Holy crap, I didn't realize just how poisonous Bubsy's presence was. For Bubsy's mere existence to cause seasoned game programmers to leave the industry altogether; for employees to hang gifted plushies of the character from nooses around the office to discourage development of future Bubsy games; for Bubsy's first voice actress to express shame for ever voicing the character in the first place - I'm blown away. I knew Bubsy was hated by pretty much everyone on the outside, but I had no idea just how despised he truly was. It really is a beautiful thing. Nobody liked Bubsy then, and still nobody likes him now.

Surprised you didn't spend some time in the Shadows of the Damned section to talk about how No More Heroes made the guy's boss into a big whiny sociopath of a villain in Travis Strikes Back and III, that fits even more into showing how rough a time that development was. There's two games I would like to briefly add to this conversation: Spongebob Sqaurepants: SuperSponge, and Smash Bros Melee. SuperSponge is interesting becuase during development, one of the debs decided to get their frustration of the game out by drawing Spongebob porn. The craziest part is that the files for them are still ON THE DISC. So when people datamined the game years later, they stumbled across... that. Smash Bros Melee is a game that Sakurai hated working on due the insane crunch for it. He had to do everything in 16 months, and he does not look back at it fondly. I bring up Melee beucase it is a game that just refuses to die. Imagine creating a game that you end up hating, only for the community to twist the game into something it was never supposed to be and have people compare it to everything else you've made. This is probably a major reason why Melee has never had a remake or rerelease of any kind. Becuase Sakurai will throw someone out a fucking window if it did happen.

The elivator pitch for Kurayami is maybe the dumbest and most insulting thing EA could have told the devs. Has EA not seen the fanbase behind Dark Souls? That story is barely even explained in game let alone explainable in an elivator ride. EA should maybe get their CEOs' heads out of their asses and maybe look at the gaming landscape once in a while.

@peterprime2140 I mean... yeah, but that's also the story they tell in the first cutscene and usually the only cutscene that has any story in any of the games. And I guess to be fair, not a lot of people play the games for the story. But effort into a story is important in my eyes, especially if it's something the creator is proud of. I would want to see that original vision they all had for the game. The game sounds super interesting.

@deltaknight2764 I only heard about Unity's dumb practice yesterday and blamed them for what they did. Finding out now that it was the decision of one stupid man who left boils my blood more than I think it should. I guess I just care about art a lot, and the game engine, while technically not art itself, is used to make art. Making people charge a royaltee fee to sell their game using your engine even if you wanted the game to be free is scummy behavior. It'd be like charging painters to use a specific colour because one artist pattented the colour despite having no part in the making of it... (looking at you, Anish Kapoor)

One thing not mentioned in the video is RWS actually got 3 back on Steam with the DRM removed (and the bugs it caused) on Friday the 13th! Sadly the money still goes to the other company, not RWS, but it's there if people want to see how bad it is. Also a fun fact, because it's on the Source engine, the devs had access to some Valve content... and in 2020 the beta build leaked and it contained data for early builds of TF2 and Half Life 2 Episode 2!

Maybe it's because I grew up playing it, slowly getting better at it as I got older. Yeah, it's super hard and the one-hit death feels cheap a lot of times but I found that if you played the game to explore it rather than to just rush through it blindly it was a lot more-manageable than a lot of KZread gameplay videos make it out to be.

I think the reason why people play Bubsy more quickly is because with how it looks like he plays, the Bubsy games are meant to be more of a Sonic clone than a Mario clone. If Bubsy stuck more to a Mario style of game, then maybe Bubsy would have done wonders and had a proper spot. With that said, I believe that SomeCallMeJohnny actually said that the level design being so big works *Against* Bubsy, because there's nothing to find. Sonic gives Power-Ups, 1-Ups, Rings, and Chaos/Super Emerald stages, Mario also gives a few good Power-Ups, 1-Ups, and even a World Skip or Alternate Paths. Players are rewarded in Sonic and Mario for going off the beaten path. Bubsy doesn't offer that. It doesn't offer anything for going off the beaten path except more cheap and unfair deaths. So when it comes down to it, you're just left with a game that offers nothing but a race to the end with no reason to leave the set path that's longer than it should be due to unfair stage design and enemy placement with no way to alleviate or get around it. Compound a character that's trying so hard to be funny it ironically isn't funny at all, and you just have a sad game that can't even stand up to the Plumber or Hedgehog at all.

Touhou has had rough design periods with two of its official games and neither was fondly remembered by their creators. Team Shanghai Alice (read: one person not named Alice that doesn't live in Shanghai) had designed Touhou 8 to be the final game in the series so he added as much content as possible. This turned out to be a bad idea for him because he had to design interactions for every team, make mechanics to account for a tag team, having bosses exclusive to certain routes, two final bosses and also the Last Words. And wasn't worth it in hindsight because it was neither the last game in the series nor anywhere near the fan favourite game, though at least the Last Words and new characters were well received. Nowadays he works with his wife and tries to focus on streamlining relatively shorter games so he doesn't struggle as hard with the main games. The side games that are handled by Twilight Frontier are a different story. 17.5 started out promising but a certain 2020s event that was later referenced in the tie-ins really complicated things. Twilight Frontier is a very small team, so they couldn't use solutions like tagging in and out and they also had to keep in touch with ZUN. These problems were only complicated by 17.5's selling point: it was a brand new gameplay style for the series. The result was a very glitchy game and Twilight Frontier announcing they're not working with Touhou again. Even when the Switch port with added content came out, it still had its fair share of issues such as boss!Murasa's oddly selective hitbox or surprise game freezes. The one that took the cake was a bug introduced in an attempted patch that rendered the game software *unable to start* until it was updated again.

