Games O' Canada - Crossword Quiz

In an absolute first on The Games O' Canada, Marc Power talks about a pilot called Crossword Quiz. It's like Crosswits, but Canadian and didn't sell for some reason or another. Marc talks about that and a brief history on other game shows based on Crossword Puzzles! Enjoy!

This was not a pilot at all, but a production of the AV/radio department at Brierton College. Harry Spiegel was an actor who, at this point in his career, had appeared on the Wayne and Shuster Comedy Hour and the John Candy film Find The Lady. He eventually got some other bit parts in TV movies and commercials in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s.

That's specifically Hot Butter's more well-known cover of "Popcorn", not the Kingsley original.

Speaking of Popcorn, that theme IMO, oughta be used as the background for TPiR’s Pushover game.

Besides Crosswits, there was another crossword puzzle game show that was more successful, and that's People Puzzler on GSN. Crossword Quiz makes Million Dollar Word Game look good. And THAT is saying something.

Probably the only crossword show I’ve liked was Merv Griffin’s Crosswords. It wasn’t a perfect game show but it did the best it could. MGC is in my heart because it’s normally the first show I watch coming from High School.

Damn shame that Canada didn’t get its own Scrabble

It was for the best that Canadian game show should not see in Canada.

Nice how you included the second theme song for The Cross-Wits at the end of the video. It's no wonder that Crossword Quiz didn't sell. The game was lousy.

That was a great show, The Cross-Wits is a very underrated game show of the '70s and 80's, it was way ahead of its time, I hope GSN would show this one, and Merv Griffith's Crosswords. it would be great.

GSN already has a crossword related show: People Puzzler.

They've shown a couple of episodes of the 86 revival of cross-wits. The original is supposedly still intact but has never been shown in reruns for whatever reason. 🤨 as far as MGC goes....It didn't do that great so not sure what demand there is for it in reruns. I agree the original cross-wits in underrated, they were so clever with the clues it almost felt like the writers were in competition to see who could come up with the silliest clue. One stands out to me: 9 letters, Jack does this odd Tennessee accent: "On towards this town I'll soon be starting and falling in love, I want Dolly Parton". Pat McCormick: It's that a poem or are you having a fit? The 86 version just felt more generic and rushed, the writers just wrote pretty generic clues. Should have been better than it was.

@@marcpower4167 It's gotten better, the further along it's gotten. I just wish they didn't give away so many "free letters"; it makes the game too easy.

I agree with Marc: This wasn’t feeling a pilot, it’s more like a “proof of concept” run-through.
