My teenage self dyed my hair red so fast after seeing Shirley for the first time. Then I went to school with a little mod A-Line mini dress and some knee boots and a boy told me “you look like that girl from Garbage” and I could’ve died happy.

The mid to late 90s was a goldmine for strong women: Shirley Manson, Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, Ani DiFranco, Alanis Morrissette, the ladies of Veruca Salt, Kim Gordon to name just a few..... So many powerful voices who showed vulnerability and strength were 2 sides of an empowered, independent, self sufficient coin.

funny went to school gal in 80s she later on liked the shirly manson style 90s saw the new record in store big dollars but heard live performance on pbs several months ago back in 90s shirley manson style was big but of course was dating gal at the time clueless didnt know what all about of course listended to the records but gal.dating ar the time didnt know about shirleys style but recall was big at the time

Love this band. As a stagehand, I was a local dolly grip, helping shoot a live version of "When I Grow Up", in Madison, WI. Fun day.

Bird With the Crystal Plumage is one of my favorite movies and Butch had the DVD. And worked with the Pumpkins. This man is a legend

Shirley radiates confidence. She doesn’t TALK about she has it-she lives it. Right off the bat her comment about going first because they know how she is. She doesn’t apologize for being who she is. Her lyrics always are rooted in a position of strength. If you think otherwise you are simply missing her sense of irony.

Agreed. The "Queer" video was my introduction to the band and Shirley was both sexy and dangerous in it. She's also friends with one of my other favorite female musicians, Brody Dalle.

I was recently chatting to My cous in Scotland. She was married to the singer in Blood Uncles. When I saw Garbage had a "What's in my Bag?" I said out loud "This is gonna be weird" but Chuck Berry AND The Zombies? Great vid!! And I just ordered a dvd copy of American Epic! How I missed that with all the PBS I watch is beyond me, but I'll be watching it in 2 days!!

I kind of like it when brief samples of a song plays in the background of a review, because in some cases, it only takes a few notes for it to catch my attention and it helps give exposure to some artist/songs I might not have come across. Lol, that being said, I'm about to be all over Cigarettes After Sex to check them out. Just need to know what PJ Harvey song is playing while Shirley's talking about her 'Rid Of Me' T-shirt. I don't think it's on that album. Anywho, I'm glad I clicked on this to find out that Garbage has new music out. Loved that exit song (If I lost You). As with a lot of their previous music, it catches my ear pretty quick and that it sounded so comforting. Thx for posting.

Great episode! I remember when I sent Garbage a painting I made of them back when they were (unbeknownst to me) recording Beautiful Garbage, and two weeks after I sent it I got a letter from Shirley thanking me for it and telling me how much she loved it. I like to think I've accomplished a lot in my career as an artist so far, but that remains the pinnacle of my personal artistic achievements.

Impeccable choices all around. What a band.

Met them backstage in 2000. My daughter and I were the only ones allowed. We were there for about a half hour. We were offered food got signed pics and Shirley told my daughter who was in high school to do good and stay in school. They were so nice to us. A memorable night. They played at Mt. Holyoke College in Amherst Ma.

I saw garbage over a year ago in newcastle and were brilliant love shirley and would make love listening to music any day 😊

I was pleasantly surprised. They have great taste in music. Normally when I really like a band I'm caught off guard by the music they like but this was not the case with Garbage
