Gabriel Iglesias: On Stage Nothing Hurts
Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias (comedian) opens up about redefining himself after his long-term relationship came to an end, the therapeutic benefits he gets from sharing his struggles onstage, and the significance of his milestones in relation to his Mexican heritage. He discusses the origins of his sense of humor, being bullied as a kid, and why he chose to have a sober period. Gabriel explains how his dogs help him regulate his emotions, why he had always been reluctant to start therapy, and how therapy has taught him to be a better listener in every area of his life. He and Mayim bond over their processes for “coming down” after a performance high before geeking out over Gabriel’s incredible car collection. Mayim and Jonathan consider the importance of having positive communication tools when discussing difficult topics in any relationship.

I have a favorite story of Fluffy, my Eldest Son was a Wounded Warrior. A quadriplegic from a sniper in Iraq. But that Marine never let this stop him for living his life. The Fluffy show came to Grand Rapids MI, so My Son, his nurse and care manager went to watch him in person. Fluffy took a few moments out of his show and spoke about the military people and Thanked my Son for his service to our Country. It meant a lot to my boy. My birthday is on the 29th, it's the first without him. Sadly we lost him. But I am forever grateful for Fluffy taken just a moment of his time to uplift my Sons spirit.

Fluffy is so personable. So nice to hear your story about your son and Fluffy taking time to make it personal for him.
I love Gabriel Iglesias. He's funny without dropping the F-bomb every other word and without being grossly crude and cursing throughout his shows.
One of the few comedians that have the ability to be funny, without using profanity. I appreciate the fact that I can watch his shows, and allow my children to enjoy it with me, because I donot have to worry about cursing coming up in parts of the show.

Hey Mayim...The way you described Gabriel being on stage giving 100% and then trying to decompress to give to a family is exactly how teachers feel after a school day "on stage" (everyday) It's exhausting. Your words not only resonated with Gabriel, but with me as a teacher.

Decompression. Such ignored mental health problem’s trigger if not addressed well. And it’s not exclusive of showbiz people. Can anyone imagine the “decompression” process needed by the surgical team after a life/death multiple organs transplant? As an architect, when we (and is always a team thing) finish a big project, we’re as “high” as in meth or amphetamine consume. So after getting trash food or alcohol (carbo & sugar needed but needed in its worst form), when younger I needed a long walk alone even if it was late night, so I woke up my poor dog and did it. Today, quite older and ‘mature’, I’ve learnt to decompress watching (feeling, sensing) the outside, with some soft music and a lot of times, doing guided meditation too (never enough thankful to Insight Timer app). Thank you Fluffy, MB & JC for addressing this. Nobody does. It resonates in me a lot.
Such a wonderful person. His rise to fame included a trip to Minneapolis where he caught attention of a national audience. The gift basket is a favorite story of mine.
I got to work with Gabriel once a few years ago and he and his friends were just so friendly and welcoming I became an even bigger fan - because of course also they're all so hilarious! Thanks for having him on your show

Okay guy's all the car's mentioned are nice, but...... the best one is a 1966 Ford Convertible Mustang. I grew up with one it was the family car lol it was my mom's car.
Great interview. Gabriel is an awesome talent, but it’s really refreshing to hear a man understand what therapy does for you and that you have to show up, unlearn bad habits or old survival skills! Makes me love him even more!! Kudos Fluffy!
Omg he makes me love him more when he talks about a relationship. His mom sounds like a wonderful strong woman ❤🤍❤
Fluffy is what I call a down to earth type of person , someone that we all can relate to . Thank you Fluffy for your humor and the laughter that you bring us .
You two AND Fluffy together... HEAVEN! Thank you to all three of you for all you do and the joy and enlightenment you bring the world.
I loved this interview. Everything about it 🥰 From how the questions were asked to how everyone shared. The doggos were a cherished bonus! All guests with dogs must show them, any and all pets should be displayed, from the scaley to the fluffy. Pun intended. They’re part of our families and provide such joy and comfort.

He’s my favorite comedian! And what he says about Latina moms is so on point! I grew up with a Colombian mama; she was and still is small but so tough! You better not mess with her or her kid. 😂

I love this talk about brutal honesty. Personally, I don't trust ppl who can't just say what they mean because then it comes out in a multitude of unnecessary ways which is way more draining than simply telling the truth.
Gabriel has a down to earth, kind hearted spirit. Wish you the all the best Gabriel. I love this interview.

