I so badly hope you read this!! I'm a single mom with 4 children, it was such a bad week and to top it off the furnace wouldn't get hot!! I checked the door, watched the light blink, then watched YOUR VIDEO and cleaned a possibly clog port (and yes gently blew into the little hose to check the switch without damaging the diaphragm) and SUCCESS!!!! I'll be honest I she'd a couple proud tears. Thank you thank you thank you. Not only did I solve the issue, you taught me so much about my furnace and that's invaluable.

thats awesome and yes. this dude is awesome....always always check youtube on videos first before calling a tech (watch multiple videos on same subject to get the best understanding of it)...you can at least rule some stuff out or confirm certian things are cracked, broken etc...

I want to thank you so very much! 2 days ago we spent nearly $400.00 for a company to come out and replace a $20.00 transformer. Guess what the heater stopped working today. I truly want to thank you for being unselfish and helping me and others right now in need because of the virus and inconsistent work. You, Sir, are THE MAN! I checked the exhaust and could see no obstructions. I checked the wires to the pressure switch and they were connected solidly. I pulled the hose from the pressure switch port and gently blew (no effect) and then sucked on the hose and heard a "click". My next move was to unravel a paperclip, wipe it thoroughly, and insert it into the pressure switch port. I felt some resistance in some areas so I ran it in a number of times focussing on the sides of the tube. I reconnected the hose and 2 minutes later the blower came on and I saw (for the first time in a day) a flame and then the burner lit! AMAZING. They wanted $185 to come last night - I told them I'd wait until Monday and pay $65 (and I have a service agreement! ). The house is warming up again and I'm cancelling the service call. THANK YOU! You are truly THE MAN!

This video has been among the most valuable I've encountered in my many years of surfing "KZread University." I have a Bryant furnace and it's been shutting down during a cold snap. I was getting the 3-1 code (pressure switch) and was just about to go out and buy a new one. I figured that had to be the problem, but watched this video just for the heck of it. Sure enough, I pulled one of the hoses to the trap and about 1/2 gallon of water came out of it. Thanks for the tip of having a bucket nearby! I would never have thought there was that much water in that hose. I pulled the trap out and sure enough, it was really clogged! One input hole in particular was very clogged and would allow water through it, so I used a small snake made for unclogging evaporative cooler lines and gently ran it through that hole. That finally got the water flowing and black sludge kept coming out. It took about 20 minutes in the sink to get the water clear and for it to flow freely out of all the holes. Just to deep clean it, I have the trap soaking in vinegar as I type this. I'll give it a final flush and reinstall. Thank you very much for this video!

You are the best! Thank you for taking your time to educate the rest of us in such a clear manner. I am a 66-year-old widow and was able to clear a plugged pressure switch port. I had to try clearing it twice, but then it fired up. I found a small nail was able to break through the clog better than a wire. Thanks again.

I have worked on the technical side of the automotive business my whole life. The competency level in that field varies dramatically. I have seen the same in many other trades. After watching a couple of your videos, I would conclude that you are among the top in your field. My Carrier furnace was flashing code 31, related to the pressure switch. My root cause was not one of the one's you or anyone else covered. Of the videos I watched, only yours provided the detailed design and function information that allowed me to fault trace a piece of equipment that I am not familiar with. I had 28 volts going to the pressure switch. When the unit powered up and the fan came on, I then had 28V on the switch output. I initially though that the switch closed due to excessive pressure. Armed with the knowledge I got from one of your other videos, I could conclude that the switch was ok and the pressure that the switch was monitoring was ok. That left the possibilities of the 28V signal not reaching the circuit board or a faulty circuit board. I followed the orange wire from the pressure switch and used the wiring diagram attached to the unit. It turns out my unit has an optional device called "auxiliary limit switch, overtemp, - manual reset". I had 28V going in and no voltage coming out. There was a small yellow button on it. I pressed it, it reset, and I my problem is resolved. I think it is great that you and others take the time to post informative videos to help others solve their issues and save a lot of money. Jay - thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I had searched and realized I was dealing with a code 31 on my Carrier Weathermaker 9200. Once I knew where to focus my attention, I continued to search and found your video. Once I viewed it, I was almost certain it would be a clogged P trap. It was very clogged. It is now cleared out and everything is working as it should. You saved us a lot of money, since we didn't need someone to come out and address the issue. We're renovating a house we completely gutted and are in the process of putting back together, so saving what would likely have been at least $300 for a service call is greatly appreciated. Your videos are straightforward, concise, and you have the perfect voice and demeanor. Keep doing what you're doing!