@@epicfail7874 my thoughts exactly. Between the Switch port of Touhou 17.5's "fix" and NIS Classics Volume 3 having a game crash at a fixed point in the La Pucelle Ragnarok main story that literally rendered the game unwinnable pre-patch, I ended up more lenient to Pokemon Scarlet despite the fact that most of the glitches I encountered while playing the base game were crashes.

So... what's the grand lesson about all of this? ...Making video games is hard and that maybe people should understand that pushing your employees to the limit while also trying to sometimes chases trends for the sake of making money can make people hate the end-product? That what a person's vision for the game matters and ultimately should be considered instead of thrown aside because you don't like the concept personally? That, in all genuine seriousness, you should maybe treat your employees better and not make the position of developing the game a revolving door to the point where the company who was telling you to make the game has to step in? ...Nah, the lesson is that apparently Bubsy was hated quite a lot and that the former CEO Of EA is really really terrible. (In all seriousness though; people should start looking into game development more and realize that games aren't easy to make and you should support a game taking more time to be developed. Yes, we could have a Duke Nukem Forever situation but sometimes it is worth it waiting for the game to release) (And this is speaking as someone who thought game development was easy at one point... let that sink in)

Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric. Big Red Button had a vision, then Sega said "lol no". They developed on an engine that every plattform at the time was compatible with...except WiiU. And Sega said "it's only on Wiiu now". That alone already broke the game and ruined the company because they had to crunch like heck to make it work at all. QA staff had to be ignored because they already barely pushed out a game that was buggy and unfinished by the deadline. Additionally, Sega dictated the narrative content to be changed to both fit with the TV show that nobody knew anything about at the time and to fit the very low writingstandard of the main series. And dictated that a fanfavorite character that they had no ideas what to do with be included, pushing them under active fire by the fanbase. So basically, they were in shambles, fans hated them, their resume was now one of the worst WiiU games(and one of the worst Sonic games) ever, Sega pushed the blame to them for financial losses and the final game barely had anything to do with what they originally wanted to make. Company pushed out a singular big fixpatch to leave it in a "functional state", died.

On the subject of what happened to Suda, thats another good topic! Games that have their original vision ruined by others. EA could easily qualify with a lot of games with how many franchises they destroyed for money.

The story of shadows of the damned and the subsequent follow up bits with Travis Strikes again and no more heroes 3 could be a topic for a video in and of itself. David Ratatello is gaming's greatest villain and the best service a developer did was make him a compelling and memorable villain...by only slightly exaggerating what a piece of shit he was (cause I don't think he personally physically assaulted Suda like was described in Travis Strikes again. Also congratulations on 100k!

I think it's safe to say that the vast majority of successful games were no fun to make, otherwise we'd see mega-hits all over the place. It's becoming a more well-known fact (not just a suspicion) that Nintendo developers (particularly Miyamoto) hate making the games you like, particularly 2D Mario, and would much rather make more Pikmin installments that do sell modestly, but not super great. You can tell Nintendo REALLY hates making the ultra-popular Wii Sports series. It isn't just unusual levels of restraint, there has to be a reason why the series is approaching 2 decades and there have only been 4 installments. They only like making popular games as long as it pays for things they enjoy making.

Postal 4, from what I heard, is an actually pretty good Postal game, save the weird as shit ending that implies the Postal Dude actually has the capacity to get bitches. The game is about as glitchy as you'd expect from a Postal game, though, and that's probably what lead to its low scores, plus Postal just being if South Park lost its marbles, and decided to make the most batshit insane product one can manage.

So when you discussed Suda51 and (briefly) his involvement in in No More Heroes 3, I wound up mistaking him for Yoshiro Kimura, who was involved in the first two games as well as Moon: Remix RPG Adventure, and more to my point, Chulip. Even though I've gotten these two people mixed up, I might as well go ahead with what I came back here to do: please play Chulip, on your own or for a video. It's a hell of a game (not to say it's good), and I have a soft spot for it. Just use a guide- and a better guide than the one that originally came with the game when it released outside of japan.

About 11:35 "Postal 2: Corkscrew Rules!" was made by VERY different team - Avalon Style Entertainment (they made a "Deus Ex" - like weak RPG, but made a good trilogy of "UAZ Racing 4×4" games with its last game "Off-Road Drive"). They were passionate in what they were creating, even though having some ups and downs. But Trashmasters... well, they had big games in mind ("Postal 3" and cancelled "Axel Rage"), but was able to release only one-type cheap games. They even proudly named their strategy "trash-n-cash" - make a minimum working game with some prepared gameplay elements in less than a year. And so their questionable view of the series (without thoughtfuly created games before) got into Postal series... What a shame.
