be the answer.

Not so sure - I have one coming but really all it's adding of use is the better HRM. Water proof battery is nice but only an idiot would shower with the old one on! And the haptic wake up is of no value to me. After playing around with the strap I'm getting ok results with the 3.0 so easy enough to see where 4.0 would be better still. Really what would have been nice would have been the ability to edit rubbish data and the ability to link to a chest strap.

Yeah, this is one of the stupid things that Garmin devices do not sync, same as Training Load that is calculated different on any device and you get total different numbers from two devices in the app. Garmin devices are great but have soo many UX problems.

Garmin has always sucked at cross-device or acting like a real platform, despite things like Physio True Up. It appears to just be in the company DNA to be too device focused whereas as you said in the video, a real human being is one entity and wants a merged comprehensive view of what has been happening to them, and for the platform to merge data from multiple devices to generate that if required.

So even if Garmin came up with a new upper arm based heart rate monitor that could feed data to a body battery algorithm, I fear they'd just leave it isolated again. But in any case, the product suggestion you made has real merit if someone at Garmin were to listen, because upper arm based heart rate monitors by all accounts are more accurate anyway, like the Plar OH1+

The hardware is shit in the whoop. The hr monitoring is terrible. I’m keeping my beady eye on the 3.0 strap to see if that’s worth it. The garmin hardware is meh…. But better than whoop. The venu 2 hr tracker is very very good and that will be on the new fenix 7, whenever it’s released. Truth is that although it looks like a toy and it’s duration won’t last anything more than a marathon, the Apple Watch has the best hardware on anything I’ve ever tried. Pin point accuracy and no need for a heart strap (check out des fit and Dc Rainmaker reviews). Really excited for the fenix 7. For now the forerunner 955 LTE (not available in the Uk yet) is the best garmin watch as it has the venu 2 sensor.
