To expand on your point, why isn't an Ambassador, someone who is versed in politics, not present in these negotiations. You entrust the political arena to a "Battlefield" commander? Isn't that an unfavorable scenario... for all of humanity? Other than that, I enjoyed the story.

@17mindgate The author must think his MC is like Captain Picard from Star Trek. I'm fine with a captain fulfilling an ambasadorial role, but the author must first demonstrate that they have earned it.

My thoughts exactly about the nature of Earth's power dynamics. We would have an Ambassadorial delegation negotiate with the Galactic Council and the all of the decisions upon how to proceed would have been made by a united Earth body probably an extension of our current United Nations. It's also not likely that Earth would have not just one Dreadnought vessel but a fleet of them. Reynolds would not simply be a single ship captain but fleet Admiral. In World War II, Eisenhower and McArthur were Five Star Generals to match the Field Marshal level of top military commanders that led Allied Forces in the War. Reynolds would no doubt be a part of the delegation of Earth's leaders. This also jumped too quick to the forming an alliance that decided upon war with the Council, rather than collectively present their proposals to the council regarding the ability of Terran exploration of new sections of the galaxy. That all said, I have been enjoying these stories of this sort since they came my way.

These stories never cease to amaze me that something that could be said in two sentences takes 100s to spit out and get to.

@@sparkeyjames Sure thing, SparkeyJames! Reynolds, a supremely important and competent diplomat and captain of a warship, was negotiating with the galactic council for human right to exploration when: "Captain! Prometheus is under attack!" "Spit," Reynolds muttered under his breath. "Let's go!" Reynolds and his crew jumped aboard the space-borne battle-cruiser and jetted off at warp 110, making their way toward Prometheus with all haste. "Good thing we have the galaxy's fastest warp drives" he told to the navigator. "We'd never make it in time to save the settlement otherwise!" "Aye, Captain. Our engineers are the best. The technological prowess of all other species in this galaxy pale in comparison to ours!" His sense of superiority thus bolstered, Captain Reynolds relaxed back into his seat as his personal masseuse began to massage his tense shoulders. "Ahhhh, that's nice. It is good to be captain", he said. "Aye, Sir", she said. "The burden of leadership weighs so heavily on your broad, strong shoulders, it's no wonder they're all knotted up." "Yes. What weighs most heavily upon my heart is the suffering of our colonists on Prometheus", he said. "But your strong, beautiful hands sooth my anxiety." - - - Blood. Blood everywhere. Charred corpses too. "They will pay for this" he thought, surveying the carnage on Prometheus. "But who?" "Captain!", his personal masseuse called excitedly. "We got a live one!" "Great!" Reynolds said, sauntering over to his masseuse, who was standing over a severely wounded creature. "Time to get some answers. Do whatever it takes to squeeze information from it." "Aye aye, Captain!" she said, roughly picking up and throwing the slight creature onto the portable massage table she always towed behind her. She went to work on the creature, first using her elbows, then her knees and, finally, her hands, literally squeezing the blubbering creature for information. "The Galactic Council", the creature screamed in a voice very much like a squeaky toy, " sent us here to wipe out this colony." "But why?", Reynolds asked. "It was to be a warning against further human expansion into the galaxy", the creature squeaked. "All right, we're done with it. Kill the creature now", Reynolds told his masseuse. "Aye aye, captain!" she said, then squeezed the creature's tiny head with her big, beautiful, strong hands, until the creature's head exploded, showering herself and Reynolds with the creature's gore. Reynolds wiped a hand across his face to remove some of the purple goo, then stuck his finger in his mouth. "Yum, tastes like berries" he said. "Tell my personal chef to collect some of these dead creatures and make some pie for tonight's desert!", Reynolds told one of his crew who happened to be standing there. "Aye, Captain!" "And inform the Galactic Council that we will abide by their restrictions on further human expansion, so long as they keep humanity well-supplied with these creatures." - - - And so galactic conflict was avoided, the human menace contained. Peace ruled the galaxy for millennia, until the creatures went extinct; but that's a story for another time...

Just because you're new to the Galactic neighborhood doesn't mean your mechanics are stupid. Clearly we aren't that new as we've been exploring for enough time to make the council nervous.

KZread must be hurting for revenue since they're determined to put ads in the stories every 2 minutes of so. Absolutely destroys the flow of the story and St. Jude is not getting their money's worth as the ad just clocks.

I am a spacefaring expert, expert in alien diplomacy and the galactic council. I have over 6k hours in Stellaris....I mean the human deep space exploration school. And the only thing I can say, again and again is: Colossus, Colossus, Colossus! Crack, Shield, Flood, Convert. When this xeno scum,....I mean alien races act up and demand things, it is NEVER good for humanity. So I say: Genetically Modify, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate, Purge...uhm sorry, Displace. Rinse Repeat. We can put them in Alien Zoos, Hyperentertainment Forums or maybe Give some to the Ancient Caretakers. The rest must GO! Or, as I always say: I LOVE DEWMOCRACY! I LOVE THE GALACTIC COUNCIL!...However...The council is, in actuality...ONLY ME!

Not a mention of ANY other Earth ships. Does Earth only have the one ship? All the other races have "Fleets", yet Earth with one lone ship? The fate of Earth reliant on one lone ship captain. No Earth Ambassadors representing Earth in these talks with the Galactic Counsel and other races?

Not the best storytelling. I'll ignore the obvious flaws in the story already pointed out by others and focus on the elements that would make it better. Temporal pacing, the story lacks a sense of time, which is crucial to plot development. Are we talking minutes, hours, days, or years? The reader needs to know this for the scale of the story. Sensuality, no, this isn't about sex or anything related, but rather the senses. This story is more like a summary of events that doesn't leave the reader feeling engaged. Great storytelling engages the senses, particularly smells and sounds. Evoking these can bring a reader back to a moment in time. My recommendation would be for the author to go back and revise their work.
