Fun fact: He's still wearing the burnt remnants of his old outfit from the Captain Gangplank skin. The front's been burned off almost entirely, with the shoulders being basically rags at this point. Yet he still wears it, and I think it's a neat touch.

Gangplank was considered dead for a short period of time, but the item description literally reads: "'There's only one way you'll get this armor from me...' - forgotten namesake" The forgotten namesake is not Gangplank, because he hasn't been forgotten, meaning it must be referring to somebody else, ergo, the former owner who he took it from.

That would be fucking carnage and so much in character. MF tries to save Bilgewater from the ruined king while GP doesn't give a fuck and takes everything there. MF comes back to an old Bilgwater controled by GP and there's straight up a fucking war again. I love it

In Illaoi's color story, she implies that Gangplank's father was extremely abusive, which, when combined with the fact that a Gangplank is something that you literally step all over, really paints an image of what his life was like growing up.

It’s been a few years so I might be remembering this wrong but I remember in the Brazilian server when he died they just replaced his base skin with the ghost skin

a part I like about gankplank is that he doesn't have the (at least nowadays) stereotypical sixpack. He definitely looks strong and he has muscles but also a noticeable belly. And I like that.

I do agree with that. Jhin, for example, is not all that original when you look at the amount of "psychopathic artist murderers" in media, but all those elements are utilised so well with him that it really isn't a problem and actually works to his advantage.

he got disabled because of insane bugs, i think it was something about his barrels. it was just spectacularly good timing in relation to the event.

finally my main. i was waiting for this nobody has the guts to say it but he's hot, regardless of skin. doesnt even need a 6 pack like all the new male champs either. he's just that good

there is an easter egg with Aether wing Kayle and Dreadnova GP. forgot the line but it was about ending the war.

I feel like his robo arm is a cool twist on the usual hook for hand pirates usually have (also would have been something to give him a peg leg)

man.. i wish more of the girls could be like gangplank, just having a different, kinda chubby, kinda old body that just goes unremarked also, i at least heard that the short period where he was disabled was because of a game breaking bug, but the coincidence fit so well with the narrative that no one really noticed it wasnt intentional

Depends on the context I guess, a high action world like Runeterra would make you lose fat which leads to the prevalence of fit characters, much more for Champions, exceptions are Gangplank who's a middle aged, rumdrinking Pirate Lord, and Gragas who weaponizes his fat or Urgot...but he's..something. Maybe a grandmotherly type of champ, perhaps a support? Or like Mei from overwatch? Plump and plucky, possibly a mage.

@@taliyahofthenasaaj7570 It was actually because of a bug with his barrels I believe. I don't remember what it was exactly since it was 5 and a half years ago, but it was hilariously broken, so they shrugged and went "I guess he died" and disabled him.

@@flvvrs4197 But that's the point of fantasy, to be fantastic. You may not be able to do magic or be divinely hot irl, but you could be if you play this or that character. You can make a character fat, old, even ugly but it still has to stand out, never unremarkable or plain unless that's their whole theme or something like some sort of assassin-spy. But that's just my opinion.

I think it’s additionally very refreshing that being a pirate isn’t treated like a joke with him. He’s cruel, rude, intimidating, and absolutely ruthless. Much better than the protagonist pirate trope imo

I quite like GP, I like the fact that hes one of very few if maybe not the only champion in league with that particular bodytype. Good work riot.

One cool fact is that all the narrative of this event gave everyone that owned Gangplank a free skin. He received the rework and his main look was the skin Captain Gangplank, that was the base model. Than Miss Fortune achieved her goal to blow up his ship, and he "died" becoming disabled for some time, and then he returned, with the prosthetic arm and ragged look, and everyone that liked his original look could still appreciate it in the form of the free skin! The only other recent rework that gave a skin for free was the Volibear one! Because a long time ago, champions that got reworked used to get the "traditional" skinline

And even if he is very thirstable like almost all characters are, for league standards his body type is more unique than most which is nice I think.

In one story with Illaoi, she makes the Buhru Islands back him up so that he could defend Bilgewater against the Harrowing. It was interesting to see him become more than just evil piraty pirate. Although that story never really went anywhere

He also team up with MF to fend off the Black Mist in one event but that's more about necessity than anything else. Can't really rule over anyone if they (including him as well) are all dead so gotta protect his domain even if it means doing what he wouldn't do normally. Other than that he's mostly evil and ruthless.

I like the idea of him wearing Dead Man's Plate, because it is a fully usable item for him.

I still can't get over how ballsy it was to go "We reworked Gangplank. Also he's dead now so you can't play him. Get shreked."

I give him a SSS for the kickass bilgewater theme and butcher's bridge that came with him.

Honestly I wished that his Captain skin he was initially 'redesigned' with was his base skin personally because I liked it so much better, but I get the point of the storyline.

Well, I'm totally biased by Gangplank since I main it, it's an eternally fun champ to play and very diverse gameplay wise. His design is cool, being less of a beefy action man and more of a strong robust man, which reminds me of Ghengis Khan for some reason. And though I love his lore portraying him first as a ruthless pirate overlord and then a beaten up dead man, I seriously think that either Riot should give him some humanity or excuse why he is beyond any salvation. His "trial by fire" at the hands of MF isn't framed as a rebirth to find redemption, though it could be and it would be very cool. Being at the bottom of the hole-like stories are pretty interesting sometimes. But, sometimes can be cliché in their own right, so he can always be used to frame a man who "went so far he can't stop now" and serve as an example of exactly what he is, a brutal bloodthirsty pirate, even maybe working as a plot point for Illaoi of Riot ever decides to deepen up their relationship. Such a cool character.

Greetings! Preiss algorithm gods! Oranges!

Eh, I preferred his old design before the remake. Gameplay wise it was a big improvement, but I liked old Gangplanks story where he was a young up incomer who literally learned to sleep with his eyes open thanks to his abusive father who he later killed. His design was also somewhat different from the usual pirate mold, being younger but still with a full if smaller beard and the sleeves torn off his coat. The entire Bilgewater event I was waiting for new GP to be revealed to be the father of old GP and for old GP to kill him and take his place and coat, but that didn't happen unfortunately. On the bright side they also repaired Graves and TF's relationship in that event which I was against until Riot turned them into a comedy duo with the Legends of Runeterra skit. Then I loved it.

There's an argument to be made about canon (and actually any kind of) skins being part of the design of a champion, so maybe it should be briefly mentioned at least in some of the next shorts how their theme translates to their skins, or at least use it as another category for your ranking.

Captain Gangplank is when he was still the pirate lord of Bilgewater, before Miss Fortune overthrew him. Base Gangplank is who he is in the lore right NOW. It's the reverse of Miss Fortune, where her base skin is who she used to be before overthrowing Gangplank, and Captain Miss Fortune is her as a pirate lord of Bilgewater in the lore right NOW.

Pirate fashion is perpetually stuck in the 1700s, and typically in European/American fashions of the time. Changing the time period a little, or drawing from different cultures, that alone makes a difference - Bilgewater already does this, incorporating aesthetics Riot has drawn from pacific island cultures and middle- and south American cultures. GP has a little bit of it in his tattoos.

By that logic you could have a pirate that wears where they came from, or one that has tattoos or clothes from various different places to show where they’ve been and what they’ve possibly done.