Thanks so much for your clear advice! I have a Lennox G26Q4/5-100-6 with PVC pipe intake and exhaust lines. I was getting the pressure switch error code (right LED slow flashing), but only intermittently. That is, my furnace would try to start several times and then it would finally start. I learned (maybe a year ago) that I could get it to start reliably if I stuck my vacuum hose on the end of the exhaust line (increasing the exhaust airflow). If I ever noticed the house actually cold (which was actually rare, since it would usually eventually start up -- in fact we didn't even know that it was trying and failing), then I would go look at the furnace, see the pressure switch failure code, run out and put the vacuum hose in the exhaust, and it would start up. Did that for a year or two, actually. But following your advice I just went through your troubleshooting steps and finally found that the intake line was partially blocked right where it entered the furnace. There was a huge moth, some beetles, some leaves, some pine needles, etc. sitting on top of the grate that is at the point where the air intake attaches to the furnace. I detached the intake line, cleaned off the grate and the burner area, and it's working great. Thanks so much!! (p.s., I wonder why the air intake doesn't have a grate right at the end that is outside of the house. I think I'll add one.)

I have watched a bunch of your videos , they are amazing . You have a natural gift for explaining things . I have just cleaned my burners taking especial care with the thin flame channel and the flame sensor . My furnace is different I had to remove the burner box ( the burners were held in place by screws ) . I replaced the single pressure sensor some time ago . It had failed ( the furnace is about 9 years old ) . I was naughty , I somehow managed to bypass the pressure switch for a couple of days only during the day , until a new sensor arrived . It was midwinter in Canada . I also have a component that I haven't heard you mention so far . There is a "J" tube that the condensate runs through before going to the drain . Having seen this video I am thinking of removing the inducer motor and checking the condition of those fins . A great big thank you for magically making complex things simple .

At 11:30 on a Saturday night in December it stopped working and was able to get it running again! Thank you so much!

You sir are great! It's -18 degrees Celsius (0.4 degrees Fahrenheit) outside. Our house was down to 12 degree's celsius (53.6 Fahrenheit) inside. The furnace guy had been out once last week and cleaned inside the furnace and that seemed to help, but then this morning we got up to this coldness. I watched your video, walked outside, and stuck my finger in the intake tube for the furnace (high efficiency). There was a build up of snow inside, that had blocked the input tube and this was immediately dislodged with my finger. Instantly the furnace out port put out a little burst of moisture, and the furnace has been running fine and brought the temperature up by 4 degrees already in about 15 minutes. Thank you!

It's the first time getting cold this season - after hours and I was losing my mind trying to figure out what was wrong with my furnace. Your videos are a total blessing. Thank you!

You have the gift of explaining complex matters extremely well! I have a Bryant two-stage furnace, about 10 years old. It's been giving the 4:3 pressure switch code intermittently since last spring. I went though the troubles of replacing the control board, and later the pressure switch itself. None worked. This weekend the overnight lows are going to be in the 20s so I must have consistent heating. Before I bite the bullet and call the plumber, I decided to do one more KZread search on the issue.... Boy oh boy! It was the pugged condensate trap! You even pointed out the brands of furnaces that are prone to the problem. Bryant is one of them. Thanks so much and cheers!

What a great tutorial! I new from the code that the pressure switch was stuck open but had no idea what it looked like. I followed his advice and now my furnace is working again.

