Garen is kinda perfectly bland because he's the most stereotypical design for a "big tank who does lots of damage." Since Garen is usually someone's first or second pick when they start the game it's great for a new player to be able to say "I wanna pick big sword guy!" and do things that are big and involve using a sword.

One of the very few things about the last two seasons of the new Voltron was an episode where the Paladins all played DnD... and Shiro basically played himself. Then he died, and played his brother - who was essentially just himself with a different hat on.

The funny thing is that this is pretty much canon as the D&D skins are what the characters themselves would play on a campaign and Rugged Garen is his D&D skin

Garen wouldn't be a bad player at the table, would probably only rp himself but would stay "in character" and probably be good at combat, unlike say Sion who is also the Barbarian/Warrior who only wants to play combat but isnt good at it and gets your party into awful encounters.

Any Sword n Shield fantasy needs a Garen stereotype it's just a classic. Also the fact he fancies Kata adds to his personality for me. He acts like a square jawed steel paragon for his people and the soldiers, but he's also kinky and that betrays he's either insincere about his true values or balancing out the weight of having to be an idol of devoutness and valor. In short, all duty and no boney makes Garen a dull boi

Their release cadence hasn't really been that bad in these last 2 years i'd say. The biggest problem is tying most of the character development to big events that, sure, move that region story forward... but still leave countless other stories in a very long hiatus until they can be resolved or continued later on.

There are other champion lines that reference their relationship, like Pantheon saying something about being partners in the dance of battle I think Jhin also says something about star-crossed lovers

The ONE interesting thing about Garen that I hope they expand upon more is the running joke that he’s in a not-so-secret relationship with Katarina. For now it seems to be nothing more than a joke, but I think expanding upon that idea is the only hope for Garen to be interesting.

It kind of highlights the fact that he wants and is supposed to be that unflinching pillar of Demacia and it's ideals... but at the same time fell in love with a Noxian and supports his mage sister. I like Garen because of that.

To Garen’s credit, a lot of that genericness would go on to impact Demacia’s general aesthetic and themes, which tends to wear those things better than he does

I love how simple, straightforward, and braindead he is. Both his design and gameplay. Always fun to roll him in ARAM whether it's a losing or winning game.

I think he's okay, not every champ is supposed to be incredible in personality, just like most people are ordinary

Though I’m sure your Ashe video took a lot of time and effort, which was greatly appreciated and culminated into a fantastic project, I would love to see a video on how to “fix” Garen. Hearing about ways to make generally designed characters more interesting without just pumping them full of things would be an interesting character design topic that I would love to hear your take on!

Garen had a recent short story added that i thoroughly enjoyed, called The Soldier and The Hag. which does not change Garen as a character but does show him in a more gritty serious light as a man who takes his ideals so far as to risk everything to uphold them. i do agree a C, he is still just Lux's side character and wont do much on his own.

I can't wait to see your analysis of Mageseeker, love that they fixed the "bothsidesism" when it comes to Sylas.

In the recent comic about Katarina that acts as a prelude to mage seeker they end up clashing and eventually when Katarina came back home she still thought thought about him as the only time she knew peace for a brief second.

I think there was some Swain voice line once about a story potential I wish they’d do smth with. Namely that Garen might not only have a mage sister but that he’s unknowingly *a mage himself*. Like imagine the angst potential of that story beat.

Nonetheless, I love Garen 🤣💖

No mention of Garen's relationship with Kat? Dang, that's his most interesting characteristic.

Well I think this is what they're planning on using to move his story forward. It just hasn't happened yet.

Nah I don’t hate garen. He knows his sister is a mage and hides her, and his love interest being a Noxus assassin is pretty spicy.

He's actually not big at all, if you look at his model, his body itself is pretty thin and stuff...

Honestly at this point I feel like Garen’s character is just, Himbo Man No Thoughts Only Demacia and for that reason the design kinda works. Him being just this ultra patriotic boring dude who has no great reaction regarding anything because he is too busy being “righteous” ends up being a character and a good contrast to other people in his storyline...Like idk, I feel like his idealism helps to sell both the good and the very very bad of Demacia.

@@paulorommel3075 Theres also lots of LoL voicelines acknowledging it. They are alluded to have married in the Spirit Blossom universe. Sure it's been relegated to the back burner but it is still there and Riot writers are still calling back to it. I wouldnt be surprised if they put out a story about it if something ever happens in Demacia or Noxus.

I think fitting a basic design isn't inherently a bad thing only if it isn't done to often and is done well. I think personally you judge basic characters to harshly

I feel it would be cool if they updated his armor to involve the white petracite Demacia uses for anti mage stuff. Like make the pauldrens stone or smth.

Sure, Garen is white bread, but you know what white bread is? A staple. Not only is there nothing wrong with his lore and design being somewhat generic, it helps other designs stand out all the more. I wish Riot would have him make a decision though I think it could be interesting to see him meet Poppy actually, or perhaps become a more subversive element pushing for mages to be accepted.

Well, then I guess he is just an a-hole that cares about his sister (I mean seriously, the only demacian characters that aren't commiting genocide or being portrayed as a villain are Shyvana, Poppy, Galio, Lucian and Senna)

a question, why should every design challenge an archetype rather than embody it? garen is known as a mechanically simple, easy to play champ for beginners, which is more than welcome in an already complicated game, right? just as we need simple champions for mechanical champs to shine, do we not need simple designs as well?

I mean can’t characters be generic and archetypal and still be fun and interesting? I think garden is extremely fun. He’s goofily over the top while still being convincingly badass. I do really like his writing in short stories as well, and the garenxkatarina romance is very fun. Idk man I feel like there’s an idea of generic = bad/boring, which I just don’t think is the case

Which is why I absolutely adore his Miami Vice skin though.

personally i think the only way you could make garen interesting is if you potray him as an antagonist of circumstance. and even then it'd be a hard job to pull off

When I first started League over a decade ago, I had no clue who to play. All I knew was that it definitely wouldn't be Garen.

I really only see Garen for his lore, never really cared much for the design. Hope the weight of that decision he's finally gonna make in another decade or so fucks up his mind royally so that we get more from his character.

if Garen were to have some sort of depth to his character. Either through being outright immoral and adamantly hating magic and by extension his own sister (Lux), or through the more cliché Good Boy in Bad Place trope by rejecting Demacia's anti-magic eugenics... I don't have a point to conclude on, much like Riot avoids deciding on the point of his character.

I do think there needs to be a place for new players to ease themselves into the world of League of Legends. That is to say, if you've never played a MOBA, characters like Garen let you focus on understanding the mechanics of the game without trying to figure out what the hell he is.

I don't mind Garen's design; he's inoffensive. But I want riot to pull an akali and have him turn against Demacia for the sake of Lux. Minor kit changes (his E doesn't _feel_ impactful enough for a main dps ability) and a less overtly Demacian look. Add some asymmetry to his design. It'll never happen though.

Despite the fact his design is lame and boring, I wouldn’t want to change it. His entire character arc is breaking out of the mold and thinking for himself, I feel like any crazy design would hinder the story telling.

Garen is not Sion. Sion is part of Noxus and is Undead. Garen is part of Demacia and isn’t undead. /s But regardless they could be skins of each other in another timeline.

Garen has had like 30 different lore related things from comics to an actual book, yet none have them have pushed his character arc past a couple inches.
