It is a sad thing but it seems that many people have had a fire light under them recently. I see a lot more Gaelic on social media. Maybe Gaelic is making a comeback? I truly hope so. I will do whatever I can to help you folks strengthen it. 🙂 I have big plans for future videos.

Don't worry. You have a Dutch man here learning Gaelic and I intend to speak quite a bit before I visit your brèagha country. I Also have Scottish ancestors on my mother's side. Also I love languages. Problem is that most letters sound completely different than I'm used to. Could you get more into that like you did with "diotraicte" . The "a" and the "i" seem to be silent and "di" is dje and so is "te" at the end. Lol a bheil sounds like available. Connection there.

You lucky fellow! Us Yanks really struggle with it in the beginning. Although I don't have any research to point to, I'm sure that being Scottish is of some help. Call it ancestral memory or whatnot. My guess is that many place names are helpful - I ought to have studied Gaelic before my first visit, it might have saved my wife and I a lot of walking and confusion when asking for directions to castles Dunnottar and Crathes (though that last one might've only confused things more since I am pretty sure it's not Gaidhlig in origin).

I’m a good portion Scottish considering my great grandmother was full Scottish, my friends say I even have an accent at times, although I’ve lived in Indiana my entire life, I guess being part Irish too might help with the accent

I love your calm, approachable teaching style. I swear you make me feel like I’m watching Bob Ross paint haha. One day of duolingo and 24 mins of your video and I’m using sentences in Scottish Gaelic. Wow.

My grandfather doesn't know English he only speaks Gaelic I learned from a young age how to speak both Gaelic and English. Its nice to see that people are not fed misinformation about the Scottish native language. Keep up the good work

In Scotland, we say ‘grotty’ a lot which is the word in Scots for disgusting. That probably came from the Gaelic word

@@GaelicwithJason Depending on where in the States this is spoken it may come form the Scottish exodus. The Carolinas and Appalachia have strong Scottish connections but most of the States had Scots settlers at some point. But it may also be from telly programs.

Cheers, Leslie! Funny thing is, I'm a Yank. :) I think that's one reason I was hired to teach in a Scottish school years ago - to get folk questioning why they needed to import someone. I did get a fair number of free pints in the pub over those 5 years since folk wanted to hear how on earth a Yankee ended up teaching Gaelic in a high school in the Hebrides.

‘The Outlanders’ brought me here. I have so many European cultures in my lineage and I find it upsetting these languages aren’t used or celebrated more. When Scottish people speak in their own language, it’s sounds beautiful and romantic. Gives a gentle, friendly impression of the person. When they speak English, there’s definitely a starker difference.

I've been doing duolingo lessons for several weeks now and am really happy I found this channel to vary the learning style and reinforce lessons. I love how you focus on the student acquiring the language rather than learning it. I feel like not enough high schools have caught on with the "newer" trend of acquiring the language, and continue teaching out of textbooks. Thank you for your recognition! It's a treat to see folk notice that I emphasize acquisition. The educational scene is shifting, I feel. Very slowly but it's still happening. Who knows; acquisition could be the new given in 2030. I really hope so - it makes languages accessible to anyone, not just people who can memorize things well. I have Scottish roots In my family, so i want to be the first one to actually learn gaelic. My dad had tried, but then had me soon after so he stopped, and never picked it up again. I'm very proud of my orgins, and I would like to make my father proud! Thank you for helping me on this journey!

My Great Grandfather was from Glasglow, he came out to Australia and had three children. When he had been drinking he would speak in Scots Gaelic. I never met him, but would have loved to have and learn more about the lanaguage and learn it, so this is a great help. I hope to go to Scotland and learn way more about my ancestry.

I come from Glasgow and have just moved to Aberdeen for uni and have started taking Gaelic as a side course and the way you teach is so helpful and fresh !!!!

