Garmin Edge 1030 Plus Review | Enormous, Expensive and Excellent

Спорт

This video contains paid product placement for Freewheel. The Garmin Edge 1030 Plus is the newest top-end GPS cycle computer from the biggest name in the business, replacing the original Edge 1030 as its flagship computer. There are also a number of notable improvements compared to the original 1030, but it’s more of an evolution than a revolution.
The Garmin Edge 1030 Plus an almost overwhelmingly feature-rich device that can provide you with more training, performance and navigation metrics than you’ll ever really know what to do with. It is also fearsomely expensive, coming in at £519.99 / $599.99.
However, for that price, you get the largest screen and greatest functionality of any computer on the market.
In this super nerdy in-depth review, BikeRadar’s assistant editor, Jack Luke, runs through everything you need to know about the Garmin Edge 1030 Plus.
Would you ever buy a computer this expensive? Or do you use your smartphone to track rides? As ever, let us know in the comments!

I upgraded from the 830 to the 1030 plus just for the screen. I love the size. However, man, this thing is buggy. I’m on my second unit as the first one was replaced by garmin (good support experience) for repeatedly freezing my location on the map during navigation when I pass under a specific tunnel. Unfortunately, My second unit still freezes occasionally in the one spot. Secondly, IT DOES NOT DO STRAVA LIVE SEGMENTS RELIABLY,

Isn't Micro USB the euro standard on phones because of a law European Commission passed? That is probably why Europe has been slow to adapt Type C... however I think lawmakers want Type C on everything going forward, so that may change.

Jack what happened to the 1030 as shown at 3:08? ... I'm going to keep yelling from the mountain tops and this illustrates it perfectly, Garmin needs to fix their screen durability issues, the glass that is used on all of the 30 series edge units doesn't survive even the smallest crash. I love my 830, navigation is normally great (only wish there was an option to reverse a route), metrics galore, and battery life is epic; but on my 3rd unit!

I have had the Garmin 820 Edge for a few years now and was pretty happy with it but the battery life seems to be dwindling. I’ve also had an issue with it automatically syncing to my iPhone with Garmin Connect after I did a software update a while back. I have to turn the computer off and back on when I get for the ride to upload through my WiFi. My question is, should I upgrade to the 1030 plus or 830 plus? Is it worth the investment or should I wait until my 820 edge battery is just completely worn out and then upgrade?

What is the maximum data windows that can be displayed at the same time when one is viewing the map screen? I know that on the Garmin 830 it's two. Others have indicated to me that it doesn't matter because it's easy to scroll between the pure data pages and the map but, still, I'd like to know if the 1030 has more data that can be viewed with the map screen than does the 830.

My Wish List.. i would like Garmin to make an EDGE the size of the 1030 plus, but only have the navigation feature of the simpler Edge Explore 2... I don't need training stuff, i'm very low vision, and need turn by turn directions that i can see and that is really simple to put in an address and say "GO"... I can't see the explore because it's too small.. I can see the 1030 plus, but who (other than a pro cyclist) needs all that clutter that make is too complicated to operate.. The best would be if you could put the Garmin cycling maps on the Garmin motorcycle size screen... But they are not interchangeable maps.. LOL Someone with influence needs to talk to the design team at Garmin and ask for the "handicap accessible" version of the 1030..LOL Thanks.

I love all the people running out to gripe about "no USB-C" and how they will boycott Garmin until they move over to USB-C. LOL. Relax folks. It's a charging cable. The total number of times you need to run data over it is almost zero. So if you really want to stick with your old computer because of the shape of the charging cable, don't let me stop you. Meanwhile, I'll be biking double centuries on the 1030+ without a spare battery pack... enjoying the 24-hour battery life. Cuz I don't care what shape the charging cable plug is.

