Funny the way pop/rock music works. Back in the early 80s, me and my mates loved Gang of Four because they didn't look or sound anything like mainstream American bands like Alice Cooper and CCR. And now I hear GO4's drummer was into that stuff.

Totally agree with all of this praise! He had great personal anecdotes and while he is in the business, he still seems to have the passion of a fan exploring the vast world of music. The Miles Davis story is incredible. It seems as if he wanted to go on for hours talking about his collection and influences. Just as you think he is done, he moves on to some great books and then to the box sets. Awesome! We need more from people as enthusiastic and knowledgeable as Hugo. And yes, he must love him some John Irving.

I always liked this series--it's a great pain that the Hollywood store is gone. They had a section of old magazines where I'd often found killer publications at "to go" prices. Zines, Sight & Sound, Film Quarterly, Maximum Rock n Roll. Also a robust VHS section often filled with smart & cool movies. Priced very low. The SF & Berkeley stores seem to charge wayyyy too much for VHS tapes. Oh well no sale then. I'm glad Hugo also noted his books. And its cool that a Bay Area band played one of his first concerts and ripped it up. They probably exploded shortly after my one chance seeing Gang of FOur play was at the Fillmore, it felt like the packed room was so moved by the Entertainment era songs that floor moved along with us in waves.