I'm Scottish and I really wanted to learn Gaelic in school but unfortunately it's only taught in the highlands and islands nowadays so us central belt folks only have international languages like French, Spanish, German and surprisingly Mandarin. Our old next door neighbours were an old couple called Donald and Narnina who are both from the Hebrides and because of their ages, they learned gaelic before they even learned english! My parents had planned for Donald to teach me, my brother and my sister gaelic but for whatever reason that never happened. Now I'm 18 and decided to pick it up alongside with my uni course, great videos mate :)

Over the past 18 months or so I've found and fell in love with the music of Julie Fowlis, travelled 9 days through and around the Scottish Highlands and decided to try my hand at learning Scottish Gaelic. Duolingo's addition of Scottish Gaelic to its catalog was my catalyst to actually start the language attempt and more digging lead me to your KZread channel, and, as it happens, just today I found your website. The past 38 days (my standing Duolingo streak) had led me to assume that familiarity would be attainable, but competency would always be just beyond my grasp. I no longer believe that to be true. Your natural language acquisition content is fantastic and I can't wait to dig in to your program! Tapedh leibh!

My great-grandmother was from scotland. I’ve always been fascinated with Scotland and it’s history and have always wanted to learn the language. This is the perfect introductory video alongside my Duolingo. Thank you.

I was born in Scotland and grew up there for 10 years so I had a Scottish pronunciation when i spoke . now 10 years later I am not in Scotland anymore but I am discovering this beautiful language and finding the words quite natural to pronounce! :) also your way of teaching is really helpful, thank you so much

KZread has suggested this video for me. I’m not Scottish. I don’t even live in an English speaking country. But I love languages and learning new things. I've been learning Scottish Gaelic for a wee bit now, so some of this was familiar to me, but watching this has been quite a different experience! Or a diofraicte experience, perhaps! I wanted to praise you on how well done this is. You are charming and engaging. Not only repeating the words, but making gestures and having the words displayed is excellent for keeping them in memory. The different colors for Gaelic and English is also a great way to help the mind keep things in order. And, to top it off, I feel like we're in the same room; you're more interactive than previous language teachers I've had that HAVE been in the room with me. You make eye contact, you pause for emphasis--I've responded with a nod a few times before remembering this is a recording. This, my friend, is excellent and I look forward to your following videos! This is brilliant. It's just a different accent and a few adjustments. I'm from Conamara, a gaeltacht in the west of Ireland and it all makes sense. Scottish is easy to read but I have to get used to how you say the words. I'd say that people from Donegal gaeltacht areas would find it even easier to understand

I have watched several videos over the past 2 years to try and learn Scottish Gaelic, but have always found it difficult to piece together certain words or phrases and combine them into a sentence. With your video, I am finding that much easier! Your video is very easy to follow, and you are a great instructor. By the end of this video, I was able to look away while you were speaking sentences and I understood what you were saying..wow!! As a Canadian, I just want to say I got a tickle from Canada being referenced in my first Scottish Gaelic lesson. This is tons of fun and I'm actually consuming and properly digesting the information. Thanks a ton, friend!

The way you teach is amazing by the end of the lesson I could understand your sentences and put some together! Am dyslexic and really struggling with language learning ( can barely speak English sometimes 😅😂) But you approach is different in an amazing way. Me and my mum are Scottish and want to learn Gaelic together to bring us closer over lockdown (I live in England and she’s in Scotland). I will definitely be using your channel! I wish I had you as a teacher in high school!

Many thanks, Charley. 🙂 I had a dyslexic pupil in my class back when I taught in a Scottish high school. She struggled in many subjects too but she was one of the most creative and engaged students I had. When we made stories as a class, she soared. I learned a lot about teaching from my time with her.

I’m Irish, We were taught Irish Gaelic growing up in school, mostly similar dialect between the two. I have always been impressed and gladdened by how the Welsh people supported a revival of and support their own beautiful language.

You're very welcome and thank you for the feedback. I'm glad they're relaxing and helpful. In my opinion, language learners should feel comfortable and settled, not stressed and anxious. If we feel threatened, our minds won't take in nearly as much Gaelic because they'll be more focused on basic survival.

Your techniques in teaching language are helping me in teaching English to my 6th grade ESL students---well, for all of my students. They are all learning to use language and vocab.

