Ойындар

Furries can be very frugal with their purchasing of furry art and commissions of all kinds! Today we went over The Story Of The $20,000 Furry Commission by Izzzyzzz and talked about the drama involving the closed species community and how it applies to the rest of the furry fandom!

I've never questioned Izzzyzzz's knowledge on the internet subcultures and whatnot since I've binged watched different videos of many different creators over 10 years. If youtube recommended it to me, I watched it. I can't play, draw or do anything without background noise so that would explain it. I don't consider myself a furry but because of youtube I know sooo much about it among other things. Video essay channels have become my favorite in the last year, long videos about very specific topics!

"Sick of waiting" sounds like it had been a while. For $20k that art should have been top priority, the fact that it apparently had not been started until they made threats of legal action sounds sketchy on the artist's side. I wasn't part of the situation though so I'm of course missing the whole story.

This whole auction and the ensuing drama was fake. First, shill bidding is a common practice: want to make something seem more valuable or in-demand than it really is? Just rig an auction (the sellers are usually in on these). Second, if the buyer really wanted their money back, the LAST thing they would want is the art (just think about it).

It's 60-75 on the artist and 40 25 of the better for no clean communication through FT or mention of substance in their bloodstream. if the artists saw what the manic spending spree looked like or how his med put him through I feel like the artists should put it on hold for some time while keeping 2nd and 3rd close by just in case it fails or the buyer pulls out for whatever reason I'm shit at explaining things but I hope you understand where I'm coming through

I'm gonna be honest, both sides handled it poorly The commisioner couldn't really do much because of their episode, but they could have tried to keep themselves off the internet or something. The species owner could have finished the design before people started bidding, or refunded the original commisioner and sold the design to someone else

That's not how manic psychosis works, unfortunately. Especially for the first time it hits, most people don't have a plan in place or informed friends/family ready to help them, which is kind of the point of why it's so scary. I would still partially just say, yeah, that's what happens when you get sick. That's the danger. If you blow your money, you can't just say "it wasn't my fault" and it will all magically come back. If you threaten or scare your friends, ruin relationships, you can't just say "I was insane at the time" and bring things back to how they were. If you don't sleep for 3 days and sustain yourself on energy drinks, saying "I didn't know what was happening to me" doesn't undo the heart attack that just put you in the hospital. But the difference here is that this was a one-on-one interaction; they didn't buy a bunch of hobby equipment or antique art from a bunch of different stores. The artist should have clearly seen this as unusual behavior. I would refuse to accept 20x the worth of something I'm selling to an individual regardless of the situation, though I recognized the mania loaded in the bidding comments as soon as they were shown. That's just too much money to keep if there's any reason at all it may have been given in error, definite "my mother would have been ashamed of me for taking it" levels of money.

the point of a “custom” design is that it is specifically designed based on the commissioner's specific parameters/theme/tastes etc. if the design was already made before being sold that’s just an ordinary adopt which wouldn’t have been nearly as expensive since the best part is telling the artist exactly what you want and how to do it. the situation really could’ve been handled better as a whole though.

I hate the idea of closed species so much that i spitefully draw them myself, and if there are any rules, I break as many as I can. I just fundamentally oppose someone trying to artificially enforce some kind of authority on a passion which is meant to be as free as possible. the Tyrant-Artist is the worst sort of hypocrisy. It is doubly bad that these people often know there is zero legal or moral recourse for their authoritarian grip, and often utilize their communities to oblately harass and attack people for stepping a single toe out of line. Even a small thing such as a minor change to a character you purchased can lead to vicious cyber-bullying.

