Game Boy Mod Tutorial 02 - Preventing Newton Rings (these look like wet spots on screen)

Ойындар

I've found or created a number of tips to improve my Gameboy Mods over the years. Here we learn how to prevent those nasty "wet spots" or newton rings on the game boy screen. I've fixed mods other sellers sold that developed this problem. The powder I use is called diatomaceous earth.

---------------------
I am starting a new process to help match (United States only) buyers with the Game Boy of their dreams.
The process works like this:
You direct message me a description of the DMG you want (please use the email address on my KZread about page / bogamanz ). I have original Grey shells and all play it loud colors in stock. You also let me know what backlight color you desire. (yellow, orange, green, or clear)
We work out a price. I can adjust to your budget by using Game Boys with more wear. The price will be between $60 and $100 shipped.
I create a Game Boy to your specifications.
I then send a special private youTube video in 1080p to show off your unit. I will demo the buttons, audio, screen, and shell. If you still want the Game Boy, you will send me an email letting me know you want to go forward.
If you do not want the Game Boy, I will simply list on ebay. No hard feelings!
Once I get your approval , I send you a paypal invoice with terms of sale. This will include my 14 day no questions return policy. You will be covered by paypal’s buyer protections. Go here for more info: www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/pa...)
Once you submit payment securely via paypal, I will ship with tracking.
Please let me know if this is something that interests you!

Got my diatomaceous earth at Menards in the pest killer section of the garden area. Thanks for sharing this trick, it works perfectly.

I'm glad you were able to find it locally. This stuff is a great kid/pet safe pest deterrent too.

bogamanz yep! I have used it for a handful of mods but I'm pretty sure it's enough in the bag for 10 full lifetimes of constant modding

This actually works very well. I just used some flour and it works just as well.

Glad to hear flour works! I do think I'd prefer something that isn't edible in case it attracts bugs (not that they could get in that tight space).

Mine had two dark spots between the polarizer and LCD (they turned into bright spots when the console was on), and I did this with some corn starch. Worked great.

Thank you!!! I cannot count the number of times I've had my stupid Gameboy apart trying to figure out what do do about this. Also, I didn't realize how many people pronounce diatomaceous incorrectly until I saw your video. The top KZread result (which seems to be the pronunciation you're using) is completely wrong, lol. The root word is pronounced "Die-uh-tom". Also, the main problem with using flour and corn starch is that the lipids present in them will eventually break down and act as perfect food for mold. There's almost no chance that there weren't mold spores in the flour.

There appears to be some debate in the comments here on the correct pronunciation. Can you connect with the other commenters and sort this out?

Great video, I never knew there was a fix for that! What brand do you use? Seems crazy that you don't even see the particles between the screen after you brush it on.

+MrCrono666 I don't think the brand matters much. This dust is super fine by nature. Baby/talcum powder should do the same thing as well. Thomas Labratories Diatomaceous Earth Powder is the exact product I bought. It is also great at keeping insects out of garages and hard to reach spaces.

I can't really see it in the video if it's the same problem I have... but I keep getting air bubbles. I've modded a dmg and two pockets and they all have weird "bubbles" (and Pockets both have a dark spot) but the bubbles only appear when it's fully assembled. Will the powder help this?

Yes I do think so, especially if it looks wet! Try some fine powder.

Is that just a basic makeup brush? Or something special? I have this spot on my screen from case pressure. i use a white back light in a gbp so it show up as a pretty big white spot in games. i have tried different rotations of the polar screen. But i am unable to buy another kit right now to see so when i do, i want to buy a brush and the dust too.

OfficialFBomb this brush is called a fan brush and can be bought cheaply from a art supply store. I imagine that you could spread the powder using a cloth or some other method too. On the pocket there is a chip on the display ribbon that can make a little pressure spot.

Well problem is, when it change direction of the polar film the spot moves too. so its something to do with the case squeezing the components together. But since the spot does move i know its the polar film, but paying for just a film on top of shipping is kind of ridiculous.

Hey, do you know what causes little dark spots on the screen? I have one, each in a different place, on both of my backlight biverted DMGs. Is it damage to the LCD?

Dark spots can be a defect with an aging screen or caused by improper cleaning/handling during the mod. If a DMG has spots before you mod, they are not likely to go away. Sometimes they do because the flaw was on the polarizing film (that you remove during the mod), not the screen.

Holy shiiiiiet. It worked! Combine that with a bit of compressed air to get rid of the excess. It worked great! Though I used my girl’s makeup powder and brush. 👍🏻

I don't think this is the same but I get screen bleeding when I do my pocket mod. If I don't screw in the screws all the way it goes away. So I believe there is more pressure put on the screen because of putting the back light in. Is there any other way to fix this? I'm guessing I could sand down the plastic inside to make more room but that seems like a lot of trouble. Does this method in your video stop this kind of bleeding of the screen?

Is your pressure point a single area? pockets have a chip on the back of the ribbon cable that sticks out. You need a very thin backlight panel and often some padding to make it go away.

I got the backlight from hand held legends. Is that one too thick? Is it easier to mod a dmg?

Is this the new version or the old? HHl used to sell thick panels. Yes the original DMG is far easier to mod.

I have no idea if it's new or old. I bought them a few months ago. I think I'll do a DMG next. Thanks for the response.
