Tbh, karma doesn’t scream “Generic Hot Babe” to me. She has a lot of unique qualities that separate her from the other female champs. I mostly play champions that are unique such as fiddle and kindred. I think despite the beauty standard in league, karma is quite different from the rest concept wise. She should have a higher grade imo

@@jakubbarczyk4310 well before the release of senna there was a severe lack of diversity in the female roster, karma was, for a very long time, the darkest skinned woman in the game, her outfit isnt particularly revealing and she is not painted as a sexual character to any degree, i disagree with TB in this video just because the woman has a pretty face and doesnt have a particularly unique body shape doesnt necessarily make her a "babe" or somthing designed to be sexy, yes she is showing a bit of leg but its not overtly sexual in nature, i get where hes coming from but i think this was quite a harsh ranking

yeah i feel the same way, yes she have the same generic body type but for me she's far more interesting that a lot of generic hot babes, i really like the culturs her overall vibe and outfit are inspired by. + its one of the only dark skin tone lady of the game. so yeah she's not perfect, the exposed leg for exemple is maybe too much (even if the dragon tatoo is cool) but she's far more unique than a caitlyn or a zyra

I would have given her a B, her dragon sets her out from the rest of the women in LoL. Her design does tell that she is some sort of spiritual mage/ spiritual protector type character Yes she is conveniently attractive but I would say that is a more neutral part of her design.

In the comments, we viewers also have the option to share our own opinions since it is, of course, going to differ. Trying to shut down commenters before or as they share their comment is the thing that should be avoided, one of the reasons is that it is an action driven by malice. It is not for you to care about what people say to one another in a random video of a random channel, you may even not care, but if so, why do you do it? You're not even commenting, what is inside your head the moment before you do this is the image of dumb people being mean to one another, therefore, you preemptively try to end the conflict before it begins by being mean to that person; that kind of action strays from reality, does not lead to a pacific interaction and is not constructive. Don't worry about the things you read or people you see in internet, most is gosip level, in the sense that those things have no business ruining your day or life over seeing them. I personally don't agree with giving her such a low grade - I would put her in the B tier, she's not amazing, but not bad either. I also don't see her as the "hot generic league babe", although she is really pretty. Her colors are pleasant, the purple and jade green compliment eachother nicely, her short hair is a nice break from all the long haired female characters and she's Indian coded, so that's a plus in a very white female character rooster.

Ryze is black because of his tribal skin! hes just blue because of magic! league has come a long way since then and its one of the best things about the new designers coming into the company, now we have Illaoi, Senna, Lucian, Rell, Ekko The entire continent of Shurima

@@meechiejamerson i hadnt read the other comments before i posted mine, but i guess if so many people are saying it TB might be in the wrong here, i dont even plah karma but i think this was a really unfair comaprison he did making her equivalent to nidalee, and relooking at his old videos hes very quick to comment on the anatomical features of female characters and with the male characters he takes everything into account

It’s disappointing how we pretty much only see Ionia in the context of Noxus. Kinda like how African history is only taught in America in the context of colonialism

Somehow, her game model actually looks better than her art. Could do with tweaks still, though.

Due to not being white Karma gets bonus points from me for her design. Still I'll always be nostalgic for old Karma's robe outfit.

I love how disappointing everyone are in the comments about Karma's grade. lol Even tho she has generic body type but IMO her overall design (her costume, her pose, her skin color, her short hair)is too unique to be called 'generic hot babe'. Like she is pretty much different from League's generic hot babes like MF, Ahri, Janna. TBH I expect more of the good points from your video but this video is ...C-. Sorry.

Hot take i agree with Skyen's rating, they dont do anything really notable with her dragon tattoo thingy, which could be covering her whole body, but instead only covers her leg as an excuse to show more thigh

Tbf, I think having a modern style cloth in any region on runeterra is not strange knowing we have piltover as a region. Also if Im not wrong, in the lore Ionia have the softest silk like what sett pants made of.

During this time my country is being occupied by the dutch and still most of the people during this time still wore an old traditional and only the noble and the rich wore the more modern style cloth.

