Gang of Four cover personal politics and are not "Political" with a big "P". These guys are definitely my Bob Dylan. I really liked the mention of/comparison to Mike Leigh, but I loved it when Andy Gill mentioned Godard. It's fun to look at Entertainment! as the aural equivalent of a film like Weekend or Pierrot le fou. Regarding "selling out", I believe that having integrity is the issue. Gang of Four were releasing cutting edge, exciting and challenging music while signed to EMI. They also did the same thing in 1978 while on early Indie label Fast Product. But would they have reached as many people and be as popular today if Entertainment! was released on Fast instead of EMI? Hell no! Sure, they'd be an amazing cult band, frequently lamented as "underrated" and cherished by record nerds like me, but they'd nowhere near as iconic. The problem is that most bands signed to huge labels--ESPECIALLY today--are completely vapid, have no musical integrity and do not release exciting and challenging music, and this has nothing to do with them being on a major label or not. Now if a band like Iceage or The Horrors were on a major (although Matador and XL aren't exactly boutique Indie labels), I would still be just as much of a fan because they make genuinely interesting and sincere music, with guitars I might add. I was excited when I heard "Natural's Not in It" on that XBox commercial, not only due to the irony of the song's meaning in relation to today's time-sucking, mind-numbing gaming systems, but also because it was astounding hearing music that good in the mainstream media. I hold their music dear, but I can't hang with petty exclusivity.

I'm so grateful that i had the opportunity to see them live 3 times. They were one of the best live bands I've ever seen. Didn't want to see the band without Jon King and now that Andy Gill is gone, I'm just so grateful. Pioneers in making great music. They will be missed.

Me too..in Chicago. I was blown away every time I saw them. I will miss them ESPECIALLY Andy. I connected with him on many levels.

Andy is one of the best innovators.

Rest in peace Andy Gill. Sad day !

Great interview....discussing the ambivalence of life as it's reflected in their music. To Hell With Poverty!!

Enjoying the interview despite the interviewer. They were patient with him.

The really sad day is when we lost Ghomeshi as an interviewer. Despite his rather bent personal proclivities he was a superior, sublime, scholastic interviewer. Still miss him after all these years. Praying for his redemption and return to his rightful throne: Capital Q

27:10 would have been nice to hear Jon's answer about selling out to Apple, instead Andy talks over him twice in a row. Interestingly Jon went his own way soon after this interview. Good interview however, thanks for posting.

Good interview!! he asked why why why didn't you play Israel, does this interviewer live in a cave with no tv and internet.certain bands are motivated by the shekel human rights dont mean a thing ,total opposite o what happened in South Africa

Patrick Weir he swung a different type of axe for 40 years though. I was surprised. No callouses that’s I noticed which is common with hard playing musicians.

actually i thought this was a really interesting interview in the end. though i disagree with jon maybe about it not being ‘marxist’ (tinged) ... their schrick is totally what marx was about. marx wasnt lenin. marx was trying to expose what economics does and how exchange works in our world in SPITE of what we might think ordianally ...

Calm down, he was cleared of any wrongdoing. Just some spiteful exes trying to ruin him

Anyone who thinks GO4 are Marxist has seriously missed the point ... people wrongly assume from the very name of the Band that they are thinly veiled Left Wing Communists. That's the trouble when irony meets ignorance ... if you listen hard enough you will hear both Andy and John tell you exactly where they are coming from ... and with an EMI signing from the off ... it isn't Marxism.

Although I agree that they aren't "Marxists", they clearly come from that type of thinking. Jean luc godard was heavily influenced by marx. Same with bertolt brecht and gang of four are very influenced by the situationist international movement which again is heavily influenced by marx.

Very interesting interview. However, the Vichy State was not set up by the Germans occupying France. The 3rd Republic collapsed and handed power over to the aging Maréchal Pétain.
