G37+370Z Easy Throttle Body Dirt Check using an App: Motorvate’s DIY Garage Ep.29

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this episode of Motorvate’s DIY garage, we are going to show you how to use any OBD app and a cheap scanner to see how dirty your throttle body is. No need to open the hood, or to get your hands dirty!
PLUS we explain when you should clean your throttle body, based on data - not opinion.
This episode is the result of almost 3 years of data collection using OBD Fusion's fantastic Diagnostic Report. This report allowed me to see the slow changes that occurred over years.
This episode is targeted to the 3.7 litre v6 in Nissan and Infiniti cars. BUT the process described will work on any car.

    This is absolutely(pun intended) fascinating and is great information. Thank you so much for doing this, and the other subjects you've covered. I have a 2019 370Z sport 6MT that's hitting 60K miles and I've begun to see performance issues that suggested to me that I needed to give my throttle bodies a good manual cleaning. Your clearly presented and highly informative videos are extremely helpful. Since I plan to remove the throttle bodies for their cleaning, I'm planning on replacing the spark plugs too. As an aside, I was curious if there might be a way to gauge the degradation of the catalytic converters over time and how that might be increasing the exhaust back pressure.

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    3 ай бұрын

    Thanks for your kind words! You can check the condition of the catalytic converters. Use a cheap ELM327 and a good OBD app (like OBDFusion) to read the "mode $06" data. Look for "$21Catalyst Monitor Bank 1" and "$22Catalyst Monitor Bank 2", then under "TID $80" (Test ID) it will show a number and a min / max range. These values are the "O2 storage index" The higher the better condition of the car. My mostly stock (Stillen Cat back) 2011 G37 has values of 35 / 27. Once this value gets below the minimum (10 on my car) the ECU will set a a P0420/P0430 catalyst efficiency below threshold. In the future in plan on doing a short episode to cover this and a few other hidden gems in the mode $06 data.

What did this one run you if you dont mind me asking? Because just the couple screens you showed displayed everything I'd ever need to know. Also do you have a video showing all the functions of the obd scanner? You give very good descriptions so id really be interested to watch a video on it. 👍 Thats so nice that you can now sit in your car on your phine and do a complete diagnostic scan.

    Hey Wuagy370z, I think you will really like my other channel "OBD4Everyone" (kzread.info) It covers different OBD apps and explains all the engine sensors (Mode $01 PIDs) on the 3.7 VHR. The app I used for this episode is "OBD Fusion", costs about $15, and is worth every penny. It is my favorite OBD app and the diagnostic report is very useful to understand what is going on with the engine. For an additional $15 you can purchase the "Enhanced diagnostics" which gives you access to about 300 MORE PIDs and allows you to scan all modules on the car's network like ABS, Air bag (SRS) , body control module (BCM) just to name a few. Welcome to the awesome world of on board diagnostics!!!

    Hey Jonathan Dinh, Yes it would... but your car won't pass visual inspection during an emission test. So I guess you can spend $200+ on a catch can or clean the throttle bodies every 60,000 miles.

PLUS how to build your own, inexpensive oil pressure gauge so a leaking galley gasket doesn't get your engine -AND- a 30 second install, no wiring, easy install engine oil temperature gauge that can also display the automatic transmission fluid temperature. I have been testing the gauges on my car for the last 3 months, and they are working perfectly. With VVEL doesn't the intake valve control how much air goes into the engine?

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey sk8punk318, Yes it does, but the throttle bodies and VVEL work together. For example, when at idle, the throttle bodies are mostly closed (idle position). This provides the required vacuum for the power brakes. When driving, anytime you lift off the throttle, the throttle bodies almost fully close. I am planning on a future episode to explain how VVEL actually works. It is slightly different than what the NIssan video shows.

    My 07 G35 sedan only has 21 pid's on that list so I can't get to the relative throttle position (pid 45 on your list)🤦‍♂️ this would have been so nice to know. I assumed with the dual throttle bodies that both cars share the list would have been the same.

    I understand your point. That's weird... The absolute throttle position is shown on the 2008 G35. I guess Nissan/Infiniti added it for 08. It would be great to be able to verify the supported PIDs for every every/model but I don't have the resources to do that :(

    This is probably off topic but my g37 will stall after starting but no codes, in the cold it starts completely fine, friends told me it could be a fuel pump or starter but I doubt it, never cleaned throttle body, I connected my obd2 while the engine warms up and idles around 600-700 and said throttle position was at 4-5%. I hope it’s just dirty throttle bodies giving me the issue. It’s currently at 99.3k miles bought it with 97k miles at the Infiniti dealer but the car is well maintained.

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey DGFr0sty, It is my experience when the G37 starts and quickly dies, it's a dirty throttle body. To test this, just press down on the gas pedal a little and try to start the car. If it starts up like it should, it's a dirty throttle body. If you are wondering why it starts fine when cold, the engine control unit will open the throttle a little MORE to help the engine start when cold. If you want to do this yourself, follow these steps: kzread.info/dash/bejne/q4d_m5uPkrbPhKg.html Then YOU MUST follow these steps: kzread.info/dash/bejne/en2dw6hphsS6nLQ.html Good Luck!

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey DGFr0sty, Yes, the oil gallery gaskets have been a problem on the VQ37VHR. Several G37 forums mentioned that Nissan switched to a metal gasket in 2013 which fixed the problem. Should you worry? I don't think so... BUT I would look into putting in a small oil pressure gauge to keep on top of the potential issue. In a future episode I will be showing you how to build an inexpensive oil pressure gauge using an Arduino and a nice small OLED display. The hardware prototype is done and the software is 90% done.

    Do not clean your MAF unless you want to change it not long after you clean it, as MAF Cleaner removes the coating over the resistors of the MAF, especially if you use too much cleanerand you will just end up replacing it anyway. It's best to just replace them. Cleaning MAFs aren't worth the headache down the road.