Well, choices I guess. Have you seen Karma's updated concept art and recently cinematics? And put her outfit and haircut on Nidalee and nobody would be able to tell the difference? Well put Jayce outfit and haircut on Garen and I can't tell the difference either.

Jayce and Garen have significantly different body shapes. Plus they have different faces, for whatever reason riot can draw different male faces but uses the same female face template for every female champ

Not even close. Despite the maybe slightly same jaw shape, and that's if you're reeeeaaaally stretching it, Garen's build is a lot bulkier than Jayce's and proportions are different. Garen's body is drawn like a soldier while Jayce is drawn like a hunk who knows he's a hunk. He stays in shape because he knows it's appealing, Garen's muscle comes from training. You can see this in their designs. Every female character in league has a the same body and near enough the same face. No matter what occupation or personality they are, they are designed and drawn with one thing in mind. Must be sexy.

Okay mate this is the only grade I really disagree with but w/e I'd say B-

Hard disagree with the C- grade. Something like a B/B- seems more fair. Yes she is attractive but that’s not the main thing about her. Her design is unique with her having short hair, being Indian coded, and her costume is also pretty unique with the floaty thing. And nothing about her costume is really highlighting her sexually except she has a leg sticking out and I mean... it’s a leg. This isn’t the 19th century. It’s fine.

For me its a solid B, cause her design pretty much screams Ionia (unlike irelia imo) so her design lorewise is pretty k

I think the ONLY way I would recognize Karma without the floaty bits is her Jade Dragon Tattoo on her leg, everything else I agree with My personal grade for that takes off the - because she at least has ONE notable thing that’s part of her physical body (skin color does not count as more champions of that tone can be added with time)

These are your opinion, so mine is kinda irrelevant, but I'm going to pointlessly disagree with you here. Even if she were just another 'hot babe' (which I'm not sure I entirely agree with, though I see where you're coming from), all of the other design choices make her stand out enough that I would put her more in the upper B range then the low C range.

I really prefer Old Karma. I loved the Yin Yang vibe she had with the dress and how focused she was on meditating and gaining an iron will

Its not that she is hot its that being a hot woman makes you a dime a dozen in league. Also a C- is not terrible. C means average so he is stating that she is slightly worse than average. Is that really such a harsh condemnation?

I'm impressed to see that nobody in the comments has made an effort to address the fact that Riot changed her skin tone when her VGU hit. Not that I have a problem with it, I was just expecting to see more conversation about it.

I personally don't agree with this, she doesn't looks like she's intented to be a "fantasy babe", the body shape is kinda generic I agree but it doesn't break anything in her character (contrary to some other champs) and she doesn't really seem sexualized.

This is one of the few character where I disagree with the grading. She is hot, but that alone should not be a critique. Her design does point towards her backstory. You can tell she is probably a spiritual person, who wields magic and is connected to nature. Its a very generic design, but solid enough to at least grant her a B.

Hey i get that cliche designs in media are "boring", but Karma is cool man I'm getting serious "hot woman bad!!!!" vibes from the series please don't reduce your critiques to that man...

Yeah, I agree. Just because she have the typical hot female figure, doesn't mean her concept is bad. She have that elegant halo giving her the Ionia vibe same as irelia. She would look very cool if Riot upgrade her visual. Karma is at least B- in my book. With this mindset I hope that he won't take a look into Sona. I love her concept.

Karma is a fun champion to play on less serious games. She can support by shields or damage and threaten roots. There is a lot more emphasis on sustained attrition in combat, which can be a downfall if not aligned with allies' type of combat.

Love your shorts on characters, just watched them all through and really excited for the new ones in the future (very curious what you'll say on Taliyah ❤️)

Personally disagree with all the people in the comments saying C- is too harsh. I don't like Karma's design at all and think she'd look so much better with a different body type and less "pretty girl" same face syndrome. The only thing good about her is her costume and darker skin tone.

This is the first one I don’t quite agree with at all. Sure she does have exposed skin, but she doesn’t scream fantasy babe. Her problem is that beside the wings and dragon, she doesn’t stand out. The rest of her outfit could bring more of the Ionian spirit to her character. I’d give her a B-.