I’d never go back to Garmin, shocking battery life actual vs claimed, constant crashing and clunky UX uploading maps and non-existent customer support. I met with someone who used to work for Garmin on a ride the other day who echoed all these points. Went Wahoo after three duff Garmins and never looked back. Ride with gps have been syncing with Wahoo for years. This looks like a better product but the price is absurd

I owned the Edge 1000 so I can't really comment on this new one but...the 1000 hailed and loved in every review was an absolute heap of atrocious garbage. The maps were a joke, the touchscreen was as responsive as an old deaf dog and the syncing worked randomly so I'll be definitely considering the wahoo.

Interesting. I'm sitting here with syncing issues with my Wahoo companion app (oddly enough, the device, Elemnt Roam, has the routes while the app doesn't), and despite having a Wahoo speed sensor paired with the head unit I'm still getting really stupid numbers for maximum speed on occasion. (Just today it said I did over 126 mph... I wish.) So, I am considering switching to a Garmin 1030 Plus.

The higher capacity 32 GB (to 16 GB of the original 1030) doesn't compensate for the missing microSD card slot on the 1030 plus. That's a very bad decision by Garmin to the "improved" 1030 plus. On the original 1030 you could even add microSD cards with 32 GB (without any firmware on it for maps only - with formating FAT32 even larger microSD cards). When the processor is faster the microSD slot would have been even better. I really don't understand Garmin's decision because other devices (handheld outdoor GPS) still use this microSD card slot! 🤔

The entire point of structured workouts is to limit your rest and ride the full interval. If you're doing your 'structured' workout in an area where lights and other obstructions wreck the 'structure' it's not really having the same effect and you can still manually pause anyway.

@@savonaaaron Again, you don't understand the meaning of structured training then. I've lived in Los Angeles, Boston and San Francisco... all 'densely populated areas' and it really only takes a 30 min warmup (or less drive) to find a place where you can do your intervals. Especially now, nearly all commercial areas are empty. Copping out to "not a professional athlete" assumes most people are? ... Just press stop since you can't be bothered to find an area where you're not interrupted by traffic. Notice you have no likes? Because it defeats the purpose of structured training.

After my second Garmin Edge 520 died unexpectedly I decided to try something different - the Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt instead of the Garmin 530. Boy! I'm glad I did. kzread.infoUgkxXZCtB-wGdHVTBSz8RswePK5vllHNi06N The display on the Wahoo Bolt is much easier to read. I like the configuration of the display more (up to 7 items visible on page 1 without scrolling and the first item chosen is larger characters than the next 3 rows that have pairs of items (still very readable). I also like the configurable item selections. The Bolt synced with my Garmin ANT+ Speed sensors on both bikes easily so no additional investment was required there. While the rated battery life is a couple hours less than the Garmin 520/530, I easily get a weeks worth of 1+ hour rides before recharging (and it's never really low on charge). At the end of a ride syncing to the Wahoo app, Strava, and Apple Health app is painless.

I can never understand why they don't include the buttons that the 530 has *in addition to* the touch screen. Like, it's their flagship device, far and away the most expensive one most people would be willing to buy, and where I live, there are significant chunks of the year when you can't use it normally/conveniently. I guess adding buttons is like admitting that the touch screen on its own doesn't cover every need and thus is not as premium a feature as it appears to be on the surface. But the fact that smartphones are purely touch-operated and that one can't use them with big gloves or in the rain/snow is one of the major arguments for switching to a dedicated computer (I also just hate trying to use a touch screen on my handlebars while I'm moving, particularly if it's bumpy, but that's a personal thing). All in all then, it doesn't make sense to me to manufacture a computer that is essentially operated exactly like a smartphone (and more clunkily, at that). Now to be fair, buttons by themselves come with their own drawbacks too. I would love to see Garmin go the Karoo or Sigma route and make a device that is both touch- and button-operated. It seems like it would be so easy for them to implement and then most/all conceivable conditions of use would be covered. I could probably ignore all the other weird UI, software and hardware choices Garmin makes, and would buy the 830 or 1030 this very second if only they also had buttons.