I love language and I've got basic conversational essentials down for a few languages. I've taken many college courses as well as Rosetta stone and the like under my belt. This really was more engaging and approachable than anything I've used before. Teaching really is your calling, thank you for all that you do!

How 'SNOG'! 😊 I speak Norwegian and my friend's daughter actually came out with her first complete word when I was staying with them. It was a Norwegian word! Of course my friend never forgot that 'unusual' milestone. 😄

I watched your video yesterday and today i had a dream, that i was walking on a sidewalk with you and I was repeating these words and sentances :D. Thank you so much for these videos, I love your teaching style and I cant wait to learn more !

I’m currently learning Irish Gaelic and this video just popped up in my recommended. Guess I’m learning Scottish Gaelic now too! Both sound so beautiful to me and I’m already seeing some similarities between the two so learning both will help each other. Also, I love the way you teach. We need more teachers like you in America.

Double Gaelic - not a bad thing at all! I'd like to master Gaelige one day. It was great fun to see and hear it around Dublin and to try to decode it. Thank you for your kind words on my teaching. I've worked hard to develop it and still do a lot of work to refine it. :)

@@GaelicwithJason Ulster dialect, which is what I’m learning, is the closest to Scottish Gaelic. The main difference between Ulster and the other dialects of Irish is pronunciation, and we have a few different phrases as well. The Irish around Dublin is typically Connacht. Munster dialect would be found around Galway. For example “Beag” is also “small” in Irish. In Ulster, we pronounce it exactly the same as Scottish Gaelic! In Munster and Connacht, it’s pronounced like “byug”. If you learn Ulster dialect, it will certainly help you make associations with Scottish Gaelic!

This is super good stuff! For those interested: môr sounds like the Welsh word mawr, which also means big and blasda reminds me of blasus, meaning tasty as well. Moreover, Welsh also lacks proper words for yes and no and the word order, at least from what I have seen so far, is also the same. And I think that Gaelic has mutations as well?!

I'm from Glasgow in Scotland and I have just started learning Scottish Gaelic on Duolingo, your videos are so helpful, thank you for making them. I don't know if it's a Scots thing or a Glaswegian thing but we say things are grotty meaning disgusting or horrible all the time, it's amazing seeing all the connections to Gaelic that we still use in Scots today.

I had that thought while listening to the video, that that could have been the origin of the word 'grotty'.

I’m rewatching Outlander with my mother, and since I’m fascinated with the languages I wondered how hard would it be to learn a bit of Gàidhlig, just out of curiosity, but I must admit you’re a very good teacher and now I’m totally into it ❤️🔝

I´m from Argentina. Nothing to do with Scotland except my love for their language, culture and history! I´ll continue studying Gaelic so may be I can travel someday and be able to speak and communicate in this "snog" and beautiful language! Thank you Jason!

Halò ! I'm in love with the Celtic culture and a year ago I started learning Breton (Brezhoneg), I am from France. Now I'm focused in learning Gàidhlig because I love Alba, and like many people here I am currently learning it with duolingo and to go deeper in the learning process I found out your channel. I think you're an amazing teacher ! You're channel allows me to keep contact with the language because nobody here speaks Gàidhlig. p.s : I found out some similarities between Brezhoneg and Gàidhlig, like mat and math and noz Vat, oidhche MHath. Tìoraidh !

I loved this! You just made me smile throughout the lesson :) Your style of teaching is lovely! (I've had many language teachers over the years, so I have a lot to compare to!) I started an 8-week beginners' course in Edinburgh (online) this week (also with an American teacher, funnily enough!), but based on this video I'll definitely be using your videos alongside that.

I have been learning Irish for a few years with a focus on Ulster dialect. I must say that this is mostly intelligible to me given the similarities between Ulster Irish and Scots Gaelic. Very cool.

In Australian slang, Grotty means gross. I see from some other comments it's the same in Scotland too, which is probably where we inherited it from. In any case, it makes it really easy to remember.

For me Grod is always similar to the word grotty (filthy , grubby) used often in Scots English.
