Galco's | Visiting with Huell Howser | KCET
Ойын-сауық
Huell first met John Galco back in 2000 when he did a program about the over 250 different vintage soda pops he sold in his store. In this special update, we'll discover that not only has his inventory of vintage sodas doubled in size, but he's also added shelves of classic candy bars! The real joy of the story, however, is finding out how his family has changed and grown since the first visit.

I saw this episode when it came out originally. Still one of my favorite episodes. We miss Huell so much.
I went to Galco's last Sunday. When I walked in I saw the owner John Neece. He is a very nice man. As I was filling my basket he said did you find everything today? I bought some beer, a few soda pops, and some candy. It was a very good experience. One of my favorite Huell Howser episodes. RIP Mr. Huell Howser
a true legend of California rest in peace
I grew up in Highland Park 3 blocks from galcos in the Late 80s, 90s, and mid 2000's. I walked by galcos countless times and never stepped inside. I feel sad for not knowing what a treasure this store is. I now live in Las Vegas and will take my son's and wife to this landmark. Thank you Huell for all your great California adventures, even I didn't know what golden treasure I had in my neighborhood. We need more places like galcos that remain family oriented, where one can buy and taste a childhood memory.

Huell howser you will always be in are hearts love you shows this one was one of my favorite episodes RIP HUELL
Went to Galco's today. It was sad walking thru, knowing Huell had been there too, but that he's gone now. Went over to the sandwich counter and got a sandwich. Those red roof tiles are still there above the lunch counter. Bought most of the soda's Huell talked about, and bought some candy at the back. It was sad to be there! But a great store. Will bring my visitors as a tourist destination. There were quite a few people in there when I was there. As I was leaving, more people were coming in.

+GuyVelella I don't think you read my comment fully, or understood it. There's nothing wrong with the store - it's that it was sad being in the same store as Huell, and that Huell has died. If you liked someone, it's sad being in the same place they were, knowing they'll never come back.

Don't worry, I understand you just fine. There's always a somber feeling to be had, when you walk in the footsteps of a recently deceased person that you looked up to. Even in a happy place like Galco's, it's hard to shake that feeling.

Wendy Arrington Watched it While 🗿🚬 Smoking Some of California's gold!👍 Huell Rocks! To bad The Butt cancer took him from us to soon!
Watching the twins fake drink those sodas at the end is priceless!
Around 1999 or 2000, our Toastmaster's group did something special - and as the Toastmaster, I portrayed Huell (a LOT of fun), and Carol Cunningham portrayed a newscaster from a local station. Carol had worked with Huell when they were at CBS, and Chuck, the picture-taker in the first episode, was one of the members of our Toastmasters group, and shared his experiences with Huell and John at Galco's. I now stop there somewhat frequently to pick up interesting sodas and old candies (like Mallo Cups). What a great place! Met Huell at the Sons of Norway Lutefisk dinner in 2009. A thoroughly nice guy!
That has to be a very interesting store to visit!! I miss Huell!
Huell was one of a kind!
I hope mr huell has a star on the walk of fame he was our tour guide for many years been watching Californian gold since I was a kid I'm near 40 I've been to many of these destinations because of mr houser rip sir u were California's gold
LOVE this place!!! So glad it’s coming through this bad time and surviving in 2021. Makes me wanna go now. Maybe after payday which is tomorrow. It’s also interesting to me as a person who found out about this in 2011, how it’s changed several times since 2000 and it keeps working.
What a cool guy may he rest in peace, thanks for all the cool shows 😎
I watched every minute of this video about soda pop and I loved it. Huell was the best.
Huell shaking up every drink he picks up lol
Miss you huell

I order a few special brands you can't find anymore. Usually order the standard number of Green River and mix in another brand, such as special Dr. Pepper.
RIP to all we have lost in this video. the world is a sadder place because of those lost.
We sure miss you HUELL!

I always enjoyed listening to Huell Howser take us to hidden places in our great state of California. I am finally back to viewing some of his many videos and am sad to hear that he has passed away. Such an interesting, well-spoken gentleman. God speed Huell.
I sure do miss Huell Howser... Thank You for Uploading these wonderful Videos....
My wife and I were at GALCO'S this morning and it's still a great place to be. We highly recommend it . They have a great family spirit and that old fashion candy we grew up on, literally over 500 sodas to choose from and also a great.old time toy section. We love Galco's!

