Galaxy S24 Real Life Battery Test: Did Exynos Finally do it?

Ғылым және технология

Greetings, here's my extensive review of the new Galaxy S24 Battery (Base).
Including many battery testing apps, charging testing, screen-on-time (SOT), battery passive drain (screen-off-time), camera, calls, video consumption and more.
If you want more tech videos, consider subscribing.
I have struggled to find any review about the battery on this guy when I pre-ordered, so I decided to test it myself.
The model number is:
SM-S921B (256GB)
Both gray and black versions.
It is the EU version, which means it is powered by Exynos 2400.
I'm usually a Snapdragon guy, but this S24 Exynos surely has a trick up its sleeve when it comes to battery efficiency.
This video is not sponsored, I only did it because I could only see S24 Ultra reviews out there and not enough S24 reviews, I hope you like it.

    Thank you for your overwhelming support! I wanted to drain the battery as fast as I could in this one, in order to do the review within the Pre-order window for all people. If you like, I will be making a more detailed one about benchmarks, passive drain, and any detailed review (straight to numbers) you guys want. I also ordered a bunch of new tech, including laptops, tablets and all sorts of devices, if you are a person who is interested in pure numbers without any fancy sponsored videos and ads then consider subscribing.

    I really appreciate that you have made a video about the small base model and especially about its battery life - thank you! The S24 seems to do much better than the last S models with Exynos chips (S22). Nevertheless, the runtimes in your testing seem to be slightly worse compared to the predecessor S23 with SD chip. And as another commentator has already pointed out, one problem with the Eynos models is the Samsung modem within, which draws more power in mobile mode than the SD counterpart. This cannot be verified in a wifi test.

  • @BaraaTech

    @BaraaTech

    Thank you for your informative comment, I, however, have not only been testing the device in Wifi, I also used mobile network, but only 4G+, there was no noticeable difference between it and Wifi, I have measured the current and it both fluctuated between 150 and 220 mah using the app Ampere, therefore it is either (and most likely) a 5G only problem or that it is too little to make a difference.

    Do you know if the S23 base model was tested in the beginning (= before optimizations were done etc) ? I read an article that since its launch S23 has been optimized so the battery life should be 35% increased.

  • @Peter-vo8fx

    @Peter-vo8fx

    @@ae0072 I myself have been using the small S23 since the beginning of last year and the battery life has not improved significantly. With OneUI 6 some users have even reported a decline but this has not been the case for me. From my experience, I would say that you shouldn't expect 35% improvements over the course of a year. Typically, things only change significantly in the first few days or weeks as the device adjusts itself.

    My main problem with exynos is not really the % of difference to SD option. Is the modems. The Exynos phones I used have had always worse Cell connectivity then theis SD counterparts. Even apple use QualComm modems because making a good modem is hard. In my experience up untill exynos 2200 the modems suck. The phones have bad cell coverage when the signal is low, they get worse signal and the disconnetions are common. And internet speeds are bad when you have something like only one bar of signal compared to SD modems. Can You compare Exynos 2400 and SD in a low cell signal place? Compare internet speed and see if they lose signal at the same time? Thanks!

I can't really tell the difference on normal task ,but on normal task the CPU isn't going to run above 70% very often so it's not really saving a lot either. All with SD8.3 3.5 hours on Video Loop at max settings. S24 on 1080p - 100% to 80% S24+ on 1440p - 100% to 70% S24 Ultra on 1440p - 100% to 69% Resolution settings are going to effect the S24+ and S24 Ultra battery life a lot.

    I would not keep ordered S24+ because of camera. It has same nasty blur on close-up photos as S23 series. PS. I heard units manufactured in Vietnam are most likely to be affected. Do know why is that.

  • @BaraaTech

    @BaraaTech

    5 ай бұрын

    Is there any specific setting that causes the blur? I have just tried super close shots with my S24 and no apparent blur was present. Also, both the devices I have shown in this video were made in Vietnam.

  • @jmydy

    @jmydy

    5 ай бұрын

    @@BaraaTech No, no specific settings. Just use the main camera (1x), use flat surface, your desk, print a page or take a magazine and take a photo from such distance that you shoot whole page. Tap on center of the photo to set the focus there. If those units are manufactured in Vietnam I'm pretty sure those are also affected. Share a link to original file if it's possible. Now how to validate - without zooming it might be not noticeable, but with some zoom you might notice blurred text on your photo. In my case center (focus point) was super sharp, also corners were quite sharp, but that strange banana-like shape was always out-of-focus. Also, another option to check (maybe even better), is to use manual mode (pro) with manual focus. When you adjust the focus, software makes the sharp areas green. Take the same object as earlier, perfectly let it be page with text written in small font. Now slowly adjust the focus until green is being shown. Green should appear evenly on whole area of subject (page with text). In my case (na many other users) that green is first displayed for some area (banana-like), then for the rest. So it's like always that banana-like area is slightly out of focus, causing very nasty blur. In result, that blur is affecting how close up photos look like. Quality is degraded. Sometimes it makes small prints on photographed objects to be not readable. Or if you shot a picture of document and then want to reprint it, the print will be not readable at some areas too. Also, if you take portraits, landscape photos and so on, it will be much harder to validate if there is blur, but believe me - it's there and it's degrading picture quality. I took some example photos being "normal" photos taken outside (not a "document scan" photos) and blur was present. A lot of people mistakenly think it's bokeh, but bokeh is totally different thing, though it also produces "blur".

    I recently tried the S23 coming from my iPhone 13 Mini. Charged phone to 100% then activated and used the smart switch software. I'm a very light phone user. Only use about 30-40GB of storage total. The S23 battery drained 21% and was very warm during the switch using a cable connected from iPhone to Galaxy. The process took about 29-30 minutes. The iPhone lost 1% although the Samsun was likely doing all the work. Is that normal? Once the device was setup, I noticed 5G was always running and it was draining the battery fast. I then found out (after calling Samsung) that they no longer allow users to switch off 5G to 4G LTE. They are (and have been) rolling out updates to prevent people from doing this. Truly shocking and in my area 5G kills battery life and makes the device run very warm. You will no longer be able to access network modes settings - they have eliminated this feature. They are also actively stopping the Samsung Band Selection app from working. Just a shame.

  • @BaraaTech

    That is truly horrible, but on S24 you could select all kinds of networks, even down to 2G, 3G, 4G or 5G. About the smart switch, mine also ran hot while transferring, keep in mind it was writing an excessive amount of information then.
