For those coming here thinking the ATC will have a meltdown, he doesn't, the ramp went to hell, but Steve as ever was calm and into control.

Probably because ramp controllers are ground handlers who would recruit anyone, whereas ATC is very difficult to get into it. In the UK ground controls the gates and it works well.

it's really amazing that one guy is responsible for helping get literally a million people to and from their destinations

Lol, JFK is run by a lot more than one guy. Ground is different from approach and tower and gate and so on, his specific job is to deal with planes on the tarmac either en route for takeoff or coming in to a gate. Hence the issue here - the gate is run by the company separately I believe, and as you can tell he has to relay requests to them if they aren’t doing well. Basically, that gate f’d up. It is astonishing the fluidity with which aircraft are passed between different controllers at different stages, and impressive that any can keep track so well though, no doubt. It’s just more like a complex watch where each gear is a person rather than one all powerful overseer. You can see how complicated just one piece is after all. Also, I don’t work ATC or anything so I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure over time the results of mental fatigue have been recognized and they try *not* to keep them overworked too long. At JFK I wouldn’t be surprised if it was 1-on 1-off hours or something like that, and limit it to maybe 8 total, idk, point being I don’t think they total even near 8 full hours on the clock, nobody could do this all day. So he isn’t personally talking to every crew on the ground that day. Some fraction of the planes though certainly

@@newname4405 I realize Steve is GRND, but it was confusing when I heard him giving Take off directions to a few of the pilots. That confused the heck out of me! He was telling them to fly RNWY heading 280 or whatever to meet his DME. That is the tower that would do that isn't it? So, that puzzled me why Steve at GRND was giving departure instructions. Weird...I must have missed something

@@TheStoneWhisperer If tower is busy, GRND will give departure instructions aswell. Also they probably have standardized procedures when there´s multiple aircraft taking off one after another.

BA are a lot of bad things as of late, but always had top tier pilots!

Calling this a melt down was quite the disservice to the masterful job he did. That was an amazing piece of coordination and I believe he kept his cool well throughout.

It doesn't say he was melting down (he's Ground here, not Ramp), it says Ramp was melting down (which was causing him the problems he was talking about). But based on other vids and what I've heard so far of him, this is close to a meltdown voice for him... he was a professional, and has an awesome personality, but here you can hear it that he is damn near just over it at that moment (yet did his job masterfully).

After listening to a couple of dozen of these I finally went and looked up the diagram for JFK. Now I understand why it's such a shitshow and ground is constantly battling... must be a hugely stressful job and you can either sweat your way through it or use humour to get you through, Steve obviously chose the latter approach, and it's great fun to listen to.

JFK wasnt designed for jet airliners either, it was laid out in the era of propeller passenger service. The first jet airliner didnt arrive at JFK until 1950.

Steve's memory is unbelievable to me. Short and long term. I'm also impressed that all of the pilots remember so many directions with no warning at times and can repeat them immediately and remember them and... Wow is everybody's memory this good, or just aviation people, or is mine bad, what?

pilots usually write down their taxi paths because they might be on it for a hour.

They have a notepad, and Steve can just look out the window. It takes a bit of practice to transcribe but you get the hang of it pretty quickly.

I believe pilots have the easier end of this bit as they only have to remember instructions that are specifically directed at them. On the other hand, I think it's practice and clear state of mind.

Sounded like he gave unprompted directions to a Tug after that and it would make sense that the signal wouldn't be as strong, so probably a Tug requesting to go to the same traffic jam everyone else was in.

Actually, I think it was a pilot asking to cross 31L, from her Hold point, to onward-taxi to another runway, cuz maybe it looked clear to her, and he said "No way" cuz he had other traffic due to come through quicker than she'd be able to cross... That's a safety hold, and life-saving. ;)

I love it when theres 5 minutes of pure chaos, then all of a sudden, everyone just slots into the sequence again, it's amazing stuff.

It is so nice to hear peofessionals working professionally, with appropriate humor and cooperation. So different from so many other parts of life! And I at times, Steve kinda sounds like Ray Romano.

@@FireLordJohn3191 It is A380 + also for the largest cargo plane. They create more wake turbulence + need a wider berth, + they need more separation in the air. It alerts ATC + other pilots in the vicinity.

Steve Kennedy is brilliant. He should have been a brain surgeon instead of a ground controller at JFK The way he handles traffic is like the conductor of a symphony orchestra. I have listened to many of his videos and he is "THE BEST" in the business in my opinion!

Unmatchable talent and professional expertise. A total and absolute expert at what he does. Hat's off to you Steve!

Steve is the definition of excellence. Guy is a legend, and for good reason.

He just lined up like 12 planes, and pushed them past 35L. He'd be a genius herding cats.

His life outside of work must be miserable. Imagine someone like him having to put up with dithering, incompetent people, which the vast majority of us are. Does he get any awards for what he does, I wonder?

He got a Dale Wright Award when he retired, so yes, he got recognition for his service.

This guy is a class act! And you just know a little bit of humor helps take the edge off of the stress, too. I can't even imagine the kind of stress these guys and gals go through. I look at some of those holding patterns for landing - slots backed up to the hilt, and you know they CAN'T make a mistake - they simply CAN'T!! Yes, the automation helps them some, but it is mostly THEM figuring things out (and in a damned hurry, too).

I had a friend that worked ATC Heathrow. First thing he'd do after work when he got home was to get a good strong cup of tea with a tot of whiskey in it... And he earned it!!!!

Kennedy Steve continues to impress and delight

Advise for any pilots flying JFK with Steve on ground, taxi as fast as traffic and speed restrictions will allow at all times....