I love how Mayim gets surprise and excited everytime she discovers they know her or that they are fans she is so cute🥰💜
Love when the guest is a fan and doesnt mention anything until the very end of the interview. I might enjoy the Mayim & Jonathan banter more than the conversation with the guests sometimes. (Gabriel was great in this episode, but the end of the ep was the icing on the cake of a great episode)

the relationship part of this discussion is so on point. in our 50s, my bf and I have been together almost 17 years. it wasn't until we got together that I understood what a healthy, good relationship could be. I feel so validated by the therapy.
Talking about honest talk. Growing up german we are known to be straight forward and not sugar coating things. Coming to america, that was among my first culture shocks. I didn't know that people greeted each other with how are you, they didn't really wanna know how you were doing. I stood there ready to talk while they kept on walking. Why did they ask and just walked away. Some poor souls were not fast enough and they were told how i was doing 🤣

This entirely depends on where you are in America, in the Midwest especially the upper areas you will get an answer if you ask that question much of the time.
I love fluffy!!!! 💕 he is the BEST comedian! Te amo "esponjosito"!!! What a GREAT interview! I had tears... I can't wait to see you soon in Reno, NV
I love fluffy and Mayim ❤
Fluffy!!! Hes just the best. Ive seen him in concert and literally cried from happiness at being there and then happiness from his jokes. 😍
Absolutely love Fluffy, watching him makes me laugh so hard that I end up with my ribs hurting and I'm crying happy tears. There is a sign on the stage with him that simply says: "Unity through laughter" nuff said 🥰🥰🥰
It is good to laugh and talk about life.
Gabriel (Fluffy) is my favorite stand up comic. He is so natural and likeable in the way he present himself . His stories are so everyday believable and so funny. This year we lost a handful of great comedians, so I hope Fluffy stays around a very long time, we need to laugh.
I started watching the podcast last week and got obsessed watching every episode but when I saw fluffy's face I got so excited this is my favorite episode by far I also love watching Jonathan and Mayim🤯 you can tell how much they enjoy doing the podcast you guys are doing a wonderful job💗🥰 Best wishes from El Salvador🇸🇻💜

I needed a good laugh after watching this podcast. Midterm exams in my studies at college last week made me feel very stressed. Fluffy made my day with the dog that looks like a possum today. Thanks Mayim and thanks Fluffy for the laughs.
Fluffy is comfortable ☺️ He's so great 😊
I saw fluffy in Dallas tx. He was amazing 👏 best show iv ever been to!!!!
I love the what the other person hears game! We call it "The story in my head is..." It's crazy how different someone I care about can take something I said to a VERY different place and I gained a ton of perspective on how my own tone apparently does not fit my words. Lol
About the esl class situation: there's a box on every public school entry form that asks if another language is spoken in the home. If you say yes, your child is targeted for second language learner classes.
My husband bought us tickets to see fluffy in Sacramento for my 40th birthday but Covid happened and it kept being postponed. 2 years later the week of my 42nd birthday we got to go see him. It was only his 2nd show since Covid. He was the only person I was willing to go see while there were still so many cases. I wore and mask the whole time and I am so grateful for that show. It was beyond phenomenal and now Martine follows me on IG because of that show.
Best interview! I love Gabriel Iglesias exactly as mentioned in this interview he's an awesome story teller. In 2010 I was living in San Diego at the time and I went to his show. It was either after or before the show Gabriel was standing alone for a few minutes and I was standing like 50 feet away. I wanted so bad to approach him. But, I didn't want to invade his space and his moment to himself. Still to this day I regret not approaching him for the opportunity to talk with him. He's a light for sure.

I bet if you spoke with him now and told him that, he would have so much appreciation for letting him have that moment of solitude, such kind consideration of you 🙏💖
Gabriel is one of the hardest working comics. I worked with him as a DJ back in the 90's. I got a gig for the Orangewood foundation for foster kids. It was a carnival for the kids and I ask my contact that I know Gabriel (He was at nickelodeon at the time). She hired him for the day. He drove from San Jose to Orange County and meet the kids and signed head shots photos and drove back to San Jose to perform the same night. That was is a 6 hour drive from Orange County to San Jose. I loved working with him as well with other Latino comics. At times, he was never the head liner, but he stood out in the crowed. There was something about him that people can connect. I just wished that he would speak about the old comics that started his career and give them there flowers. When you become successful, give credit to people that were there from day one. Rudy Moreno, Jeff Garcia, Darren Carter.... and the list goes on. I helped his career recording his gigs on a CD recorder. He never knew I was recording him. I just wanted something for me to listen to. Till he found out and ask for a copy to send it to send it to a radio station for the funny at 5 bit. I think it was KLOS. I always supported him, from chillin, eating Tommy's burgers, and just having a one on one. He is a great guy.....
On a note last son always your favorite does not matter how old they are. They always remain your baby. Thanks for sharing
Wow, if Gabriel would've become a teacher he'd definitely be the favorite. The Uncle Phil of teachers.
Mayim I remember loving you on Beaches and on Blossom and then later on the Big Bang theory. It's funny,I'm a grown man and I have the dolls from the Blossom show, they've always been boxed but have them 😂lol. ❤️😊✌️😎
BIGGEST THANKS to both of you, Mayim & Jonathan sharing so openly your own relationship issues with us. Being both of you so vulnerable doing a thing many long term couples haven’t done in all their shared life. It lets us feel as your close friends. And yes, Jonathan, in modern HEALTHY relationships is impossible to have not difficult conversations. The “quid” is having SHARED and PREVIOUSLY AGREED tools to confront them in full honesty. And if you are raw open & honest, your relationship grows after any of those “difficult conversations”. It’s the day-by-day work needed in it (my 36-years “modern relationship” marriage experience)

