Gabby's Battle: Sleeping on the Sidewalk Homeless in Miami

In this deeply moving interview, Gabby, a homeless woman in Miami, opens up about the harsh realities of living on the streets. Gabby's story is not the typical narrative many assume about homelessness, but it reveals a truth that many overlook: homelessness can happen to anyone. Originally from Atlanta, Gabby sought a fresh start in Miami after the devastating loss of both her parents. Despite her best efforts to rebuild her life, she found herself homeless, sleeping on the sidewalk in the only place she feels safe - near the Miami Police Department.
Gabby recounts the daily struggles she endures, from avoiding the prevalent drug use around her to the constant threat of violence. As a woman, she faces unique challenges, making her choice of a well-lit and busy area crucial for her safety. Her story is a stark reminder of the vulnerability and danger that homeless individuals face, especially women.
Her journey is not just about survival but also about maintaining dignity and hope. Gabby shares how she lost her job and subsequently her home, which spiraled her into homelessness. She found temporary employment at a fast-food restaurant, where her hard work was recognized, but the pay was not enough to secure stable housing. The difficulty of finding affordable housing in Miami, despite working long hours, highlights the broader issue of the affordable housing crisis.
Gabby's story is filled with poignant moments, such as the loss of all her belongings, including her work uniform, and the kindness of her HR manager who helped her replace it. She talks about the disappointment and frustration of trying to find shelter in places like Camillus House, only to be turned away due to limited space for women. The shelter's rules and procedures, while well-intentioned, often made it impossible for her to continue working and maintain her spot.
Throughout the interview, Gabby remains incredibly resilient and hopeful. She speaks about the importance of staying in good spirits and how her faith helps her cope with the daily hardships. Her three wishes reflect her deep desire for systemic change: for shelters to have enough space for everyone, for housing programs to prioritize individuals with clean records and genuine needs, and for people to support each other rather than turn to destructive behaviors.
Gabby's story is a powerful call to action. It underscores the urgent need for affordable housing and better support systems for those experiencing homelessness. Her experience shows that homelessness can happen to anyone and emphasizes the importance of stopping to ask and listen to the stories of those we pass by every day. By sharing her journey, Gabby hopes to shed light on the struggles faced by many and inspire others to advocate for meaningful change. Watch this interview to gain a deeper understanding of the human side of homelessness and why we must act now to ensure that everyone has a safe and secure place to call home.

This woman is exactly the kind of person that should be prioritized for housing. She's clean and sober, she's employable, and the streets haven't broken her yet. They need to get her off the streets before that changes.

    >They need to get her off the streets Who they? Surely it is clear by now that the state does not care about people who find themselves in difficult life situations. Solving the housing crisis requires serious reforms that politicians have neither the will nor the desire to do.

I will do my best to not sound judgmental as there are thing I don’t know here- but here are my observations so far: 1) Left Atlanta with no plan & only a little money (I understand, needed a change of environ. But I’d return home if I had a place there that I could work/afford to live. Why stay where there’s nothing for u but the streets if you were never homeless before?). She could always work restaurant/ food industry here (ATL) where she’d have an opportunity for tips & affordable living (some low income aptmnts are still below $1k here). Miami is like 3x as expensive as it is here. & there is decent outreach here. I know someone who changed their life around with the help of outreach & them landing a job while homeless. 2) How did the lashes & nails get done with no income? Just curious. 3) If she is who she portrays herself to be (pretty normal, hardworking, very well-spoken, people seem to take to her at work), why can’t anyone in Miami or back in GA come get her & help her out for a few months until she’s back on her feet? (This is a tough one, but most normal working people have at least 1-2 family or friends that will help them get back on their feet from such devastation however they can). Local churches can also easily help a person like her. She didn’t make much in food services, so coworkers there would be hard-pressed; but she doesn’t know anyone at all? Cousins, aunts/uncles, etc? That’s wild. Or is it pride in not wanting to ask for help from people who know her?🤔 4) [MOST important]Spiritual observations: nose rings (bull ring especially), rosaries around risk- many will fight me on this; but these are all associated with witchcraft & Catholicism, which is often mixed with witchcraft, especially in Caribbean-dominated places (including Miami). Even the lashes can come from those same realms (not saying they’re all craft items specifically; but most women are wearing them & there’s a reason for that “trend”). Sometimes we’re doing stuff as trends or think we’re connecting with God, not realizing (due to lack of understanding of spiritual warfare & of God’s actual word), we’re often participating in things that taint our lives with ties to the enemy, opening doors to our despair. God warned us of this multiple times throughout the Bible. Be aware of your clothes, jewelry, exercises (YES, Yoga!), friend circles, movies/tv shows, music, etc. Satan’s imprint is on MOST things in this world, so it’s extremely hard to avoid him altogether. But we must do our best by understanding what/who he is & is his vs God’s, making sure we’re worshipping the REAL God of the Bible (not the many false gods He warns us not to worship), & not worshipping idols/items (mother Mary, who was a person, rosary beads & cross fixtures/items, candles & figurines, etc). We can acknowledge without worshiping or carrying these things around. Worship ONLY Him- He makes that abundantly clear in His word. 5) If the guy or someone there just helped her with a phone if possible, she could setup a Cash App & we could see if she’d take what she is gifted with & make something shake. We gotta fight until the end when we’re down bad, & keep God at the center, thanking Him for life, safety, & an opportunity to try again each day. 🙏🏽 Just my 5 cents for today. 😊Be safe & be blessed everyone❤

Yep, I completely relate! The first time I was houseless, fresh off the greyhound I spent most the night journeying through the center of a big metro city's downtown area. The things that I witnessed and people that were hanging around was like living in a live action cartoon, I just knew I couldn't crash there and feel comfortable or safe so I got outta there. I lucked up and found a spot just a few blocks up the street, a more quieter, laid back and secure neighborhood which is where I would camp for the next several months. I would become a bastard neighbor so to speak, always cleaning up my trash, offering a helping hand, stayed to myself, never bothered anyone and carried myself a certain way where it would earn the respect of the neighborhood residents and even the security guards. I already know she's going to be alright.

Hopefully, great things await this authentic and luminous soul. Her communication skills and persona are highly marketable. I believe Ms. Gabby is ideally suited to serve in a social-work capacity. She would be very personable and relatable. Such a career could help her achieve a decent living while assisting others living in similar situations. I really enjoyed this video. It serves as a reminder to withhold judging those whose stories are unknown or greatly differ from our own. Gabby, I wish you the very best in pursuing your desired endeavors.

Gabby didn't ask for anything specifically for herself when asked about 3 wishes. May Hod bless and reward her for that alone. Also, she lost both mom and dad. So she is basically in a world by herself, yet she is trying to hold her head. Smart, intelligent, articulate young lady. May God bless hand keep her safe always. ❤🙏🙏

I was homeless from 1984- 2012...give or take a few years not consecutive in a apartment. I kept the faith, and it was still difficult...it was like going through the rabbit hole to find strength and I was able to become sober in 1995. My advice is to trust that the great DIVINE have a plan for your life and, ask the DIVINE to guide you while you're in the wilderness. Remember this analogy that it took 40 yrs to enter the promise land. In short learn to be even more patient! All things in divine timing! BELIEVE IT !!!

How I wish to be there and talk with her, could listen to her for hours, sometimes these videos are too short! But I also wish to give a helping hand, just there are too many in need of help. Here in the Netherlands there's homelessness too but so little compared to the states, and more options for people to have a roof over their heads, food and support. For a land of "big dreams and opportunities" you should do better, America. Talking to the big shots/politicians, not the people struggling to survive.
