This is by far my preferred version of the magnificent Faure Requiem. The choir is superb, including the marvelous soloists, bass Thomas Allen and this terrific young treble, Dominic Harvey, who has such a pure voice and excellent delivery. The sensitive commentary by the late Sir John Gielgud and the visual blocking of the choristers and general impact of this entire 1980 performance are exceptional.

Almost defies words! This relatively short work is packed with so much exquisitely beautiful music, almost beyond belief! The young treble, Dominic Harvey, is outstanding both with his clarity of words and notes, and his breath control is excellent. The Mozart remains my favourite, possibly because it was one of the set works for my O-level music in 1954! This runs it a very close second and this is a very fine performance by one of our leading cathedral choirs and musicians.

Per Faure's notes, it is meant to be sung dramatically with emotion. People should weep. This version does it very well. Adding the Offertory was part of Faure's pure enjoyment. Note the depth of the baritone's opening of the supernatural to the ethereal swirl of the amen. Sir John's translation is heartfelt. Brilliant.

Sang this on tour with SF Boys Chorus at the 2005 world expo and around asia. I always feel like I'm right back there when I hear this requiem. Harry Potter 4 had just come out and all the choristers were glued to their books for the duration of the tour :P

A beautiful video. Sir John Gielgud, the great baritone Thomas Allen early in his career, great choir and orchestra, great location--what more do you want? Well, there is one noticeable imperfection. (WARNING--don't read further if all you want to read are positive comments.) Imperfection? A *glaring* error! (at least to those who know the music.) At 43:56 the sopranos are supposed to come in! And the rest of the choir 3 beats later! Where the heck are they? You finally hear the choir kind of fading in at 44:07! It sounds like they just forgot to sing until then! If so, why didn't they just do another take? Not enough time/money, I suppose. It's possible the choir did just miss the entry. An alternate explanation, but also hard to believe, is that the sound engineer accidentally dialed down the chorus microphones, and finally restored the levels. [edit: corrected error as noted by Ian Sutton in a reply]

Sorry. Your comment re. the 'glaring error' don't make a lot of sense. One hears the choir at 44:07, though the audio is quite low, and at 44:56 the work ends. Please clarify your complaint.

Why would it really matter? It's sung in Catholic churches, but Winchester is Church of England. (I don't think there are Protestant requiems.) In any case, I'm sure Faure couldn't care less. I'm an atheist (so was John Gielgud, but great actor that he was, delivers the commentary with great respect). This is a deeply moving work and performance, no matter what one's religious views are or aren't.

This is an RC Requiem with RC myths and legends. The main and most wonderful Protestant Requiem is Brahms ‘A German Requiem’ with all words from the abundance of teachings straight from the Bible, unlike the RC Requiems of Faure, Mozart and others - tho their music is sublime of course.

Re-read my comment inserting the wry irony in which it was meant. It is startling how far down the drain we have come as a country when my comment can actually be taken at face value. No, not the slightest need to have puffy lipped blacks in the choir and no need to have someone like Lucy Worsley introducing the thing instead of Gielgud. It would make the whole thing unwatchable.
