OMG THIS!! I have gone into wanting to do the adult paint by numbers, to learning that funky instrument, to gardening, to SO many other things but my depression gets bad to actually follow through. I end up being too tired after work to do anything, plus dealing with SAD. It's not matter of being easy, it's a matter of my brain and body overrides my want to even read a book. I wish it was so easy to just "fix depression" Holy hell.

This is true. Depression unarguably can make you begin to lose interests in once enjoyed hobbies. With the being said, I don't know if she was coming from a good place. I also know that sometimes with depression, you have to push yourself a little bit. You have to push yourself to get outside and get some sun, to get out and take a walk or hit the gym, etc. And it sounds like those ppl were actually making excuses tho. Lol. Like, get a damn hobby that fits your financial needs as well as any other needs you have. There's a ton of new things to try out there in the world. I actually think Gabbie's message was overall meant to be positive and she's been picked apart.

If it’s temporary that’s fine, I have personally felt like that once because i had an empowering experience and felt good about myself that I could make a change in people’s lives, and then it faded because I realized I had to put in work to accomplish that. But anyways, my point is, is that it boosted my confidence and helped me realize others can achieve that state and realize their self-worth as well. So I learned about myself and my self-worth and realized I have the power to make changes, and made me learn about how others can do that too. It was a positive experience, and I realized that eventually it was too much. The issue is when it becomes to a point where people feel attached and needy to that position of power to feel self-important. I don’t think that’s the case with Gabbie though, I think she’s just going through those natural stages of personal development and is learning about herself. I don’t think she is getting stuck in those power-hungry positions My point is it’s totally natural to experience those things, it’s only if you stay stuck there that it becomes detrimental to your self

Manic episodes can be a lot of fun, not only for the person oneself, also for the people being with them. You just have to absolutely be aware of the fact that it is nothing else - like being with a coke-boosted or MDMA-driven girl. They can be very good to You, almost like a full-blown nympho (as long as she does not wander off too far) - You just have to make absolutely sure to keep her as far as possible from Your real life.

The thing about her singing, is that she isn't totally untalented. She has potential, lots of room to grow for sure, but she believes she's already at her peak and needs no further improvement, so when people criticize her for that very reason she just believes it's hate, although she does get a lot of it, she CANNOT distinguish that and constructive criticism.

I’m diagnosed with bipolar depression and I disagree. They give you a sense of accomplishment first and foremost, and that is the secret to contentment, if not happiness. A sense of accomplishment, something to look forward to, something to work towards. Even if that means saving every penny and minute of free time to be able to have one, that’s working towards something. It’s the secret sauce. I am not ~cured~, but I do have all of ^ those things sometimes. It makes a difference. The hardest part is discovering a hobby that interests you, though. And I know that’s even harder when you’re depressed. But don’t give up, anyone who’s reading this. It’s possible to find a slice of happiness. If anyone needs suggestions, let me know. I hoard hobbies now, for the above mentioned reasons. Lmao.

The other thing about this is that people don’t realize depression is such an encompassing word. You can have zero hobbies and be super depressed, you can also be a doctor, be part of a million clubs, do community activities, have friends who are constantly loving on you and inviting you out, have a side business that’s based on your passion and dreams, AND STILL be depressed. Depression doesn’t have a specific face or routine or situation, no one is immune to it, and I’d go as far as to say that most of us experience it to some degree. I hate that she’s got such a big platform and spreading such dangerous lies.

Even tho i love it and want to open my studio some day. Thats just that. Also in other times depression wasnt as recognized as it is now. And when it started to be recognized the psychologists werent taken seriously. Besides just compare other times and ours. In USA teens have to go get a loan for college even if they work while studying. They will pay that loan off for major of their adulthood. While their parents and grandparents could pay off college by working part time jobs and after that buy a hause. Its not as easy as that