  • @BloomInTune
    @BloomInTune Жыл бұрын

Communication would've saved a whole lot of issues throughout the drama, and means so much even if it's not as expensive of a commission. I commissioned a piece (sort of a small scene) back in March from an artist, and was aware that they had regular stuff to take care of as well as other art, since I had commissioned them in the past. It's nearing the final stages now, but they've been so good about keeping me updated on the progress of the piece, whether it's in direct messages or their twitter posts. It's a stark contrast from a separate artist I bought a YCH spot in October, and while they've had life stuff happen too, they never even replied to direct messages; only replying to a question of mine on one of their tweets offering refunds to people they hadn't fulfilled commissions for (whether in full or in part). Seemed like from others that they may have kept taking on more than they could handle since it was still income, and I'd probably feel sour if that YCH actually happened, but I would prefer the service be rendered than left on the table.

as someone who has owned a few closed species characters in the past (nothing as notorious as grems but still decently active/popular) the access to the community is definitely the best part of it. often closed species groups have daily events where you all draw each others characters based on different themes, make stories, roleplay, have game nights, etc. sometimes there’s even exclusive discord servers just dedicated to closed species. it is a really fun thing to be a part of and the concept is great however it’s extremely prone to toxicity/corruption due to its “pay to win” nature and people worshipping the creators like gods lmao.

As far as the "communities", these species have been around for at least 10 years or so. Ultimately it boils down to diet-furry, there's roleplay opportunities, contests within them, mostly people just drawing with, for each other just like furries but based around a more specific creature. They can be like other artists - get to know someone, enjoy them as a person. Or they can have the same surface level interactions as furries, where someone goes "uwu cute art!" the artist goes "thanks" and that's the only interaction that a $500 character design has brought. I guess that's most similar to a fur getting a super expensive fursuit, you can use that as leverage to be seen and then interact with more people, or you can stand around like a doll. Not that I care how someone uses their fursuit, their character, etc... but that's just kinda how that is.

Yeah, I would never spend over a few hundred for digital art since it can easily be copy and pasted by someone in a country like Vietnam and use it as their own character. Digital art theft is extremely easy to pull off since different countries might have their own different platforms where you'll never find out it happened until it's too late Also, as an auctioneer, I'm not 100% sure about other places in the world, but I'm pretty sure in the US there isn't a limit on how high someone is allowed to bid as long as the buyer can pay -Ace

I am a furry that started in closed species, drama is very common and not everyone in there is a furry but it’s a common overlap. There is *usually* at least one suspiciously wealthy person. Closed species is definitely similar to furry- you own the design so it’s like an OC/fursona but more exclusive and with more rules lmao I was a designer, the appeal of that is just doing adopts on a base. I was getting some too- I barely bought any (was in a lot that had free raffles and being a designer I’d occasionally do design trades with other designers) but it’s fun to buy- if you really boil it down it’s just like buying an adopt from your favorite furry artist.

So I used to be sort of into the adoptables community back in the mid-2000s. You're right in that it is kinda like furry, but instead of people taking the characters and acting as them, they're usually used as OCs in group roleplay scenarios. The Lands of Evelon is a perfect example. It's an old message board I used to half live on. It has a bunch of creatures that you can "adopt" and use in several different subforums representing locations within the lore of the site. It's a fun time that used to be extremely popular.

I’d argue the fault leans heavily in the artist’s side. Like yeah, threatening legal action was a huge dick move, but that only came AFTER the artist refused to partially refund Caravan despite telling them about the manic episode. And it’s not like the manic episode was subtle. For starters, the huge ammount of money they dropped when the bidding for that species typically stays in the $1,000-$2,000 range. Secondly, the fact that this wasn’t the only insane money drop with the same artist. And thirdly, the other artist clearly knew Caravan’s activity was suspicious and banned them from their own closed species auction, the original artist should have realized straight away that something was up, especially since Caravan’s bidding and purchase history was a hot topic. And the cherry on top was banning Caravan from participating in the grem community. Not only was their manic episode taken advantage of, the artist was petty and threw in a last-minute “screw you” on top of that.