What a wonderful conversation with Fluffy! He's always been one of my favorite comedians. The story teller will always resonate with me. Fluffy is lovely.
Thoroughly enjoying this podcast! I love Gabriel , he is funny, candid and honest and is a genuine person. Thanks for this interview ‼
I love that you have Gabriel as a guest. This is my favorite yet 💓
I’ve low key had a crush on Gabriel since his first special. I’m a comedy nerd and love comedians who you can tell are just naturally funny and can tell a story. Now I low key have a crush on both of his dogs. So adorable! ❤
One of my favorite interviews so far. Love Fluffy! He's a great guy and seems so approachable.
l love ❤ 😍🥰 Gabriel lglesias he's so funny 🤣 😆 he is great 👍 Love to meet him have some coffee ☕.!!!!!!
The amount of smiles, laughter, and joy that each of you have brought to the world is immeasurable. Thank you for the work that it takes to give us this incredible gift of yourselves! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love Fluffy!
I totally understand about the need to eat, after a big show. I was a singer/entertainer in local clubs when I was younger and ran karaoke shows between my singing gigs. I found I needed a ritual to actually help me come down. Having a regular routine really helped that process.
This is a great interview! The way Gabriel describes what he's looking for in future relationships is exactly how I describe it to my friends. Life is hard enough, we all have a past and hopefully, we can all heal from that. I just want to laugh with someone, have company when I travel, and to keep it real with me. Love his shows and am glad he is so down to earth. All the best to y'all in 2023!
ahaha, i am on 2nd season of Mr. IGlesias, it is really funny and worth watching, once done, i will watch all his specials in Netflix. He is gifted!, i love how good he is with mimicking or changing his voice! soooo amazing!
Omg! I think I have to meet this person.. I feel so comfortable listening to him. And life is short. Maybe we can give it a shot?
YAAAASSS!!! A guest I seriously love and a fan of for many years!
Mayim you are awesome and my favorite. And Fluffy is the absolute best Comedian in the USA who treats everyone equally and makes fun of everyone and everything. God bless you Fluffy.
I love the way this interview was conducted, so professional yet so close and friendly. I admire fluffy so much! Thank you for bringing him on the podcast ❤❤❤
great start to the day before my 12 hour shift!
I can't thank you two enough for your honest and vulnerable conversation AFTER the interview. I loved hearing you discuss your relationship, and how you approach conflict. Thank you for discussing curiosity, honesty and constructive conflict resolution. AMAZING!
I am newer here and it took me a few episodes to learn you two are in a relationship. Loved hearing your personal stuff at the end. But yes, loved hearing from fluffy. I hope he finds his person too.
That little gray chihuahua is just like my Spike! He’s a 5 lb chihuahua mix and he would be strapped to my chest 24/7 if he could be.
I loved this show! Beautiful fun kind nonviolent generous realism, humble frankness, communion, sweet doggies, domestic struggles-- the whole joyful beatific kingdom of God, right here in an imperfect, fractured rubble of a time on Earth.
Thank you so much for having Fluffy on your podcast! What a great guy, he's amazing on and off the stage. I have seen ALL of his Netflix specials so many times, I will start one, watch them all and then go back to the first one and then start over again I laugh so hard every time I watch each one. I couldn't wait until a new one of his specials come out and now there's is on from Dodgers stadium! It came out on Tuesday, it's now Thursday and I have watched it already 4 times. Fluffy has such an amazing talent, his stand up, is therapy for me. I love to laugh, and watching him, he just makes me laugh so hard it hurts my stomach. I need more laughter in my life, so all I do is watch Fluffy and I forget what is happening in my life for awhile and I just laugh. Laughter is the best medicine. Fluffy is the BEST!
This interview was amazing!!! Fluffy is definitely a comedian of the people Latino or not! So many relate to him! Mayim your words to him were executed perfectly! 💗💗💗
I saw him in Vegas right before the pandemic in a really small venue. I think it was one of the first times he announced his breakup. It was so raw and vulnerable in between the laughs and everything. It really felt like a big group just chilling and being supportive. Idk, it truly felt like an honor to be there. I always wanted a pic with him, but settled for a pic with his poster for the show lol. But even THAT line was long and I couldn't 😆😆 Anyway, what an excellent interview. Thank you!! ❤️❤️
I just wanted to add that as a story teller he is also a teacher. I think so many of his shows I have seen always have a lesson learned or a message sent.
Te amos Fluffy. Your humor is “oh yeah we’ve been there!” Sinbad used to be your kind of funny. And Miam said it: it’s so warmly familiar and allows us to react to sometimes life troubling events in our lives with laughter and it’s a relief. Muchas gracias!😮
Great episode! As a teacher i got a lightbulb when you all talked about wanting trash food after the end of a performance.

