Garmin dash cam and polarized filter test. Model 57 vs Mini 2

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I wanted to test how polarized filter will effect to the reflections in the window. Will the filter add more noise, is it going to effect much to the video quality. At the same time I can see the difference between 1440p and 1080p resolutions. Is there a big difference.
This is not a very scientific test, just a test in real life situations.
I'm surprised, how well Mini 2 model will do in a good day light conditions, Model 57 is better in a low light situations. There is also a big difference, what comes to audio quality. I didn't notice much difference in noise, between filter or no filter.
I didn't do any post processing to the footage, no color corrections or anything like that. GPS information I moved to the middle of the screen, originally it is in the lower left corner.

I have the same models as you and agree on all points. I wish Garmin would come out with a 4k version. Good job on the comparison thank you.

Thanks for a infomative test. I have consider to either buy the Mini 2 nor the 57. Seen videos about the polarized filter. On both of them. Here in Norway the Mini 2 costs about NOK 1595 and the 57 costs NOK 2095. And filter costs ca NOK 300. Since there the 57 does not costs so much than the Mini 2, I'll go for the 57. With filter. :-) Have a great day!

Thank-you for this very practical demonstration and on the road tests. I am about to install a Mini 2. I plan to view sample footage and decide if I need a filter. Having bought the camera for 101€ the filter would be 25% of the cost which is excessive. I may explore option of taking the camera to a camera store to see if I can buy a non-Garmin one to fit. I think the ability of the camera to record a collision and prove the other vehicle crossed a junction when I had right of way isn’t going to be affected by some glare, which is my very basic reason for the purchase. Thanks again and drive safe!

hi Kaukola, thanks for the comparison video. well done. This is what I was looking for. Big help! Can i ask, what's your experience with the 57 on 1440p 30 fps? From what distance and how clearly can read the registration plates from the cars while you are moving in day and night? Based on your experience, is it better to read the plates with the polarized filters on? Thank you for your answer in advance.

I looked through some of my old recordings. In a good, sunny weather, licence plate is pretty good visible till about 5-7meters, if the car in front of you is driving about the same speed. Result in the dark is about the same, because of the headlights. I also had a clip, when i drove about 45km/h (28mph), and cars coming towards me about the same speed. In good weather, if distance is more than about three meters, i couldn't find out the licence plate anymore. In the dark, no way to get any results, if cars are driving towards you, too much noise. With filter, i didn't see much difference, but also i don't have much footage yet with 57 model in the dark.

Thanks for the video. Does the polarizer effect the footage at night?

I just compared some old footage (model 57) at night without filter to a footage with filter. I tought, that there would be a big difference, what comes to noise in the dark. But i can't see much of a difference, if any. Both are equally bad, lots of noise, no chance to get any details of moving objects. If vehicle is in front of you driving the same speed, there is a small chance to get licence plate info, because your car's lights makes everything more bright. But in many case, camera will over exposure the licence plate, and you can't see any details in licence plate.

I think the filter makes the video look too dark and too yellow looking. I'm not even sure if the filter helps diminish glare.

I think also, that the benefit is quite small.

I can’t decide on which one to get. I wish I could get the 57 spec’s in the mini size. I like how small the mini is.

If you need GPS data and if you want to use videos for example in social media, i think 57 is a better choice. Both of course works ok as a dashcams, 57 is little bit better with details and low light situations.

Thank you! Do you ever worry about someone breaking in to steal it?

@@randothecomando i actually never thought about that.. but i think that's possible.. i don't know, if dashcam is really something that someone wants to steal. In my case you can't get the cable out easily without breaking it. Camera it self is quite easy to remove and put back, because of the magnet and only one cable, but i'm not going to do it everytime, no way.

I have fwo of the Garmin Mini v1. They are great, but the Garmin App is useless. I take the card out and put directly in the computer to obtain the pictures. The App is slow incredibly slow, unusable.

Yes, for me it's also easier and much faster to take the card out, and put it to computer's card reader.
