😂😂😂 now THATS funny. I bet that would've given Steve a chuckle.

I just realized why this guy is so much funnier than most others. Most others mostly bark out directions, bam bam bam, and if you don't get it, they tend to become more or less irritated. This guy actually TALKS to everyone, and if some poor foreign pilot doesn't understand, he says it in a different way instead of just repeating the same phrase.

Yeah, this controller is one of the good ones. As you say, it sounds like he basically got backed into a corner, having to keep a bunch of airplanes on taxiways that didn't have gates to go to, so had to make up procedures on the fly. Yuck. And did a great job and wasn't pissy with people.

+Buidalot problem is that empty gates may not actually be for due to regional carriers DBA said major airline. due to contracts and stuff, they can't work each others' gate even though they wear the same uniform

@All_Roads As I understand it, at most airports, the ramp controllers are actually provided by the airlines and are really just there to keep the ramp organized so that stuff like this doesn't happen. Sometimes they fail. At some airports (JKF, LGA, IAD, LAX) they fail frequently and often in spectacular fashion.

Ground is the ramp radio, the pilots will call ops to get clearance to their gate, or reschedule a departure if they missed their takeoff slot. JFK Steve works a lot of magic because JFK & LGA are old terminal designs that makes things like a cul-de-sac with only enough room for one way traffic and the alleyways are relatively long. He works to get groups of planes out at once and then get planes all into their gates at once. Otherwise it's one out and one in and takes forever. It's ok if people pay attention and answer questions with what he is asking not some short story ala Aeroflot. When weather slows things down is when things grind to a stop because there are only so many places he can park a plane before to move one into the ramp/gate he has to reshuffle 8 planes. The tugs often just want to move to another location where they will be needed next, but don't have a plane waiting on them. ATL doesn't have the issues because the alleys are wide enough for 2 planes and entrances on both ends. A lot of other airports even if they don't have 2 entrances to the alleys the alleys aren't very deep (MIA, FLL for example) JFK Steve made things that other GND controllers freeze up on just a walk in the park.

Steve, there is no one who can manage JFK Ground like you even with all the frustration you must experience. You seem to take everything in stride without getting upset. Love your sense of humor which I am sure pilots appreciate since most are experiencing stress just to get an open gate!

Kennedy Steve is an amazing controller. I'd hate to be flying on Delta into JFK, that ramp seems so bad. I'm sure they're professionals and all but they sure sound like they're a cluster....

+Frobbeline problem is that even though it says at the gate, it could be one of the regional carriers DBA and due to union/company rules, they actually have different staff (even though same uniform) and therefore cannot work each others gate.