This was such a beautiful conversation!
Mayim, what you said about “ If you say what you feel, people will leave” YES! I feelthat So Much…..🥺
I LOVED THIS INTERVIEW!! The conversation about honesty in relationships is the best! I love that Mayim does not have an accent at all when she speaks Spanish, perfectly pronounced!!
Fluffffy! I saw you in San Jose this past January. Such a good show!
1:09 I have that issue too. I constantly worry that my loved ones will leave me if I tell them what I think or feel. Oddly enough, it is NOT like anyone ever HAS actually LEFT me because I said something to them, I have NO idea where it came from.
We have four rabbits here. Our doctor has them listed as emotional support animals for members of our household and they're exactly that. They may not be trained service animals, and, as a note, they should never be falsely labeled as trained service animals because that can be incredibly dangerous, however, true emotional support animals for people who have them as intended are usually just as well behaved or tend to be smaller pets that are kept in closer confines. Our bunnies are everything to us and waaaaaay smarter than people give them credit for. Since having them so many mental health burdens have been helped and stress has been reduced in caring for them and providing them a safe and loving home. I wish more small animals would be approved as emotional support animals for people because most people that need emotional support do really well with smaller animals that seem fragile and need them in order to live happy and healthy.

I was listening on spotify and had to come check here if they were talking about actual cars lol. I wonder where you store 30 cars 🤔 And if he pays insurance for all of them lol!
Loved getting to know "Fluffy". What a beautiful warm man. Never seen any of his work, but will def look it up! And thank you M & J for that very honest after- convo. Showing how you work through things, is so powerful. Not perfect, not smooth, not easy, but raw, real and healing. Creating a deeper connection, between each other and towards yourself. Responding with an open, curious mind. Not from emotions. More stoic. (I notice the feeling of.... instead of: I'm freaking pissed!). This requires a certain level of emotional intelligence, regulation and a lot of effort. Thank you for rolemodeling this to the world, in your own unique way. Much appreciated!
I love Fluffy! Thank you for sharing your mom's love and your therapy journey. Thank you for making me laugh.
I liked when Mayim said this: "A lot of times, it's when we get hurt, when a very old wound gets poked, that we go into a defensive mode. It's been a real gift to say, something got hurt in you. Whose voice are you hearing when I say 'this'?"
Oooohhh I love Fluffy! 🥰

Thank you so very much for this interview/conversation. I love Fluffy's stories. I always wanted to define to myself how/why. Mayim and Jonathan did this for me. I so appreciate all involved in this episode. Thanks. 💖💝

It’s true! I did it, I Googled “Fluffy” and Gabriel Iglesias pops up 1st 🤩 He’s #1 in more ways than one 🥰 ALSO, really appreciate you TWO. I was getting educated on healthy conversation “how tos” ~ Thank You 🤗
Quick history note to Jonathan and anyone too young to know: the first standup comedian “rock star” to sell out venues like stadiums and Madison Square Garden was Steve Martin, in the mid-to-late 1970s. We fans knew all his bits, we’d say them to each other - like “I’ve got happy feet!” and “Well excuuuuse me!” He was so popular that he quit doing standup to do movies, write plays, play banjo for real, and such, because he got tired of touring and wanted to do other things. But he was the first. With all due respect to Mr. Iglesias.
