So Novikova became Prima after 19 years of dancing and that it took so long, is widely considered a scandal. I don't think Fateyev wants to look ridiculous again. The other Primas go as follows: Visneva very soon after graduation( don't know exactly), Kondaurova after 11 years, Tereskina and Somova after 5, Skorik after 8. Based on the above, notwithstanding their abilities, the following are unlikely to be named: Osmolkina 23 years of dancing, Yevseyeva 21, Kollegova 22, Matvienko 21, Shirinkina 16. The next two still have a chance: Batoyeva 13 and Shapran 11. The rest dance 7 years or less. Fateyev does not seem to be in a hurry to name Primas in general. 6 years passed between naming Skorik and Novikova. So it is possible that a second soloist or lower will be named. I think Shakirova and Khoreva are the frontrunners.

Thank you SO much for taking the time to give us this most interesting information. Considering how many years have been allowed to pass without promoting the older and most deserving ballerinas to principal level, the choice is narrowed down to the younger ones. I am, I suppose, a wishful thinker that would love to see the mature ballerinas, Osmolkina, Kolegova and Yevseyeva promoted, even if their careers as principals might be relatively short. All three of them deserved to be principals long ago and they have what the upcoming younger ones are often said to lack, namely, personal interpretation and charismatic stage personalities.

I have to say I really like the younger generation of Mariinsky soloists. Shakirova is fantastic in everything, already dancing a huge repertoire, and has so much personality on top of her technique especially in roles like Rubies. She should definitely be promoted sooner rather than later. Illiushkina I have also been admiring much recently she has many special qualities on top of her superb technique (her Swan Lake in particular is a beautiful interpretation) , but she was very recently promoted to First Soloist and probably has some time before any more promotions. Nagahisa instantly stands out in this grouping, but in a way that can only contribute to the Mariinsky. Her lines and poses are exquisitely shaped, and she dances with a distinct lightness. I think she really brings something new and valuable to the Mariinsky. While I love the younger generation, many of the older dancers fully deserve a promotion for their long careers at the Mariinsky, like Batoeva who has some of my favorite facial expressions I have ever seen on stage.

@Ева Харитонова I've seen the mentioned ballerinas (actually, all in this video) and I can't say I agree with you on Maria Khoreva, all the times I've seen her she was lovely and also artistic, especially in La Bayadére when she performed Nikiya. Nagahisa I've seen a few times, not so good, a bit... flat, her Giselle was very good though, mostly in Act II. Iliushkina dances like a prima already. Maria Bulanova as well (second soloist only) is like a prima, but given bad roles for her talent.

I believe Khoreva will be a principal before long, and with good reason. She keeps getting better and stronger, she is working smart. She also has a slight edge in her physique and lines that is just genetics, like Sylvie and Sveta - who people criticized/criticize for similar things to Khoreva. Tons of dancers have social media but Maria makes more people stop and watch because she just has that “it factor.” JMO. I really would like to see her in Romeo and Juliet. I also think she will be good as O/O.

While Khoreva is great, I think she has more maturing to do. I feel like thanks to her online popularity, she’s been rushed and has debuted a lot of principal roles which many have been subpar in my opinion (mainly in interpretation). She’ll definitely become principal in the future, but I don’t think it’ll benefit her to be promoted right now.

If she didn’t have her amazing, very professional IG account and her endless KZread videos she wouldn’t be so highly rated. That extraordinary fame has given her an edge - her fame and recognition makes her a huge box office draw, for sure. She has the most beautiful ballerina body with her pretty face - great proportions. Her technique is text book perfect. But she has weaknesses. She’s not great at turns. She’s a bit stiff with her upper body. Her “emotions” need a lot of development. Giselle and Swan Lake - maybe when she’s matured. She’s terrific in Paquita or Nutcracker. I was not fond of her Aurora - especially the vision scene. I remember very young Osipova and Zakharova …two very different artists and they had a joy in their dancing.

I agree! She is such an amazing dancer, her technique in general is outstanding but she indeed needs to mature and grow in her roles to make her interpretation more real and complete. Although it is true she got some more recognition thanks to her online presence, I think she would have gotten where she is now even without it (maybe slightly later). This video is really great!

