Gaining respect with a huge shire horse!!

I'm worried about my huge shire horse stepping on me!!?? This young shire horse can be difficult to control! problem is her owner has recently had operations on her ankles + knee's so she cant afford to be stepped on or knocked! Steve helps her lovely owner gain more respect of space and gives her some tools to improve the relationship going forward! steve-young-horsemanship.mysh...

Loved Betty. Charlotte had done some great work. For an 18 month old horse she did learn quickly and, as usual, was loving on Steve, who so connects through horse language. And keep including your travels and chat. Thanks Tanya’s as always for your patience in doing and catching everything on video.

I dont own a horse, but if I did, I think it would have to be a Shire. Such a majestic mellow minded being. Such a pleasure to watch the horse understand what you are trying to say to them. And they get it too!

Steve & Tanya remind me ‘I’m proud to be British! I live in Australia but love following their journey. I was in a 3 Day Mountain Bike Race in 2018, Day 1 my front wheel hit a stone obscurely causing me to go head first over the handle bars resulting in me having severe brain trauma 😬, but I thank God Ian still alive, recovering all the time. Have relocated to a property with acreage so I can have my beautiful TB horse, Lola. Steve’s teaching has inspired me greatly. My life has changed dramatically with the accident but I am grateful for my life, husband and animals. Having Steve, although on the TV is such a help, and I am so grateful 👌🥰👍.

I started messing with mine when I got her , never been ridden. I'd often sit on her a few minutes, get used to it. She never minded, im under 6% of her bodyweight. One day she read me like a book and started going where I wanted to go without a halter or saddle on. They are BRIGHT and possibly the easiest horse to train to ride hand free. One day there had been work done to her enclosure. When I got on, she wouldnt go where I wanted. So I said fine, lets see. She brought me to inspect all the things one by one and then went straight to going where I wanted to go earlier. It`s an amazing breed but you need to really bond to get their full potential. I got lucky she choosed me, our trust in each other is beyond anything I ever felt.

Great video today! Growing up in western Wyoming, I always owned quarter horses. But I always admired draft horses, so I really enjoyed watching this. Charlotte has obviously worked hard with Betty, especially employing your training methods…it shows by how easily she picked up on your additional commands. She only needed a couple of clarifications with your spot on timing to understand what you were asking. She is going to be a great project for Charlotte. What a wonderful team they will be! ❤❤❤

Same, I admired the draft horses. But when I got the chance to own, I quickly found out the biggest difference in (in my case) shire was not their immense size and pretty, stout looking looks. It was their mind.

Glad to see the safety reminder re having your head above your horse's! For whatever reason, that was never pointed out to me. I now have a permanently damaged vein in my lower lip that regularly blows up with any added pressure, ie bending over to tie my shoes! I was very lucky to escape with just, to quote my riding companion at the time, the world's biggest fat lip!😳🤕😵‍💫

As a shire enthusiast, I especially like when you work with draft horses. This one being a shire is even special to me. Shires still grow into their 7th year and we should let them grow at least 5 before hard work training. The specie has been miniaturised by bad breeders breeding mares at 3 yo. But it may have helped avoid extinction. Shires are a bit more lively than most draft horses. They love understanding. I always give them ample time to decide after a command, and that made them extremely calm as well as unlikely to spook. They pause and make sense of anything new. I've never had as much fun testing the intelligence of horses than with the shire and that's where I fell in love. Once they trust you as a friend, they are nothing short of amazing.

If I may add my two cents worth...I'm 70 years old with one very arthritic knee. I still ride light horses every now and then, but most of my time with horses is spent driving them (track horses, Standardbreds). It's just physically easier. She might consider having this filly trained for driving, and enjoy her that way. Just a thought....

In an ideal world, its better to not teach horses new things between the ages of around 18 months to 2.5 years, if possible. They tend to be especially difficult around then, like teenage humans. Just continue with what has already been taught up until that point, and wait it out. With my foals, I have all the basic handling done by then (catch, lead, touch all over, flexing, yields, spooky objects, loading). I save myself a lot of trouble by not introducing new concepts until around 2.5 years, when they're often much more sensible.

It's not so bad, we get used to the size and get rewarded handsomely. I have a 17.1 grey shire and im 5`6" So she's much taller than me and I jump on just fine. What you are not factoring in, is that such a horse wont be bothered if you pull yourself on, it wont send it sideway :D. When I go through branches, I roll on her side and in we go ! Shires have been my best horse experience. A horse with the courage of a wolf

@SocialShires As I said, joking aside. I was really impressed by the Shires. I had Hannoverians, mostly around 16.2 or 3, not so wide, at a time when the idea was to breed riding horses, not specialists, and it seems that that's the way the Shire breed is being maintained -- as pleasurable riding horses. A great way to save a breed left behind by mechanized agriculture.

@@mollyLouM Yes. they look good they feel good and they always surprise you in the best way. I dont count the times where my experience told me to brace up, and the shire never had the anticipated issue. Sometimes they'll simply stop. And if you let them stop they think it through for a second and you can resume. They wont easily go for the flight response. They have somewhat desensitized me and I always have to be extra extra careful now with smaller horses.

Didn't mean to start learning from these videos, but as you've said you love reading the comments, I have to say that I can't stop watching them, they are super addictive. I've only a very tiny bit of experience around horses, including an encounter with an all black Arabian stallion, that was such a diva, but apparently with a ton of money. I love the Draft breeds, and have ridden a Cobb a few times, got to canter, but it's become so expensive that I've had to get to see how I can set up a Rescue Centre, for Horses and Donkeys, as well as breed big dogs. Going to get the membership when I can :)
