Games O' Canada - Supermarket Sweep Revisited

In another special revisiting episode of The Games O' Canada, Marc Power brings some holiday cheer while talking about the Canadian version of Supermarket Sweep. As a bonus, he also talks about the Quebecois counterpart as well. It's two Sweeps for the price of one. Hope you all enjoy it.

Supermarket Sweep is one of those game shows that always come back around over time. maybe GSN would show this, it's a 90's classic.

Those postal codes in Canada and United Kingdom are alphanumeric. The format for Canadian Postal Codes is in this order letter-number-letter then number-letter-number.

In the UK reboot it was like the French soaking version with it being sponsored by British Supermarket TESCO

A supermarket sponsoring the show makes sense to me, nabob sponsoring the show here, felt too random.

Actually got to see this version on a daily basis in Buffalo when it originally aired because my tv antenna was able to pick up CHCH out of Hamilton, Ontario, which aired the show. I just thought it screamed "Cheap!" in so many ways, and the bonus round scroll wall was a real turn-off for me. To make a Canadian comparison, it was like the American Supermarket Sweep was Loblaws (Or Atlantic Superstore and Dominion where you're from, Marc.) and the Canadian version was the yellow No-Name brand version of it.

The Québec version was so much better, especially the prizes. I'd take a flat $2000, rather than a 1/16 chance at $5000 but a 15/16 chance at some pathetic prize like a recliner, a combination CD/laserdisc player, or the infamous "all expenses paid trip to CUBA!!"

I've seen a couple of shows, where they win a lesser prize like say $500 cash or $1500 his and hers watches and they seem a little disappointed that's all they get. 🙁

I think the prize board after the bonus sweep felt a little tacked on, a little too luck-based. But, I really like their music package, especially the theme song. Plus, despite a three-year run, the show did have a memorable moment where the clock ran out and the team member slid across the floor and their cart crashed into the checkout. Oh and nice magic trick by the way, Marc. Happy Holidays!

“I guess the exchange rate applies to time as well.” LOL Not even Albert Einstein can explain that.
