Future Sound Of London - Papua New Guinea - dawless hardware only cover/recreation
Музыка
A few commenters were asking for some FSOL - happy to oblige, though Warner Music Group and Beggars have interfered a bit due to copyright complaints.
Sooo.. not 100% correct, and I've done a sort of shorted version for the final track, but it gets you in the right ball-park for the original track would have been created. There's a great Sound on Sound article, talking to the guys about this track, which has been the basis for most of this video, along with other interviews and (of course) WhoSampled -
SoS article can be found here ➡ www.soundonsound.com/techniqu... Samples, samples and more samples.
They also mention using an old Atari 1040, which would have no doubt been a lot easier to use than the MC50 and a notepad to keep track of where you are in the sequence. DAWless jams be damned.
Please consider liking/subscribing etc, and do drop a comment below ⬇
Thanks for watching!

FSOL were quite the sampling geniuses in their day. Accelerator is one of my all time favourite albums that I've rinsed to death over the years and had no idea how sample heavy it was until i watched a breakdown video on it. What a broad choice of samples too. I feel blessed to have had the 90s as my glory years.

I'm in a band with Jack from Meat Beat Manifesto and he told me that the Radio Babylon bassline was done with a piece of toast hanging out of his mouth. He had just made some toast but was struck by inspiration so picked up the bass and recorded it straight away, food be damned. Awesome video again. I love FSOL more than I can say and this track is an absolute stonking masterpiece. So many good memories of hearing it blasting on huge sound systems while raving til dawn. (and beyond) You did an admirable job of de/reconstructing it. Makes you appreciate the original even more.

This took me back, and is really quite impressive. I had an R-8 for a few years. I'm sure it was a great piece of kit - I just don't have an ounce of rhythmn programming skill in my being, so it was basically an expensive paperweight. I sold the R-8 and bought another drum machine (although I can't remember what it was called, or who manufactured it). Evetually, I stopped buying hardware drum machines. Far less expensive to fail upwards with software.

The back/top of the Nord has a slight angle inwards so you get a small amount of clearance above the unit. I'm still using angled jacks for the outputs, but the midi cables and power jack fit in fine 👍

there are a couple styles of electronic music coming out of png and west papua eg. wisisi. of course the focus is generally protest of the silenced 60+ year genocide (est. 1.8 million) for the world's biggest goldmine (u.s. operated). i can't help but think about how long it's been since this track dropped and how long nobody has had the slightest awareness of the fate of the world's third largest rainforest. the engineering on that ought to be real impressive huh.

🙌 I watched some documentaries about PNG whilst making this, mainly to see if there was anything that might have been sampled, but the main takeaway was just how brutal the native population was treated by the (British/Australian) early prospectors in the rush for gold.
