Right now, Garmin is giving a $200 discount on the 1030. I’m going to upgrade my 530plus and deciding weather to get the 1040 or 1030. I have the 530plus and think it’s the perfect size but was looking to add the touch screen features.

One factor you didn't mention that I found important and didn't learn until yesterday was, Garmin Dropped support for the Garmin Varia Vision with the 1040!!! Those of us who have used the VariaVision typically love it and feel almost naked without it. No mention of this is made in the manual that I could find and in fact, when I called Garmin tech support, the person I spoke with wasn't aware of that either. I am not a programmer but it seems to me, that adding ( or not removing) whatever was necessary to preserve the function of the VariaVision unit, would have not been that big a problem and would have kept those of us with that device, happy. Now that I know that, I am planning on returning my 1040. One other observation but its just conjecture is, the aluminum mount would appear to be more prone to damage from dropping and becoming dented, than the plastic.

It’s a bummer. I believe the Varia vision uses the legacy Bluetooth connection which is no longer supported on newer generation of Garmin devices.

@Thegizmogarage Great video, one little mistake.. Galileo is not the Russian satellite system. Instead, it was funded by the European Union in 2016 and has its headquarters in Prague and two ground operation centers in Italy and Germany.

I currently have a Edge 800, but my old eyes starts to wear and I think the screen is kind of hard to read nowdays. Maybe the backlight is worn also cause the display is very dim, so I've been looking into the Edge 530 which I could get for $150 with a rabate i have, but I am afraid that I would miss the touchscreen, so I have been looking into getting the Edge 830 instead, but noticed the 1030+ is the same price ($399). I think I will get the Edge 1030+ after seeing this video. Thank you for your review.

Edge 1030 plus provides larger screen and is just a tad dimmer than the 1040.

I always used the Supershielz tempered glass protector, the one on my old 1030 plus fits the 1040 perfectly. After all, they have the exact same screen size and resolution. amzn.to/3ohxOKF

Nice comparrison. However the plastic mount is prone to wear and braking. Out of five of us two have had wear and broken tab problems. Yes a metal mount might wear bike mount more but they are cheap to replace by comparison.

Hi, great video. I do not agree with your conclusion about the plastic vs aluminium mount. On my Edge 1030 the plastic mount on the edge actually broke off (partly). This was a problem, because it is part of the unit. Now I had to buy a setup mount and glue it on the unit to repair it. Maybe you're right that an alu mount wears out the other (plastic) side of the mount (on the bike) quicker, but I'd rather have a defect bike part (which is cheaper to replace) than a defect Garmin device. Also: the mount on the bike is also available in aluminium, which is much stronger.

Both will be accurate. Unless you are near a lot of foliage and high-rises, in that case, a multi-band GPS might be slightly more accurate.

Are the maps better looking. I genuinely hate the maps on the 1030… and all the arrows all over the screen, make it so difficult when off road. That alone would be a reason to upgrade…

One question to the Edge 1040 Nonsolar owners: Is the case actually white on the sides or silver? On the Garmin web sites it looks silver, but in this and other videos it looks white. Can someone say something about this?

Metal on plastic. Good. Put the metal on the most expensive and hardest to replace part. Leave the plastic on the cheapest easy to replace part. That’s a plus, not a minus.

There is only one logical reason as to why greedy Garmin would choose to make the quarter turn strut in aluminium; to get their standalone out-front mounts sold more often.

Doesn't the standard GPS allow GeoTracking of you...? if you are trying to disappear, you will want the solar because it is much more difficult to track you.. Solar has more privacy on location of rider.. SocialCreditScore ESG ie: the tracking of every person on earth.. You may have a need to completely disappear off the grid without giving up your navigation capability.. OR you could simply pull out the outdated street maps you have folded in the glove box.

No, gps technology is a one-way communication using GPS sent signals to calculate your location, this doesn't allow 2-way communication with the satellite. On the other hand, new iPhone SOS allows 2-way satelite communication when you call for help, other SOS beacons also supports 2-way communication.

@@TheGizmoGarage the towers you see every couple miles on the roads across America are a PingSystem.. it triangulates your location with 3 towers that send a signal to you and back to the tower.. The GPS (especially a small sensor like Garmin) does not have the capability to send a signal to the tower.. The GPS determines the time it takes to get 3 towers signals, then it calculates the geo-location. There is a reason it is dangerous to stand too close to a tower. If the GPS was sending out a large enough signal to reach the tower, you would get sick from the radiation.. It takes 3 towers to triangulate and calculate 3 signals to determine your location based on the time it takes to receive the signal from the tower.. I learned this years ago. I'm sure this info is still available on how a gps interacts with 3 towers to determine your location.. PEACE.

@@TheGizmoGarage That is how they geo-tracked those at jan6 and other events. GPS units do not have that kind of powerful signal. They only receive into from 3 towers and triangulate your location based on time.