I have a very specific bugbear with Karma as a design and character and that is the fact that she feels like an appropriation of Indian culture rather than a representation of it. Her passive is called Mantra and her name is Karma, both words taken from Hindi/Sanskrit and both words having roots in Hindu and Buddhist philosophy but her design is fashion aesthetic is generic orientalist bits and bobs, while her phenotypical features read more as African or African-American. Which is particularly egregious because it takes the aesthetics of one American minority and dresses another minority in them erasing both of their identities with no sign of cohesive appreciation for any of their cultures. As a person from Indian descent It was so frustrating to have Karma be the only potential south Asian representation in League till Akshan and Nilah came out

Oh yeah this is an actual hot take

I completely respect your opinion, and would like to share mine alike. (Gonna be *quite* long) As many other's have pointed it out, I don't fully agree, that "Design wise, Karma is... every other hot League of Legends lady, a completely generic fantasy babe character...". Don't get me wrong, I ackowledge, she does indeed have the usual sporty, slim, fit body type, but imo in Karma's case, it's not shown or exploited obviously enough, to call her that. It's rather just -there, a side effect of being a game character - quite an old one for that matter, as she was released back in 2011, and her splash art and model, which she still uses to this day, she received 2 years later, in 2013 - 9 years ago. I reckon there's more to the 'general hot babe' archetype, than just ideal shape. Take her outfit for example: Compared to the other female characters in the game, Darha has one of the most reserved fashions. Except for that left thigh/leg on the base splash art, she doesn't really have any exposed skin at all, including most of her skins as well. The most revealing one would be Sun Goddess (my favourite one, but not becuase of that), but it's done there, because it fits the aztec asthetic (funny word combo) perfectly. A fully covered/armored outfit just wouldn't work with that. She also has medium-sized breasts, that are almost always completely covered, and her bum is neither ever emphasised. I know the short hair and the dark skin have been mentioned by many already, but I think they are important elements of her appearance - especially in a game full of long-haired white girls. That's why I don't like her Tranquility Dragon skin, because she doesn't look like herself. Now *that* is a skin, where if she didn't have her floating... stuff on her back and was in a different pose, I literally wouldn't be able to tell which champ I'm looking at. Her short hair and dark skin are key parts of her design, details that makes her stand out from among the pretty ladies. Then there is personality, which could yet again highly influence how a character is percieved, and as a result can create sub-archetypes. If you look at lots of the female champs, you'll see, that most of them fit into either of these categories, because of the way they look, behave and interact: cute, innocent, young animegirl (Gwen, Lux, Zeri etc.) cool, confident, sassy, adventurous/reckless (Samira, Katarina, Akali) bitchy, seductive, typically poorly clothed succubus like (Evelynn, Ahri, Nidalee) evil, dark, cold, powerful (LeBlanc, Syndra, Shyvana) And there's obviously more, but you can see how they may all have the same body, they achieve their sexyness all differently. Karma, however, is not really any of the above. Her mature, honest, modest, open-minded, respectful, kind and inspiring personality makes her even less of the hot babe and more of the character she's supposed to be. I see what you meant, and I agree that after a time it gets really boring to look at the same physique over and over again, but as I have described it, it's not emphasised or used, but rather 'canceled out' by other details that make her stand out. If anything, she is the avatar of Ionia, who just happens to be attractive, but she is definitely not overly hot, not in the same way as the other girls. Overall, I think Karma's design is great. It doesn't have that extra drag to be S or A, but it's a solid B/B+ for me. Compared to the concept idea, she is fairly well-executed, her colour palette is pleasant, her outfit and her accessories are great, her skin, short hair, and the floating jade dragons make her unique and iconic, and I like the green tattoos too, that occasionally glow when she uses magic. (Edit: I had to write this down twice, because yt for some reason didn't save it for the first time...)

Feeling like this is just the minute put in for each design take short video, I don't see myself agreeing with the grade nor the take of her having generic hot women body. She feels more than that. Her design is catching as her role as a leader and the one who can talk with Ionia's spirt.