Such a rad dude. Me and my pops always watch this together.
Miss you Huell always!
ive been here and its cool
The owner seems to be a soda pop genius, I could talk to this guy all day about soda 🥤
A few blocks from that historic soda pop store is the oldest Bowling Alley in Los Angeles and you can still bowl on it knocking down old pins and the classic alley wooden floors with vintage art deco makes it a unique good old time to spend, especially as they server drinks in the vintage bar section! Anyways, most of those vintage candy can amazingly be found in any 99 cent Only stores, yes you heard me right... 99 cent Only stores!!!
I went and walked up Fargo street a few years ago before a Dodger game thanks to Huell. Gonna check this place out next.
I miss Huell. I go to Galcos at least once a month
The lady from Mississippi is totally charming. What a sweetheart. So cool. I'm in love.
Rip huell 🙏 im in the uk but one day ill see if i can visit this place.
The way he's shaking the bottle puts me off. Doesn't he realise he's fizzing up the drinks!?

Alan MacLeod They're not like sodas nowadays. I got Moxies Original Elixir which is root beer and it does not fizz a whole lot even when shaken. It tastes amazing though.
There is such a magic to this show.
My Grandfather had Fanta Orange & Strawberry Fanta in his pop machine in his office @ Perry Burke Concrete. His favorite drink was TABB that was also in sold in the pop machine. I remember standing the mountains of Sand & Gravel as kid enjoying my Strawberry & Orange Fanta’s, WoW! I miss him💔Them Day’s❤️
Heull Howser , the real deal. Who can replace him?
John is a cool dude. Went there and bought wayyy too much. It was all good.
Dad's Root Beer was Awesome I loved Making Root Beer Floats....
Awesome !
Just watched an Episode of the Hot Ones with Billie Eilish and they featured a message from John Galco because it's one of her favorite places!! Pretty sure that's her dad picking her up stuff at 50:05
It's probably expensive for vintage soda. I'm 16 so I have no idea what alot of it tastes like. But it would be awesome to try them all. If I had the money I would buy a 6 pack of every vintage soda.

You can buy by the bottle and most range from $1.99-2.99 each.
It was over 20 plus years ago Mr Hauser used to come into our small shop to process and print his personal 35mm film.. 2 for 1. Very hands on person. God bless

Soda pop in bottles is the way to go. Way better taste
This guy knows soda's like Quentin Tarantino knows movies.
RIP Legend
Wow
Blockbuster, a west-coast low-budget Primanti's of Pittsburgh. Grandma's got the shakes today, probably something to do with Huell's animal magnetism. I had the sandwich many moons ago there at Galco's and it was like a basic sub, really basic, but tasted good with well down meat and bread. For awhile the store was open late or 24 hours but that stopped when they were robbed back in the 70s.

*John Nese, not "John Galco"
I came back last year 2022
I have watched about half a dozen of Howser's videos. I am sure he doesn't mean to do it in a bad intention, but he cuts people off alot. Maybe the show's producer is rushing him but it just seem kind of rude.
@jasonharris951

He was the producer. He was a very nice man and anybody who has talked to him would tell you the same thing.
Stop shaking the bottles Huel lol
I think Huell had some kind of unconscious addiction to shaking soda bottles....he shook every bottle he touched.
@alicecooper91

He certainly did, in the episode where he toured the Sparkletts plant he shook a vintage bottle of soda from their little museum display after an old man told him not to 😂

Kind of sad to say I remember drinking those sodas. Sad you say? I'm that old, but I drank those obscure sodas. I remember Dr Pepper and it doesn't taste like it did then. Don't buy Dr Pepper in anything but a glass bottle.

Lmao this place threw me out and insulted me for not having a mask, even when I politely asked for one, I was berated even after telling them I would leave after being asked to. Can’t believe I was excited to support this shop, deplorable behavior for a simple mask

You should always have one with you … even if you are a Covid denier, because they have the right not to serve you if masks are required for entry and you won’t wear one. Do yourself a favor and think of somebody other than yourself for a minute … wearing a mask for a few minutes is hardly an imposition