I think normally he wouldn't have been that concerned, but because of the shitshow on the ramp, he wanted planes out of there as fast as he could move them.

Kennedy Steve is one of the few people I wish could be cloned. Enough Steves for every airport in the country. Also enough to cover every shift. He is the ATC that I would want taking care of my airplane.

I used to load special cargo on 747-400 or c-5 size planes daily. 2-3 times a year we had one of those Russian Antanov planes come in.. it was so strong we had to tie down everything above ground. The poor guy in the small plane had to wait like 15 mins. Before he could fly behind him. Sucker was so big it held well over 100 ton plus three helicopters. The pilots were crazy.. if you had shady,secret or J.I.T. cargo... As long as you pay cash, they'd take anything anywhere no questions asked.. long as the weight was correct they wouldn't check the manifest and get the destination once they were wheels up. Loved watching it fly in slow motion. Your mind can't comprehend how it stays in the air..

Well that’s not particularly clear. You mean the 225 or an earlier version? At least the 225 has jets, I would be terrified in a prop plane that big. I don’t care if technically props can be safer and not necessarily just dead weight with an engine failure, I prefer my planes non-shaky. Then again Russian pilots probably fly like they drive.

Ground control is a whole other beast, isn't it?. Amazing to listen to.

Not only is Kennedy Steve a MAHOOSIVE Legend, he's unbelievably good at his job. This man's attention to detail in such a phenomenally complicated workplace is mind boggling!!

This man sounds a LOT like a guy I work with from time-to-time. But he's in New York and I'm not, so that's not possible. He also sounds like he could be a great stand-up comedian. Maybe he is. But thank GOD he's there to keep things under control!!!

Don’t know about a meltdown, this Audio simply shows how exceptional these controllers are. Kudos to the gentleman controlling, one of the main reasons that Aviation is so safe now and these people are a blessing to us pilots, keep up the great work and thanks for sharing this snippet of of life on the Aviation waves

I think the meltdown occurred on the runway. The pilots and controller worked very well together to get everything running smoothly again.

As a pilot, this guy is impressive. Very much on top of things. Yeah, he can be short/direct, but that's ok with me! He can guide me anytime.

This reminds me of that time a French ATC in my local small, regional airport "fell asleep" (wasn't paying attention) on the job and an airbus crashed 20-ish years ago. Because he wasn't looking at the radar it took them a few days to find the massive wreck. That was kind of an achievement seeing as most of where I live is open plains with fields...

How can one man juggle so many aircraft and get it all right? Surely he can't keep up that pace for more than a few minutes at a time! And still he manages to keep a sense of humor, which promotes his good relationship with the pilots. Whatever he is paid, he deserves double. Well, as I've learned from an Interview with Kennedy Steve, they work 2 hours max before taking a break.

The ramp may have been melting, but Kennedy Steve was as cool as ever!

Hats off to Steve and the guys who keep up with him!

For the new people here you have to remember the ground controller can see the planes too, it’s less confusing that way. I’d recommend listening to these types of recordings while looking at the maps of the relevant airfield.

Oustanding job, this guy must be fantastic at tetris. This is not an easy job, so kudos for keeping cool.

I can barely make out every second word, pilots and ATC talk so fast! And I'm sure I would be fired as a pilot after forgetting the third direction in the sentence🤣🤣🤣

If it is this busy on one of the aprons at JFK, imagine what its like on final approach!

Great job! A visual representation of all the planes on the ground he was dealing with would be nice.

OMG-- I may never fly again!! But sitting in my bedroom, it is really funny!!

The burn out rate for these miracle workers was incredibly high in the old days, before all the fancy technology. They carried the weight of huge responsibility and turned up the next day to do it all again. Then, every once in a while, one would stop turning up. These blokes are legends.

Three-One Left sits West of the main airport complex /Terminals / Gates, and Oh-Four Left - the other runway used for Takeoff - is 90deg to 31L, south of the airport. Once Tower has finished Landing a String Of Pearls up 31L, and has a gap, Ground (for departures) will know & seenwhen it's SAFE for waiting aircraft to CROSS the 31L runway onto further texiway to line up for Takeoff on 04L. I cannot even begin to imagine the number of mistakes I would make if I tried to do this job... holy hell man

This humor is aggressively specific. The accents’ are spot on, the narrator makes me feel ashamed- but in a good way. After studying the letters & numbers, realized they are all jibberish. Except for Bravo. Bravo indeed.

Can anyone imagine how stressful the job of a controller doing the approach/depature job is - or rather HAS been before they introduced computer aided radar terminals? Only thing they had was the radar signal and the mode3 info. So they had to take all this 2-dimensional info and transform it into a 3-dimensional picture in their head to maintain separation. Having said "has been" - there are still plenty of airports all around the world - even very busy ones - where they don't have the new-gen radars. Now throw some weather and terrain obstacles into the mix and you have ballgame ^^

OMG! I can't imagine how you can remember all of that, I understand that he have a radar or something, but... wow! And other pilots need to listen all the time what he is saying and not to miss info for them and then understand and repeat it... I love flying and it's very interesting to be able to see a little of what is happening before your flight started. Thank you for this videos! Sorry for my English :)

These aviators -- pilots and controllers -- are the definition of professional. Their experience and training over the years allow them to accomplish the superhuman communications you hear here. The controller, Steve Abraham is among the very best in his profession, and uses humor to ease the tensions controllers and pilots experience that result from the extreme workload and high stakes of moving all the aircraft safely and efficiently -- even when part of the team (in this case, Ramp Control) is, as Steve has put it, "a modicum of efficiency!"
