As former Armored Cav and a Cold War Vet, I concur. Never piss off the humans. When I was in the Army, we didn't "play", we prepared for Armageddon. We knew who targeted us and where. A number of places I live near where we were targeted to be nuked, some no more than 10mi from my house. Armored Cav had everything, Armor, Scouts, Artillery, Medics, Engineers. Everything has been improved since I left technologically, but the people that operate it are the real weapon. Good or bad.

I'm Canadian. I haven't served myself but many of my friends have. America has a lot of toys. But our troops never stop going to school. My buddy Jeff spent 14 years in the service. In that time he became certified for multiple systems and got two degrees. Investing in our soldiers has proven successful for us ever since the second world war.

The mele weapons are not how Earth military would conduct warfare but despite that all the other aspects of this story were pretty good and discriptive.

Depends. If the first encounter with the first aliens was one where the enemy showed a doctrine to force meelee combat, we would hand out meelee weapons to our forces. Something better than the bayonet or combat knife. heck, the entrenchment tool is in many armies around the globe made to be used as a meelee weapon and some countries show their forces how to use them effectively as such. Shovel to the face by a german soldier is not just a meme. there were a lot of foldable shovels used by germans in world war one. And in space time, meelee weapons for marines would be perfect for boarding actions. with guns you have the risk to put holes into things you dont want them, like outer hulls or life support systems.

  • @dominickefrim3088

@@RicWalker melee weapons are usually only for low on ammo and close contact. I could see in the story heightening this aspect, but for close combat the military will focus on an automatic shotgun. Certainly 200 or 300 years in the future close combat will evelove past swords, gauntlets and shivs.

These formulaic war stories with badass but oh so fair humans against imperialistic and warlike aliens are not that interesting. I guess it takes more skill to write stories that create scenarios that describe aliens and humans interactions on a more personal level, not just as human fleets versus alien fleets

What is the function of these stories? There are dozens of them. Innocent / underdog humans are underestimated, attacked and/or enslaved, but then the rest of the galaxy finds out they're actually badass because they fight back; rapidly build an army and alliance, throw off the shackles and conquer everything; but after its all over, treat the vanquished fairly and rule with consent. This is basically the story we Americans tell ourselves about WW2 (somewhat acurately I'd add). Sleepy isolationist US attacked at Pearl Harbor, America builds a massive army to fight back, a few years later America and friends have conquered all enemies, but instead of ruling: The UN, The Marshall Plan, Pax Americana. Possibly a covert Pro-US and military recruiting campaign? Clever.

Stop pretending everything requires a liberal arts degree to appreciate. People are allowed to just enjoy a story for just being entertaining or catering to more primal and impulsive emotions. We are human. We like stories about humans being underestimated and coming out on top. It's not that complicated.
