    this needs to be taught in public schools! Maybe not so specific to LUNA or DAWs at all, but I feel like understanding gain staging is something we all need to know

    Wow I really appreciate your videos. Easy to follow. If I can ask a beginner question, when you applied the oxide and la2a to the bass channel, once you send that all to the sub mix, are those effects "printed" onto the sub mix? Or if they are turned off on the first channel will they subsequently be turned off on downstream busses?

    Thanks for the great content. I made the transition from Pro Tools to Luna and I'm glad I did. Is there a way to create vocal templates for Luna? That's the only thing I'm missing art this point.

    thank u so much for this clear explanation...where I get confused is that supposedly the oxide and summing plugin automatically gain stages?? not sure I understand?? I do see faders change a bit when summing added?? Then there is the saturation knob on tape....why would studier have this in addition to input control?? Also, Im not clear on the Neve summing...I know that meter is output and trim can adjust that, but how does the saturation knob work?? I've read conflicting stories?? is counter clockwise less or more saturation? many thanks...nice to find someone that really understands this mitch

    Nice walk through thank you! Any chance you can upload a how to Re-Amp vocals thru guitar pedals I just picked up the Radial EXTC and I don’t know how to send the signal to the Radial through one of the cue mixes or sends and bring the signal back I just can’t get it to work and all KZread videos just tell you how they don’t show like you do in your videos… I would be happier than a bird with a french fry if you could do this but I understand if you’re too busy…

    Hi, your videos are great and always really helpful to me, so thanks for sharing them! I was wondering if you could point me in the direction where I might be able to understand what the OL overload button shows in Luna? I find it really difficult not to have come on at times in mixing or recording sessions?

  • @owlwoodsouth

    @owlwoodsouth

    3 жыл бұрын

    The OL button is there for you to "clear" any overloads on any tracks. If you have an overload, it means that the volume of the track is peaking beyond 0 dBFS (that's a bad thing) - a red light will pop up on the specific track as a warning. You can clear the red overload by pressing the OL button. Cheers!

    Hey! Question! When recording digitally and with a condenser microphone - as long as you aren't in the red and clipping - can that volume always be made louder without losing quality of the track? Or do you lose quality if you aren't going into yellow/orange? Hope that makes sense

    A superb and very clear tutorial. However. My question is this: if you alter on studer and out studer on all tracks it will alter every track. I’m fine with same tape on every track but is there no way to alter input/output on each studer track ? Thanks.

  • @andymacc
    @andymacc3 жыл бұрын

    Great video and instruction. Could I ask as I’m curious, so you add the Waves VU plug and gain stage the track. When you add the Oxide plug, the gain staging boosts even though you had the Waves VU set at -18db. What I’ve been doing is using the metering of Oxide and Studer to indicate, if I need to adjust any given track levels so tape meters aren’t going above +2db peaks. As I add tape to all tracks is their any real benefit of me doing the Waves VU step that you did initially? Thank you!

  • @owlwoodsouth

    @owlwoodsouth

    GREAT question! The meters on the tape extensions are Output meters. They are essentially there to show you what the signal level is coming OUT of the tape machine. It's always good to check the level BEFORE you hit the tape machine, which the machine's VU's won't tell you. The tape machines are calibrated to be a bit hotter than -18dBFS, so it's cool to hit them with more signal than you'd normally send to something that is -18dBFS. But also, the "input" knob on the tape machines is an external input leveler, so you can easily adjust signal using that knob, then view the tape's VU meter for an output level. Also, never forget that just because the manuals say you should do something one way, doesn't mean that doing it another isn't going to sound good. So, don't get TOO caught up in this stage, just be aware of the overall sound and level going to the mixbus. Cheers!

    Great tutorial on Gain Staging. I like that you can reduce level in the Studer but why not just reduce the saturation level when using Oxide which is how I approach overload using Oxide.

    Have you got some plug in that has gain compensatión?

  • @MurdaMetz

    Serious question , if a compressor is used to reduce the dynamic range , then why do you use make up gain , wouldn’t that defeat the purpose of using compression if it’s going to be the same level afterwards ?

    Aren’t you supposed to push the plug in somewhat and roll back out put of that plug in to keep it at -18 ? Not rolling back the input, wouldn’t that weaken the plugin effect that you want ?

  • @owlwoodsouth

    @owlwoodsouth

    3 жыл бұрын

    Great question. While you can certainly push the plugin for different sounds etc, it is really at the point of 'input' that you want to know what the level of signal is though. Output is there to help balance the signal coming out of it - post processing. All things are up to your creativity though. And some things just sound better being abused :)

    Not a simple VU meter just for measurement unfortunately. You can usually pick up the Waves VU meter for about $10 on sale... or the Klanghelm VUMT for around the same.
