GAM 178: Science Falsely So Called

Музыка

This week, we offer up an atheist review of "Science, Falsely So Called", the movie where an uneducated, gullible, indoctrinated zealot explains how stupid Stephen Hawking is. Literally. And he does so with the help of a convicted felon and a man banned from at least three countries for inciting violence against minorities. It is, at once, the high and low point of our show.

Fucking great episode! I had the same journey through the film that you guys joked about: from 'Matt's just a young guy being led astray' to 'FUCK YOU MATT POWELL'. But that journey took about 75 seconds, since that part of the screenplay just said HITLER! EVOLUTION! HITLER! COLUMBINE! EVOLUTION! AAAAATHEISMM! I was trying to record my honest reactions in the comment section under the movie. I had to pause to laugh-rage after every single event in the flim: every sentence, written or spoken, and every image. I made it through 7 minutes of movie in about 60 minutes of my life before I realized how much of my life it was going to occupy. Thank christ I have you guys to suffer through the whole film, for me.

You might want to check the comments under Powell's newest movie, The Atheist Religion, that the guys reviewed a couple of weeks ago. Noah said the comments were ~35% 'Yay, Matt; Go God!'; ~35% pro-science folks shitting on the movie who came upon the movie by chance; and ~30% GAM fans who watched it ahead of the review and shat on the movie on purpose. You might feel better by doing this. Unless, of course, Mattie P decided to remove the negative comments like he removes the best parts of the pro-science folk he interviews in his 'movies'.

Regarding "behemoth" and its tail: First, the passage says "moves like a cedar". It does _not_ say as _big_ as or as _thick_ as. The line refers specifically and exclusively to movement, _not_ size. Second, they obviously could not be referring to the Western Red cedar, indigenous to North America and Australia, but to the only cedar in the Middle East, the Lebanese cedar, which looks _and_ sways much like an elephant's tail. Third, it's entirely possible that "cedar" was not referring to a tree at all, but was instead referring to an _object_ called a "cedar": a switch made from a stripped branch used to whip one's vicinity to keep flies away. This looks much like an elephant's tail, and is flicked around like one, so is a possible etymology of the term. Fourth, it's made very clear that, with respect to behemoth, its "nose pierceth the snare". The animal "behemoth" is definitively referring to an African elephant; the only way to deny this is to lie about what the Bible states quite explicitly. Leviathan, by the way, is a reference to a Nile crocodile. Charlatans like Hovind try to misrepresent them as dinosaurs. They're not (NSS). Addendum: When Creationists refer to "90% of animals coming around at the same time", they are most definitely not referring to anything occurring 200,000 years ago. They are referring to the Cambrian Explosion, which occurred 541 million years ago. And the claim about 90% of animal life appearing abruptly is true if fifty million years is "abruptly" (in geological terms, it actually is), is at best a half-truth, and would be irrelevant if it weren't explained by evolution anyway.

Fun fact that explains petrified polystrate trees and why they can't be made anymore, to be used because I don't hear it a lot in these discussions. Trees evolved, but they didn't start out with the bugs or bacteria that broke down the wood after death. And especially the fungi. So yes, dead trees literally just sat there for years, thousands of years actually. They did indeed have time to just sit and fossilize.

Lignin is hard to digest, even today not many strains of bacteria do it.(fungi are the ones eating most of it) Ancient trees had many times more lignin than current trees, which made them last even longer.

It's a quote from the new testament. It is warning people to stay away from teachings about Jesus that vary from the standard understanding taught by the NT authors, probably warning against Gnosticism. The word used in other translations, and in the original Greek, is ''knowledge' not 'science', but since these idiots are King James Only fanatics, they go with the word used in the KJV, which was 'science'. But in the KJV, 'science' means 'common knowledge', not what we call science today. So they misunderstood the warning against 'what is called common knowledge' as a warning against modern sciences that they don't like. Like geology, evolution, embryology, etc. IOW, these biblical literalists are so fucking ignorant of their own book that they named their silly 'movie' after a stupid mistake.

@@tommcdonald4014 it reminds me of the fact that many fundies will use Paul in general to justify their hostility towards science as something from "the world" to be shunned at, coming from a Romance language background it's a bit easier for me to tell because as you said science also means "knowledge" in Latin and in Spanish it has a double meaning used interchangeably, both to refer to science and knowledge indeed. Growing up Catholic when talking about the Holy Spirit they will say about the "gifts" he gives in the ritual of Confirmation, and one of them is science indeed and back then I figured they didn't mean the more popular meaning.