There is something I want to share about her design as an artist, it is a phrase that goes: "A hot design may not be a good design, but a good design can be so beautiful it makes you feel it's hot". I understand your point of Karma having a similar body type/shape to many other female characters, but I don't agree because we don't focus on that. We see the colors of her clothes, the dragon things on her back, the asymetry is also super cool because it goes with her deal of making a third path between two others, the way her tattoos also add to the champion and is not only because of aesthetics, they way they glow like in the avatar state, etc. We never see Karma as a hot babe, that has nothing to do with her character, not from the players' perspective, not from the game designers, not from the lore, she is just a normal girl that becomes the Avatar of Ionia. Before, I said that "we don't focus on that", and "we" are the designers, the players, the mains, the lore; Karma does not have the design or idea of "a hot babe", she is a normal woman, a common girl, but women are beautiful and that's where the misunderstanding comes from, because there is nothing in her design that wants you to think of her as a hot babe, The exposed shoulders? The leg with a long tattoo? Maybe some cleavage? Of course anyone could think women looks hot with those, because women are beautiful, and with those, they look even more attractive, but that doesn not transform them into "hot babes", it is such an inaccurate term. It's as I said earlier, Karma is not designed to be hot, rather, her design is beautiful and that makes you feel it's hot. Karma is my favorite champion, and I know she's not up there with the S class, I might give her -A if I stretch it a little bit but I'm confident of her being a solid B class, certainly way higher than -C. So Karma is between B and B+ for me.

It's just that the line of thought of "Good art/design -> Beautiful -> Attractive -> Hot -> Bad art/design" is not fair nor rational. As an example: an artist shares drawings through a platform, all the artwork have certain aesthetics characteristics; the pieces keep coming but loses the novelty with time. People may get used to the style and say it's worse or bad, but it does not change the fact that the art is as good, if not more, than when it appeared for the first time. There is also a serious problem regarding that line if thought I explained earlier, and it's that is only used with women. There are cases like Kai'sa where the design may not make sense and could have been more interesting if it gravitated towards Cool and non-feminine features; Karma's case is not like Kai'sa at all. Skyen's opinion show a bias where female design doesn't have to be pretty, beautiful or hot unless it has to. I believe he will be calm and happier in a game without any female characters, and he won't pay any mind, since that issue is a solid thing in his mind. This Karma opinion may be a clear proof of that, because he judged her as a hot babe like any other female character in league when there's nothing in her design that has the intention of saying that she is a hot babe.

Karma is pretty unique man and i think her twin dragons are cool. Imo she is not a c-, id put her somewhere around b or b+ tbh considering she's some pacifist turned fighter who can obliterate her enemies

I think the C- is deserved because I don’t see much in her costume that tells me she’s meant to be a pacifist spiritual leader. I think it would look cool if the dragons were a stronger motif in her entire costume instead of just above her head Like from the neck up I love her design! She’s got a great face and I like the headpiece-but it doesn’t really feel like it flows as well w the rest of her costume to me

Wish that theres more fluidity in her garments to really hone in on her spirituality and to pay homage to her being Indian coded and to inspire from all the flowy regal clothes found across asian royalty. I know shes been at war and fighting so a big, floofy, and less skin-showing or 'conservative' type of clothing would make a little less sense but, once again, i hate how riot prioritizes chooses sexy over conveying her elder shaman status.

Her design doesn’t scream fantasy babe to me personally and even her story sets her so far away from that stereotype so I’m not sure I can agree on this one to be honest…. If we take into consideration some of her other skins then maybe you could put her under that category but I’m not really seeing

Karma is the generic "Cleric" archetype of League with a few unique aspects (notably her wings and dragon circle) to make her stand out. But if you removed those aspects of her design and gave her more generic looking clothing someone could easily say "yeah that's a Cleric ala D&D or Pathfinder."

So did you call her a generic fantasy babe because her dress is showing off legs, cause I can't and do not get that feeling from her at all. If it is because of her dress, then the vibe it gives is more "elegant and free" than "showing legs to be hot". A woman CAN show skin, and it does not always mean "look she's sexy". Karma's potrayal ingame and in her splasharts are always focusing on her being spiritual, and meditating of some sorts. A C is a weird grade to give her, and you literally did not give any reason for it.