I was waiting for this and you did not disappoint! Thank you BunduBallerina for an amazing compilation. I had never seen Batoeva at this variation, wow! My comments regarding next promotion: -- Not now, not in the future: Matvienko, Shapran, Yevseyeva, Shirinkina. -- Not now, maybe in the future: Nagahisa, Iliushkina. Based on artistic director's preferences, Nagahisa is definitely a future promotion. -- Not now, DEFINITELY in the future: Khoreva. Again based on artistic director's preferences, she could as well be the next in line. But that would be unfair if someone was to be promoted now. -- Not now, YESTERDAY: Kolegova, Osmolkina. I don't see them being promoted so late in their career like it happened with Novikova. Novikova had been dancing a lot before her promotion. -- NOW: Batoeva, Shakirova. In this order. They deserve it the most at this point. Maybe Batoeva more considering seniority (but not only).

I'm not extremely familiar with some of these dancers, so this is judging just based on these videos and variations, which may not be completely fair. Based on Talisman, Osmolkina looks like she's already a principal: technique, style, stage presence are all there. Batoeva is a close second, and I've seen RB dancers not do that punishing variation better. I'm impressed with anyone trained in Russia who can do Ashton! Nagahisa has all the parts and just needs some seasoning. I love both Shakirova and Shirinkina. Khoreva is getting there but, depending on the role, still has some stagecraft to learn. Stage presence is something you're born with---what I think others are referring to as "heart" or "shine"---and if you don't have it naturally, you have to develop your craft to compensate, and that's not just a matter of technique. If you can find the RB Sleeping Beauty with Cojacaru as Aurora and Nunez as the Lilac Fairy, you have absolutely no doubt Nunez is a principal even though that's more of a soloist role. Whatever that defining quality is---carriage, style, sense of presentation---it transcends technique. This was another fun compilation with a neat range of variations. Thx for compiling and posting. Final thought---if they have 2 openings, can they steal Kaptsova and Alexandrova away from contract work with the Bolshoi lols?

Ah, yes, now that we have finally gotten what we wanted and Novikova bas been promoted into her rightful place as a prima, and now, Batoeva has been promoted, as very very well deserved, we may now focus on who will be next! Shakirova is so lovely! I hope she is next so much poise and what a joy to watch on stage! What a charisma on stage and with the flexibility, musicality, and technique to bak it up as well. She is a star! Speaking of stars, I am certain that Khoreva will be promoted, also, to principal soon, but not before she performs Romeo and Juliet (I think she would make a lovely Juliet) and/or Odette/Odile. She has been a soloist now for 5 years, so perhaps in her 6th or 7th year she will be promoted. Yet, I am hoping Shakirova will be promoted first. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore Masha, but I think Shakirova is more deserving and in her repetoire is Juliet. We shall keep a lookout for Shakirova's name for the upcoming performances of Swan Lake. I also think that May Nagahisa will be a principal in time. For anyone else, I am not sure. I think Ilyushkina may be a principal one day.

  • @elyselight

Renata Shakirova definitely is a future prima. Her Kitri is just the best. Her expressions, acting and pirouettes are superb. Watching her I realized ballet really needs artistic sense more than anything.. much more important than techniques. After all ballet is an art, not a sport program. This leads me to think that Maria Khoreva is a very skillful dancer but lacks quite a lot in artistic sense. She seems to be a nice person and always trying to develop herself. Hope she stays humble in all her fame and keep up her acting. As for now I think she is behind Shakirova. And Maria Bulanova(second soloist) she is also very young but has more artistic sense than Khoreva for sure. Her Zarema is really good. She has talent in dramatic acting. Though she is a second soloist I think she has quite a potential to become a prima in the future.

All of them are excellent dancers, but Khoreva has that special plus that makes a prima. Not only is she technically wonderful, with stunning lines, but also her musicality is remarkable, probably her mastery of piano has something to do with it. Besides, her progression is meteoric and the depth and variety of her interpretive registers get better by the day. If she continues to evolve like this, she will certainly deserve to be a Principal.

However, I will say that the Marinsky Theatre continues to present the most stunning show case costumes for their ballerinas and cast that I have ever seen of most ballet companies in the last 8 years. And of course, the orchestra is the soul of the house that credits history of how great music launched this mysterious art form, ballet. Brava to all the ballerinas. 🌹💜

A thank you is due to the Mariinsky director, Fateyev, for having promoted that most artistic ballerina, Novikova, to principal relatively recently. That was such an applauded promotion! And now, I would love to see him do the same for the mature and artistically more original ballerinas, Osmolkina, Kolegova and Yevseyeva. Sadly, it has been stated that Kolegova may already have retired! Who cares if their principal level years are to be shorter, they are the seasoned & most artistically deserving ones right now.

is there a secret factory somewhere in Russia where they produce ballerinas by pack of 6 ? maybe it is called Vaganova ? Anyway, they are all absolutely perfect technically like they are coming from the same mold... there are all very young also, and it is difficult to find one really different from the others ...; I prefer Shakirova but we will have to wait to see their artistic personalities shining with the different roles !