My buyers home inspector found that the furnace wasn't operating when there was a call for heat. A pressure switch error was coming up. This video saved me hundreds by figuring out the issue myself. Turned out there was a tennis ball stuck in the exhaust line, restricting the venting. Thank you!!

I have a high efficiency furnace and my issue was with a plugged condensate trap. It was very much clogged with water spilling out so I removed the hoses and flushed out the ports and boom everything was fixed! Jay, you are awesome my man! My Carrier Infinity 48XL-A worked flawlessly for nearly 10 years. Then, the heat would not turn on. Your knowledge, troubleshooting expertise, and excellent presentations gave me the confidence to attempt to make a repair on my own. After reviewing many of your videos, I narrowed the problem down to a bad inducer motor or a defective pressure switch which would not close. The solution was unclogging the pressure switch port....a very simple fix...if you know what you're doing. The port was filled with a hard, white substance that looked similar to dried mineral deposits. As you recommended, I used a wire with moderate-level pushing to punch through the substance. The fix was SUCCESSFUL! Thank you!

I first tested the pressure switch as you instructed, it passed. Your videos are awesome. We came home from vacation to freezing temp and a furnace/heat pump that wouldn't start. I ran through your top 10, error codes indicated low pressure sensor. Found a little rock in the line, didn't work. Replaced the sensor, didn't work. Then saw the segment about cleaning the port with a paper clip... It was stuffed full of debris. I used a Dremel bit at first by hand and found it so bad I used the Dremel itself. Life saver! I couldn't get anybody out here, add if I did I probably would have been charged a huge boatload. This video is 100% responsible for my resulting troubleshoot & fix of my furnace. Condensate drain line was clogged, causing water to backup into the secondary exchanger/inducer chamber, which blocked the necessary suction needed to close my pressure switch. 👍 I owe you a case of beer, my man!

I hope you see this! I live in South Central Kentucky and we had a snowstorm yesterday (we usually never get much snow ever!). My heat went out today in my house. I was using my gas fireplace to help keep the house warm. It’s 15 degrees outside (62 degrees in my house) and I searched KZread and came across your video. I followed along your video, pausing and checking things as you went down your list. I was getting the pressure switch error. It ended up being that the port from the pressure switch where the tube attaches was clogged. But, I also think the intake vent might be clogged as well. Going to double check that tomorrow. As for now, the temp in my house is rising. Thank you so much for doing this video!!! It saved me a lot of money and made me smarter about my own unit.

I can’t thank you enough for this video. I replaced just about every part in my fiancé’s 23 year old Amana/Goodman 90% heater, but it still wasn’t working and the cause was a pressure switch- which I had already replaced. I replaced the induction motor a couple of days ago and I tested the system. It ran for 37 minutes and 28 seconds then cut out. The blink coach indicated the pressure switch - - i.e one of the ones I had just replaced. I was about to call a repair person when I watched your video. After I saw the part about the condensation, I said I’ll give it one more try. I pulled One end of the hose hose off the pressure switch and pointed it down outside the heater. About an ounce of water came out. I pulled the hose off, blew it out with Canned air let it sit for a while on the sun to dry it out. I reinstall the hose, crossed my fingers, and fired the unit up. And it did fire up and is running perfectly. The thermostat was satisfied in the unit shut down, but I am running the circulation fan only for about six or seven hours to make sure that all condensate is out of the unit. Thank you so much for your brilliant video.

I've been troubleshooting many other things both for work and at home my whole life and immediately knew that this was going to be extremely helpful. You covered a lot of ground in a very short time. I was not disappointed! For me the pressure switch would not release until I removed the tube on the condensate side. I'm pretty sure I'm going to find that it's time to replace my 30 year old furnace. The good news is that I was able to get the heat running for now, the inside temperature was getting pretty low. I need to poke around some more to see what I can find but I'm pretty sure I will need to call in the professional's for a total replacement. Unfortunately, from experience I know that it will be best to checkup on the work they do, they all are not as good as you are. For instance while troubleshooting this problem I found that the C terminal screw for the common bus side of the 24Volt transformer was at least a turn and a half loose. Not sure how it has worked for so long. Thanks Much

