If your garage door freezes on the way up or if it stops and reverses directions on the way down, you may need to increase the force adjustments on your garage door opener. This video from Sears PartsDirect shows how to check the garage door for smooth travel, adjust force settings and test the new settings to make sure the door closes safely.
Visit us at: www.searspartsdirect.com/diy/...
1. Rule out safety sensor problem
Inadequate up force can cause the door to stop on its way up. If you set the downforce too low, the door will stop on its way down, then reverse and open back up.
If the opener lights are blinking, it’s probably a safety sensor problem. Here's a link to a video that covers troubleshooting problems with the safety sensors.
www.searspartsdirect.com/diy/...
2. Check trolley travel on rails
Check the door for smooth travel. Pull the emergency release rope to disconnect the trolley from the door. Manually lower and raise the door to make sure it goes up and down easily. If the door stops or gets stuck on the tracks, check to see if the tracks are bent or damaged. Fix any problems you find or have a Sears technician complete the repairs.
If the door opens and closes easily, reconnect the door to the trolley and increase the downforce by turning the adjustment screw clockwise. Turn the screw a quarter-turn at a time and retest after each adjustment until the door closes completely.
3. Set downward force
Once the door is closing all the way, make sure that the downforce is not set too high. Excessive downforce can damage anything caught in the path of door. Close the door with the opener and grab the base of the door when the door is halfway down. If you can stop the door using your hands, then no further adjustment is necessary. If you can’t stop the door, reduce the downforce in small increments. Make adjustments until the door closes completely on its own but will still stop if you catch it halfway down.
4. Set upward force
If the door stops without opening completely, you may need to increase the up force on the garage door opener. You can increase the up force by turning the adjustment screw clockwise. Turn the screw a quarter-turn at a time and retest after each adjustment until the door opens completely.
Just like with downforce, test the up force setting for safety. Stop the door with your hand when it’s halfway up to make sure that up force isn't excessive. Continue making small adjustments until the door opens completely on its own and you can stop the door by hand halfway up its travel.
If you don't see force adjustment screws on the motor unit, then your garage door opener may adjust force automatically. Check your owner's manual for more information.

Thank you so much for this video. For the 9 years that I've had my house, the garage doors would not stop and reverse if they hit something, or if I manually applied resistance, like the man in this video does. I figured I would at some point have to call for a repair. After seeing this video, I realized the down force was the problem. I adjusted the setting and now the doors work as they should. It fees great to be able to fix it myself.

Hi Wayne, My garage slowly started not opening all the way and eventually when it went down it would open back up. I adjusted the Travel Limits for the UP and Down. It worked for about 10-15 open/closes then the same problem came back. I ordered a new RACK, (the piece that actually pulls the trolley). I haven't received part yet but now the trolley/Rack is running the entire distance of the track and when it reaches the end it makes this horrible grinding noise and won't stop until I pull the power. I think because I was constantcly adjusting the Open/Close Limits it got messed up. How do I reset the Open/Close Limits? Right now it is grinding at the end of the rail at the door. I hope I explained it well. thanks in advance!

Page 37 of the owner’s manual shows a diagram of the limit switch assembly on a typical Craftsman garage door opener: www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/user-manuals/13953225srt1-craftsman-parts-garage+door+opener-manual. We recommend that you unplug the garage door opener (or shut off the house circuit breaker to disconnect power) and open the motor unit. Check the wiring connections on that limit switch assembly and look for physical damage. Reconnect any loose wires and replace the limit switch assembly if you find damage. If you find no problems with the limit switch assembly, then the logic board may not be detecting limit switch signals correctly. You may need to replace the logic board. Some models have a different type of limit detection, so let us know if you have a different type of opener.

We've had our Sears garage door opener for many years and it worked flawlessly until a few days ago. The door would not open so we manually removed the door from the opener via the cord so that the Wifee could get out of the garage. Now, when we press the button to send the glider towards the rope to reconnect the door, the opener goes in reverse instead as if it's lifting the door. Anyone ever experience this and have any thoughts on what could be the problem?

