Want a bigger screen in your DMG?
Not many of these have are in the wild today, so I wanted to compare this mod to my bivert mods. This is a great product despite a few bugs/issues. Order yours here: bennvenn.myshopify.com/produc...

Very slick, I have some of these on the way. I also intend to make a red one.

I love my back lit gameboy. Grate to whip out on the bus or in public places. People really seem to like it but some how have no idea that it never had a back light to begin with o_O

Thanks for the review! interesting results with the link cable. There shouldn't be any difference as there is no interaction between the modules. I'll try to replicate it tomorrow. I've noticed the screen lost sync. Do you remember what you were doing when it happened? was it while starting a game on the ED? or a random startup? I'd like to replicate that and fix the code. I also have a few ideas to decrease blur. If they work out they'll be on v2. Thank you very much for being an early adopter! You've helped develop this product further and I'll be sure to send a v2 proto your way for beta testing.

The skewed screen seems random (perhaps related to battery life) and is not limited to the Everdrive. I get that pattern with real carts too. The Everdrive is designed to show the Nintendo logo twice. Once when loading the game selection UI and once after selecting the game. Sometimes the skew happens on the second load only. After playing with the ED for a longer period, I get a worse screen bug where random glitches appear on the screen after rebooting. I have to let the machine cool before the screen returns to normal. The good news is the screen has not failed during long game play. The link issue only occurs when when using the Everdrive. I just duplicated it with F1 Race linking a normal DMG to this one with an ED in both systems. The link did not work for this combo. When I replaced the 3" system's ED with a EMS 64 mega bit smart cart and changed nothing else, the link worked. It would be interesting for someone else who has an ED to verify this. I love being an early adaptor. I work in a product role so am perhaps more critical than others, we are always trying to improve. I look forward to evaluating V2 when it is ready.

I've changed a bit of code and now completely eradicated any sync-loss. It was due to a state machine not resetting when a flash cart triggers the reset line. Thanks for pointing this out!

Ben have you noticed that your start button is wonky or is it just my sample? It seems that it simultaneously registers as an "up" press. In most games this doesn't matter, but is making the original "worms" unplayable.

Another customer reported the same thing over the weekend. I have a fix for it that involves a bit of nail polish. If you look closely at the Start and Select pads you'll see a tiny bit of gold between the pads, You need to either mask this or remove it with a sharp blade. The easiest fix is a dab of nail polish on a tooth pick and just touch it up. This will be fixed on the next batch of boards

Here is a good discussion www.reddit.com/r/Gameboy/comments/528qbs/my_first_gameboy_mod_backlight_bivert_decoupling/ Check it soon as ebay is going to kill the "ebay guides" soon where I originally popularized that mod.

Do you know if there are any of these screens available for Game Boy Pocket? This could literally my two Game Boy Pockets with dead screens.

You should check out BenVenn's offerings yourself, but I don't think you'll see that anytime soon. The clearances in the pocket's case are a bit tight to add a modern LCD and the the hardware required to convert the pocket's signals to be compatible with a modern LCD.

The issue with 2-player games not working with these new LCD / PCB pairs is solved if both units have the new LCD: imgur.com/GEfesn8. I have only tested this with Battle Arena Toshinden though would be very surprised if it was not universal.

Not sure I see the point in butchering a DMG for this mod. The quality of the screen seems no better than the original (except for the size) and a standard screen with a backlight looks just as good.

A few ideas: If you mod many DMGs, you will have a bucket of good cartridge boards where the LCD board is dead or has horizontal lines or something. This will allow you to restore them. BennVenn's screen looks better in the sun than the standard backlight. When playing the right games, it looks much better.

While this screen may not be absolutely perfect, it is this development of aftermarket LCD's that will eventually lead to a drop in replacement that has the image quality you'd expect from a modern device. This LCD isn't there yet, but I feel it is a big step forward, a larger image, higher contrast and better full sun image quality. I've prototyped a few different LCD types, they've all had people commenting much like you. Too small, Incorrect Aspect, Too big, what's the point of butchering a dead DMG that would otherwise be stripped for parts? It's thanks to early developers like bogamanz and the ~40 others that fund further development into not only DMG displays but also a true backlit GBC LCD. Personally I prefer using the larger screen than a backlit/biverted DMG. It is my go-to DMG console.

This is exactly why I bought (and will buy more of) these LCDs, to give a grip of Gameboys I have with various screen problems another go at it.

I guess for DMG's that have completely dead screens, it makes sense, but for a perfectly working DMG, theres no point butchering it for this mod.

For certain applications I think a larger, brighter, clearer screen is better than the original. In particular LSDJ

I have a large box full of them. I guess it’s better than the folks that reshell and toss the original shell.