Jay, thank you for the accurate and useful information to understand and help repair a furnace issue. This Sunday morning, I noticed our 12 year old High Efficiency Carier furnace making a running sound. Our thermostat showed 66 (set at 68). The main furnace blower was not running. I removed the furnace panel and didn't see flashing error indicators. However, I didn't get down on the floor to look into the little observation hole. So, I started looking at the many hoses and connections and discovered the condensate drain hose, severely bent. I can't believe it was built this way, but maybe through the years the strength of the hose weakened and could no longer support the sharp radius bend. I went out to my local auto parts store and bought a foot of rubber hose to replace the old one. Thanks for the tip about cleaning the condensate trap. I removed mine and used an old drain cleaning snake (like a large pipe cleaner, that worked great). There was not a way to attach the photo of the hose and cleaning snake, so I added that as my picture for reference. Thanks again from a past TV repair guy (with BSEE) Gene

Thanks for making this. Informative, simple and straight to the point. We watched about a dozen videos before finding yours and it led us straight to the problem, and we were able to fix it ourselves - I wonderful relief since the soonest repair service was booked out for four days and we have a cold snap going on right now (always the way it goes, right?). This really saved our buns, not to mention made my husband feel pretty macho for fixing it “himself” ;) myself and his ego thank you!

I have an old system that has no codes. There was a crazy wind storm last night with 60+ mph gusts of wind and my furnace would make noise but not heat. After watching the sequence video and this video, I tried blowing into the pressure switch hose while it was connected to the blower motor. It was plugged. As mentioned in the video, i poked it with a wire and there you go. This video just saved me a bunch of money and time. Fixed my system with my multimeter, a scrap piece of wire, and most importantly the experience shared by the person who made this video. I sent a donation via paypal to say thank you.

Fantastic video. So well explained, well done. Helped me diagnose a pressure switch hose that had cracked because it was too short and was stressed because of bend that was too extreme where it was connected. $3 part and it's fixed. Thank you so much!!

Coming to express my appreciation for the video as well. Last night the furnace stopped working and I don’t have the money to pay to have it fixed so I started googling. Figured out what the error code was and then found your video. A plastic bag had flew up on one of the exterior pipes last night. I wouldn’t have even thought to check the pipes.

Thank you many times over. Our gas furnace was not coming on. I watched several of your videos on how furnaces operate and how to troubleshoot and narrow down issues. I then went straight to looking for an error code on the controller board; then watched this video once I got to the pressure sensor switch open code. After probing for proper voltages, I blew into the pressure sensor hose going into the fan/motor housing, and it was completely stopped up - no air movement. Ran a wire through the port, plugged the hose back in, and the furnace was back to working. Your hands on demonstrations and practical tips - like shorting out R and W to call for the heater to turn on - are very helpful.

I truly appreciate your work here and the valuable info you give. Thanks to you I was just able to rule out a number of problems and get my furnace back up and running in minutes instead of having to wait until a furnace tech could come look at it. I appreciate the time and money you saved me, keep up the great work!

Thanks Jay. This was a great educational video. For me it was the inducer motor not wanting to start, it was humming and maybe having 1 revolution in 20 seconds. Took off the motor, spun it by hand and blew it clean with compressed air. It started up immediately when plugged in. Reassembled everything and the furnace works great again. Great and cheap fix when it is -29°C outside. Calgary Alberta, Canada

I woke up to a non-working furnace this morning and just watched your video. The rubber hose attached to the pressure switch was loose .. presto it fired right up! Thanks from chilly Wisconsin!