I can then open it no problem with the opener. But... if I let it close to the ground it will not open. I increased the up force and went to max. It won’t open though. Please help. Mine clicks once as soon as I hit open and doesn't even attempt to move up. Any chance the torque settings could be the issue? The two sensors by the tracks, one has a green light and the other has a yellow light, is that normal? If I move the sensor around or clean dust off them I hear the unit click a few times while I'm doing that.

There's a chance that you may need adjust the up-force setting on your garage door opener but other factors such as travel problems or a faulty logic board could be keeping the garage door opener from lifting the door. We recommend that you follow the steps in this troubleshooting video/article to diagnose the problem you're describing: www.searspartsdirect.com/article/garage-door-wont-move-motor-and-travel-troubleshooting-video.html . Your details seem to indicate that the safety sensors are working properly. The safety sensors will prevent the door from closing but typically won't prevent the door from opening. Pull the emergency release rope to disconnect the trolley from the door. Manually raise the door to make sure it goes up easily. If the ice build-up under the garage door causes the door to stick shut during winter, spread de-icer along the bottom of the door to help keep ice melted so the garage door doesn't freeze shut. If the door opens easily, check the remotes for RF interference as shown at 47 seconds into this video: www.searspartsdirect.com/article/garage-door-opener-remotes-wont-work-video.html . If RF interference is preventing the remotes from working, you'll likely need to install the antenna extension kit ( www.searspartsdirect.com/part-number/41A3504/0009/139.html ) to fix the problem. We hope that these tips help. If you need further assistance, let us know the results of the troubleshooting we recommended and give us the model number of your garage door opener.

  • @searspartsdirect

    @searspartsdirect

Because the opener lifts the door when you use the wall button, adjusting up force won't likely solve this problem because the opener works properly when activated. If you haven't checked to see whether the remotes work when triggered within a few feet of the motor unit, we recommend that you check that issue. You can remove the wireless keypad from its location outside the garage to perform that check on the keypad. If the remote devices work while held a few feet from the motor unit, then RF interference is likely causing the problem that you're describing. If the remotes don't work when held a few feet from the motor unit, then cold weather is affecting the remote devices and/or the logic board inside the garage door opener motor unit. Keep the remote devices indoors so they warm up and then see if they work properly. If they do, then you'll likely need to replace the remote devices to fix this problem. If the remote devices don't work when they're warmed up to room temperature, then you'll likely need to replace the logic board to fix this problem. We hope this additional advice helps. If you need more assistance, let us know.@@problem417

Look for an error code flashing on the up and down arrows on the motor unit and refer to your owner's manual to troubleshoot problems indicated by an error code. Check to see if the garage door opener lights blink when the door reverses. If so, then the bottom of the door (or debris clinging to the bottom of the door) may be hitting the safety sensor beam and causing the door to reverse. Clean any debris off the bottom of the garage door and adjust the position of the safety sensors if necessary to correct this problem. If the lights don't blink, pull the emergency release and manually check the garage door travel along the rails. If the garage door binds up about a foot from the ground during down travel, then repair or adjust the garage door rails to fix the travel problem. If the door closes smoothly when you manually close it, try adjusting the down force as shown in the video.

Check to see if the emergency release rope is pulled, causing the inner trolley to move along the rail without the outer portion of the trolley that’s connected to the door. If the emergency release rope if pulled, reset the emergency release to connect the inner trolley to the outer portion of the trolley. The garage door may move once you reset the emergency release. If the emergency release rope wasn’t pulled, check to see if the garage door is locked. Unlock the garage door and it should open. If the door isn’t locked, check garage door travel by pulling the emergency release rope to disconnect the garage door from the trolley. Lift and lower the door fully to check up and down travel. If the garage door binds up on its rails as you move the door, adjust or repair the rails so the door travels smoothly. If the garage door travels smoothly along its rails, then check garage door opener trolley travel along the rail as shown at 1:54 in this video: www.searspartsdirect.com/article/garage-door-wont-move-motor-and-travel-troubleshooting-video.html. Repair or replace the rail or trolley if necessary. If the inner trolley doesn’t move when it’s disconnected from the outer portion of the trolley and you find no damage to the rail or inner trolley, then a failed logic board, bad drive motor or a mechanical failure in the drive system can prevent the inner trolley from moving. We’ll need to know the model number of your garage door opener to help you troubleshoot these types of failures.