I run a closed species thats practically rollercoaster dragons, as of writing this our user community is just under 100 people and the highest ive ever sold an adopt was maybe 60 dollars (to me it feels like a lot) and for us its practically just furry but more niche. We talk about coaster news and theme parks and draw eachothers characters and I like to worldbuild with my species, hoping to add some scenery to my portfolio. I enjoy some closed species but its all based on how much i like drawing them, lore and attention put into the species but even if i happen to stumble upon a popular one i dont really care for but i like the character enough ill just get them for the character. Ill admit much of the community is about status which kinda sucks, i wish i could come up with ocs from the species without an myo ticket (which i personally think myo tickets are silly in concept but its not the end of the world) but i can manage

One thing it got me thinking about is that the artist might've not wanted to give a partial refund because they were scared that it could catch on. Commission something, demand partial refund. And if it's denied it'll go into "But what about this person? They got one, why don't I?" Plus the other bidder might've been pissed, cause they were willing to spend 20k and then someone else out-bids them and then negotiates the price back down. Don't get me wrong, 10k is still a lot, but I think it's more or less the principle they saw in danger. Cause as soon as you start giving in, there will always be people trying to exploit that. Especially when you're a freelance artist. Do you really have the time and money to go to court over this? A lot of people build on that mentality, which is honestly pretty sad. I'm not trying to point fingers btw, just trying to wrap my head around some of the reasoning.

I am a furry artist. Not that big or well known. So I be rather cheap. Average price someone spends on me is about $75. To some that still sounds like alot, but that still lower than minimal wage considering the hours I put into it. So an artist does not always make bank doing art. Now I never done an auction before. So never had something like a mentally troubled person lead up to drama like this. But I have certain rules I follow that prevents drama. I don't start work until the money comes in. Once the money is in, I jump on it around that day. I make some sketches and then send them to the buyer. This is to show, yes I am working on it, they don't have to wonder for months where their money went, and I get their opinions to make changes as I go. I send updates. Something many artists just don't seem to do. This rule alone could have prevented the drama this artist had with the buyer. However If the impulse buy really put the buyer in a bad spot and they really did not mean to do it. I cancel it for them, and bring up the next highest bidder. Because with the bidding it be stated if the highest bidder falls apart, it goes down to the next person. Kinda like how any computation when a winner gets disqualified.

13:35 I know some are going to be livid. Go ahead. It's funny to me bc I'm a psychopath. Go ahead & mald, ya seething bottom of a dramafur. ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ As far as those who agreed with Delo at this point, I respect you COMPLETELY. I also agree with Delo on just letting the bids go wild bc it's fucken bread 💵💷💴💶💸🫰🪙🤑💳💱💰🏦🧧🈶🈹🏧💹. But I also would allow it to go wild bc it goes to show how much they love furry art. They'll sac the bread due to unwaivering devotion & that passion is 💯% the most beautiful form of FanBean geekification. Fight me if you think I'm wrong. I'm absolutely sure I will have a few supporters of this viewpoint, at least.

I'm totally with the GREM team here. I feel sorry for Caravan but it wasn't the GTeam's fault that Caravan was on meds and was having a mental breakdown. If they allowed the refund, it would hurt the integrity of future auctions; it invites flaky bidders who will jack up the price knowing they can just appeal to GTeam's sympathy. Serious bidders will also be punished as they either pay more than what was necessary or lose to someone who doesn't want the product as much as they do. You can't just contact the 2nd highest bidder either because they're not obligated to work with you. They could have already used up the money, decided they don't want it, whatever. Lastly, since there's no way out, Caravan should have kept a level head and gave the GTeam ample time to finish the design. Again, the situation sucks, but because of their impatience and lack of emotional control, they now lost $20k+ for an unfinished, cluttered piece. It could have at least been great if he gave them more time. For comparison, game splash arts are around $3k - $5k (granted the auction is more like a doing a ref sheet but that's the quality I expect). Depending on how fast artists works, some can finish within a week, some in a month or two. I still wonder what happened to Caravan. I wonder how they got the money to pay for it. Are they ok now or are they still paying for this mistake?