Hey, thanks so much for this very informative video. Just like the previous post, it was Xmas eve and the furnace was not keeping the house warm. (“The night before Xmas & all thru the house-everyone was cold, including my spouse”). The worst timing-all the fam home, contemplating the jacked-up service call on the holiday, not being able to get a replacement part until after the holiday, etc. etc.-the ruminating had begun. I checked the service code-“High-Heat Pressure Switch or Relay did not close or reopened.” I have a Bryant and tried the troubleshooting step of cleaning the condenser trap. Ba da bing ba da boom-how lucky did I get. I began squeezed the tubing to see if there was any backed-up water and the water began gushing out into the trap and then out to the pump. I didn’t want to get my hopes up, but was thinking that this just may be the problem & solution. I disconnected the condenser trap, cleaned it out as instructed, reconnected everything, fired up the furnace, and let there be heat. No more service code, I am several hundred dollars richer, and everyone is happy! You are a life-saver my friend. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

You are a lifesaver! It’s 23 degrees out and 3 am on a Saturday and my furnace just went out. The error was saying pressure switch closed so I blew on the tubes and gently tapped the pressure switch and it worked! Can’t thank you enough!! ❤

I had an error code on my Furnace for the pressure switch. I watched your intuitive video on error codes and traced the cause to be condensate built up in the drain line, backing up into the vent motor which caused that motor to labor to run and trip out the system! I am truly thankful for teacher/Techs like you for sharing these incredibly helpful videos!!

I don't know how to thank you, I have a 12 year old Keeprite high E. it has a thermostat with a display, today I see it throwing a fault" pressure switch stuck closed" now picture this, it's mid January, -12°C degree outside, my wife and I are over 70 years old in a rural part of Peterborough, the only thing I could do at this time is to search youtube for this issue , your video is the only one I watched, it clearly explained step by step where to look, what to do, so I did them all like you showed, you should have seen the smile on my face when I heard the furnace "CLICK" and started to run, I sincerely hope you succeed in your personal and professional life, and thank you.

MAN!!! You the MAN... My hose port to the inducer fan was clogged. I used a piece of wire and stuck it in there a couple of times and WaLa, it fired right up... Thanks, You the MAN!!!

I had recently had to repair the condensate drain on my furnace, afterward I got a code 31. Thanks to this video I was able to realize I had put the pressure hoses on backward and switched ports! Working fine and saved me a couple hundred bucks! Thanks!

Jay, I've watched several of your videos and you've saved me a lot. My furnace would reset and come back on 30 minutes after cycling power. After checking many things, I finally pulled the intake pipe and discovered leaves and bits of leaves at the grate just above the burner box. I would have never suspected that since the intake is fairly well covered up outside. Good troubleshooting advice..and good perspective on potential problems. Well delivered as well! Many thanks! 👍

Thank you Jay . helped me solve my problem. Pressure switch wasn't working because condensate was backed up all the way up my outlet pipe due to ice forming at the exit from the house..

My heating was cut off at midnight! Called a 24/7 line and they wanted me to wait till the morning although they didn’t wait to let me know that they will charge $$$ for the visit. Ha! It took a bit but I have managed to follow your instructions and double check everything. Furnace is now fixed and is firing like it’s supposed to! I almost shouted out loud at 2am. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You rock! God bless. Will be watching all ads till I fall asleep.... haha

Great job, and Thank you! This helped me get my furnace working! I had to clean the pipe that came from the small fan and was attached to the rubber hose. I used a copper wire pressed into there an went back and forth to clean it a bit. (issue was that i had the light flash 3, for Stuck Open Pressure Switch)

Excellent, practical video. Thank you very much. The comment about high efficiency Carrier furnaces and the plugging up condensate trap was exactly what my issue was. The tip for the bucket was spot on - about a gallon of water came out. After I cleaned the trap, everything ran perfectly.

You're a lifesaver man. We rented a house 2 weeks ago, so I was going to have to wait until the morning for my landlord to get back to me and call an HVAC guy. I knew it wasn't the igniter or flame sensor, and knew the inducer motor wasn't turning on. I unplugged the pressure sensor tube and it didn't seem clogged, but I blew into it, plugged it back in, plugged my furnace back into the power source, and the whole thing turned on! It's really cold already in Rio Rancho, NM, so it was not good to have the heater off the rest of the night. Thanks so much! ❤❤❤ P.s. my husband is asleep while I was fixing the furnace haha 😋