It's amazing to me that only one or two people have even mentioned Elena Evseeva. Although I understand that it is not going to happen, as she has only a year or two left probably, that doesn't mean it shouldn't! Not many months ago it didn't seem possible that Olesya would get her due. But if it can happen for her then I wish it could for Elena too. IMHO she is most definitely the next most deserving after Olesya, both for her ability as a dancer and for her wonderful stage presence and personality, both of which she's has far more of than any of the others here, not to mention than some of the current principles. Her Kitri is, for me, just about the best thing I've seen in ballet and if she doesn't have quite the breadth of principle roles that some others have, that's hardly her fault. I'm sure she can do them all and, I believe she did indeed dance some others at the Mihailovsky. I sometimes wonder if her decision to go there after graduation has been held against her at the Mariinsky. I have never commented on a YT video before but felt I had to speak up here. As I said, I know it won't happen, but IMO Elena deserves more recognition at least. Elena for presid.....er....principle!!! Go Elena!!! ✊😘

I think most likely, in no particular order- Batoeva, Iliushkina, Osmolkina, Matvienko, Shapran. Why those 5? Well, there has to be versatility, maturity, popularity, and a certain magnetism or personality. Plus, the big one- you have to dance, or have to have danced O/O. And maybe even more so Nikiya. Batoeva is incredibly versatile, in her physical peak, can dance allegro or lyrically, and has great acting skills. But she must be allowed to dance as Nikiya. Iliushkina might seem surprising, but her lyricism in O/O make her a favorite at Mariinsky. Osmolkina, even as an older ballerina, can still portray the loveliest Shyrin. But she has never danced Nikiya and the clock is ticking. Matvienko has the maturity, technique, experience and vast repertoire that should get her promoted. Shapran just has that "look" of elegance. Not sure her technique is the strongest, but I did notice that she portrayed both Shyrin/Mekhmene Banu and just has the look of a prima ballerina.

I'll try to put them in an order, even though it's difficult. I'll just say my opinion, please don't be rude if you disagree. Osmolkina: That woman can dance everything, PERIODT. Promote her now! She is even better than some of the current principals. Khoreva: The most gifted and hyped dancer currently, even though she needs to improve her acting skills. I think that she will get promoted in the next two years. Batoeva: She has the best acting skills compared to all the female dancers in the company. She surely deserves a promotion, but I'm not sure if it is going to happen soon. Shakirova: Her technique, her energy, her acting skills, almost make me cry, although there are some things to improve. Her promotion is something sure but not now, she still needs to built her repertoire. Matvienko: Beautiful technique, experienced, with a big repertoire. I think that there is a possibility for her too. Iliushkina: She has incredible lines, and doesn't lack depth while performing, even though she is not as experienced as other dancers. She will surely get promoted, but it's not the right time yet, she just became a first soloist. Sharpan: A lovely artist with very correct technique but not as noticeable as others. I think that she doesn't have many possibilities but we'll see in the future. Yevseyeva: My thoughts are about the same as for Sharpan, even though they are very different dancers. She is also 39 years old, probably about to retire. Nagahisa: Although she has lovely qualities, I think that she doesn't even deserves her current rank (not even the principal one). She is only good for soloist roles and only a few principal ones, I don't think that she would convince me in more serious principal roles. Shirinkina: Very nice dancer but not very active and she rarely dances principal roles at this time. I think that she has the least possibilities. I'm not adding Kolegova because I think she retired, even though she is still on the website.

There is no question Osmolkina deserves to be promoted, she's a brilliant, technically perfect dancer. For God's sake... what else does the woman need to do for that company? Needless to say, the company under Fataev seems stuck with a lot of dancers they don't know how to employ and they're just... rotting on the vine. IMO, some of their current principals are less than inspiring, not doing much and maybe it's time to... clear house.

It's a Russian ballet! Which of the young ballerinas dances Odette - Odile in "Swan Lake", she will be a prima ballerina in the near future. Individual successes are not enough, the future prima needs to be able to withstand Odette-Odile in "Swan Lake" completely, and so that tomorrow everyone will only talk about it.
