Gamechanger Audio Brought their Plasma Pedal by our shop in Burbank CA so we could make a video with it. We ran a drum machine, synth and guitar through it. The Plasma Pedal runs your audio through a high voltage xenon tube, which not only makes for a great sounding distortion, but looks cool as well.

works best on low sounds.

How is it a gimmick? I have one and it doesn't compare to any other distortion effect.

It works by sending your audio signal through a transformer stepping it up to a couple thousand volts then sending that voltage into the gas discharge tube. The act of doing that creates a bunch of RF energy which is then picked up by an internal antenna and converted back into audio.
really want to like this pedal but it sounds like a busted speaker

I'm not into the pedal. It makes guitar's sound like light sabers. I would rather just have a light saber. Jedi Technology has better uses, I'm sure.