I used to love to draw and write. I literally wanted to draw a comic and write a book alongside it. But I don’t care about it anymore. Why? Because I work full time and would rather sleep when I get off. Or do something that literally requires zero effort, like scrolling thru tiktok and watching a KZread video. Imagine trying to focus on a book or painting or even care about it anymore. Depression drains your everything. There's no joy, even in things that you love. This blithering child needs to grow up and stop trying to spread misinformation and guilt to people who already hurt and feel like they aren't enough. Don't listen to her. If you have depression and can't find your way out, you ARE NOT ALONE! Talk to someone, anyone. Get help. Everyone needs a little push now and again. And sometimes we need a full on hand up. You're not alone and you can get through this. You are stronger than you think and to someone out there, you are everything. You are enough, and you are exactly as you are meant to be right now. Growth and learning comes with time and mistakes. If you are in a bad place now, you are learning. This too shall pass. You have got this. I have enough faith in you for both of us. 🥰 Hang in there. I think it's the way she phrases her advice that's really the problem; if all she had said was, "Hey, having multiple non-monetized hobbies has really helped me with my depression, so it might help you too!", I would be pretty weirded out if people were getting pissed over it. But the way she talked about it like this was some huge, mental illness-curing revelation that will work for everyone is the issue. Unless you're a therapist talking to your client, any mental illness "life hacks" should always be delivered as a tip or a suggestion, not as a "miracle cure" that's one-size-fits-all. For example, I just figured out my own "hack" to remembering to take my medication every day: I got a brightly colored, large pill organizer and keep it on the pillow next to me so that it's the first thing I see when I wake up, and whenever it's time to refill, I sit down and do it slowly and methodically. All of this has allowed me to be able to take my depression and ADHD meds regularly for the first time in my life, and they're finally doing their job. But if I said, "getting a rainbow pill organizer will cure your depression", that would be kinda shitty, right? Anyway, it's kinda sad to see someone who wants to offer well-meaning advice phrase it in the worst, most insensitive possible way, because I doubt that was her intent.

Giving advice or tips on helping depression in general on the internet is always a huge no-no. No matter what you say, how useful it is, how effective it is, etc there will always be a group of people who can't apply it to their life's due to their own circumstances. I worked in the mental health field pre-covid & it's best to stay away from it unless you have 1-on-1 communication with someone. Otherwise you're *going* to upset people. It's touchy

psych facts: it still isn’t proven that chemical imbalances are the cause of depression and we think that for the majority of people that’s not the case. this does not take away from the fact that depression can be chronic and debilitating, but it doesn’t have to be a chemical imbalance for that! :)

chemical inbalance theory is at best partly “true” - it is not the whole picture and there is no hard consistent evidence that ties receptor insensitivity or neurotransmitter inbalance to mental illness. blaming depression on some underlying brain disorder is reductionist and quite frankly simplistic.

Even assuming you had unlimited time or funds, depression can make you not want to do hobbies you enjoy. I know this was said in the video but I feel like it needs to be addressed more. You could have 1,000 hobbies you usually love and just avoid all of them because you're too sad to move or do anything. I've personally started a number of hobbies, went through a bout of depression where I didn't do said hobbies, and just never picked them up again after that.

honestly I'm glad her hobbies have helped her get through tough times but depression is different for everyone. Anyone who has been through depression knows how much it affects your ability to keep yourself motivated. Heck I don't even have the motivation to physically get myself out of bed on some days. It has affected my personal hygiene and lifestyle, so how exactly am I supposed to motivate myself to get a hobby. Besides depression also really affects your self concept..even if I like something and I WANT to try it out, I feel like I won't succeed or that I'm not good enough, so I have to pass. And scrolling on tiktok isn't the same as getting a hobby.. I scroll mindlessly and it takes zero effort or energy to do that, the latter however, will require me to get out of bed and pour energy into LEARNING something new. It's way too fucking exhausting, someone needs to shut her up tbh

  • @zee7133

I think the biggest point that she is missing is how depression affects people. when you are really in the depths of depression you can't get out of bed somedays. Doing the bare minimun to survive is hard enough. you can't just go and do the things that you love to do, that's not what depression allows. I have so many things I love to do but when I'm really f****** depressed I don't have any motivation or to do anything even if I love it.

One of my friends looked at me in envy because depression caused her to mostly be in bed and rarely leave the house not even to go out in the garden as she felt safe indoors only, whilst I could go to work and my appearance was neat and tidy. What she didn't know is because my job is caring for others that was the only time I had when my thoughts were silent. The train ride home would be screams inside my head. My appearance was neat and tidy because my uniform covered my scars and without a job, I wouldn't be able to financially take care of my ill father. I fell apart as soon as I got home. Depression affects people differently, Gabbie is too self centred to understand that

I've been a very busy person from a very young age. Nowadays I'm a law student, I sing, I read, I'm bilingual, I draw, I practice archery and karate. And I still go through depressive episodes. I know I'm privileged bc I have the resources to practice my hobbies. However I'm not rich, I still don't have my own bow, and I don't have the necessary materials to practice certain styles of art I want to try. I'm also neurodivergent, and it's really hard to keep up with FUCKING LAW SCHOOL, ONE OF THE MOST DEMANDING CAREER PATHS, and still practice my hobbies as a person with actual ADHD (not the weird breed Gabbie allegedly has that makes her call people c*nts). I haven't drawn an elaborate piece in 2 years, I had to drop my singing lessons, and I miss many karate and archery classes because of my classes and midterms. I'm also a massive perfectionist and I beat myself up for the smallest mistakes especially when it comes to my hobbies. None of that helps with my mental health at all. So no Gabbie, picking up more hobbies won't cure my depression. F*ck you.
