Functional Practicing | Kenny Aronoff

We had the amazing pleasure to have Kenny Aronoff come out to the Drumeo studios. Kenny is one of the most in demand live and session drummers. If you listen to music, then you've most likely heard his drumming at one point or another.

All right! But drumset's sound is terrible (totally unnatural, like Roland have). The Cinderella's Still climbing album is one of the best works of Kenny with REALLY awesome sounding.

What so many kids don't understand is that Kenny is in demand because he is a professional in all areas of his craft. He does what the client wants and needs. Thats how you make a solid living. Chops are great and its good to have a wide range of abilities, however, a majority of songs that become hits are based on simple grooves. AC/DC is a classic example of the most basic beats in a song. Kenny understands how to give a song only what it needs. It takes years of experience to be able to do that. He put it perfectly when he said "without the cake, the icing is useless". Anyone who is mature would be wise to just be a sponge and learn. There is always room to grow. -BA

Exactly man, well said. Besides, apart drum afficionados (you know, the ones looking for all the best licks and most extravaggant polyrhythms, voting for the best drummer around and trolling endlesly about their opinions) all non-drummer musicians are looking exactly for what Kenny describes: "The right beat for their songs, no matter how simple it sounds to you" (I'm paraphrasing here in my own words). If you are not willing to go that path, or your ego is bigger than the composer or band leader then either you won't get many offers OR you will get kicked out of bands too often.

Exactly. Think of it this way: Someone at your concert shouldn't really be thinking about YOU on the drums (unless they're drummers so they have special interest in other drummers), but it you were to STOP playing, everyone should lament on how much seems to be lost. THAT'S when you've hit the proper spot.

This time drumeo is more than a drum channel. Kenny speaks about a philosophie of progress and conditionning . All his approach is really down to earth , simple and realistic. A way to do it right here right now just to be the more effective you could be. Keeping a realistic goal not to lose yourself in a dimension where your work will never be produce . ( i hope what i wrote could communicate what i feel , as english is not my language ).

It was fun reading the comments about Ken, both positive and negative, and it's easy to see that a good number of people don't "get" what it is that makes him get hired all the time by many of the best players in the world. To some of the people here scratching their heads thinking, "Hmm, he doesn't have the perfect rolls and speed of, say, Neil Peart, blah, blah...No, you won't get any argument out of Kenny that he doesn't have the chops of a Dennis Chambers/ Colaiuto / Weckl, etc - but he will tell you that he will out work, out prepare, and out think other players. He's just a consummate pro who shows up prepared, having done his homework, and ready to anticipate what may be thrown his way and all to a level of professionalism most young people (many old ones, too) don't even realize exists. For example, if some of the naysayers on here realize how often this cat has beaten out Their favorite drummers for jobs. You can't believe how many great, some extremely well known drummers auditioned for the John Fogarty gig...

i actually think its a great honor that you had kenny aronoff on set. i have seen this guy when i was a freshman in college and i have never seen such a professional drummer in my life until today. yes he is a rock star but he never takes that for granted. he comes 2 hours before the scheduled time to get his gear fixed which is not something that a lot of rock stars would do nowadays. very nice guy as well.

Kenny's the man, every time any band from any genre loses a drummer, Kenny jumps in and save the day. I think he was playing with a big band group cuz there drummer had the flu, then jumped into the Smashing Pumpkins tour when Jimmy Chamberlain got arrested for heroin. The guy is always on the ball.

+1 for Charms434's comment. I believe Kenny also filled in for Todd Sucherman of Styx when Todd has his baby. I believe he only had a couple of weeks to learn the show. As an older drummer I can't say enough how impressive that is. The older you get the harder it is to remember all the intricate shit you need to play in a song to keep it true to the original. Kenny is a true professional. If that doesn't make him great then I don't know what will in the eyes of some of these negative commenters.

Huge thanks to Kenny for sharing his thoughts and experience and, more importantly, the actual music sheet for the beats. It is a rare thing to have actual HAND-WRITTEN sheet by drummers of his calibre. That is, not music sheet that looks perfect printed on a magazine or book, but a music sheet that explains exactly what you want from a song you want to rehearse, in a minimalistic and practical way. It is a master class of its own to learn how to efficiently transcribe a song in a way that suits YOU first of all and this is an excellent example. I have already taken notes :-) Greetings from Greece Kenny, and thanks Drumeo for hosting this excellent clinic/interview.

What an amazing player and a fantastic lesson by a legend like Kenny. I like how he has his rack toms reversed 12” then the 10” just like his acoustic kit with the 2nd closed hihat in his right side so he can play open handed. That really shows off how much work he has put in to develop his ambidextrous abilities like he talks about in the lesson.

"I will never be as great as I want to be; but, I'm willing to spend the rest of my life trying to be as great as I can be." ~Kenny Aronoff (In an Italian accent) This guy ...this guy....he makes a mother proud. Love Kenny and everything he has done. What a freakin' inspiration he has been in my life. I would have preferred this interview/session was done on an acoustic kit. These electrics just didn't translate well. I love my A2E's and playing them. Man, some things are just timeless, like real acoustic drums and Kenny Aronoff.

He's an old friend and his bass player Dan is my old bass player from back in the day. Dan mentioned to me once that you (Kenny) reminded him of me, I guess we play alike. I thought that was pretty cool. Keep up the great work Kenny, YOU ROCK.

his secret weapon is that personality. met him at the NAMM show and was wearing a Pittsburgh Steelers sweatshirt. they were in the playoffs. it was a long line to meet and greet. he talked football for 20 mins...everyone was pissed...kenny's personality was larger than life...no self-consciousness...who wouldnt want to work with him? neighbor was a drummer and at every cattle call, kenny was there...work ethic was off the chart. he is not a deep reflective thinker...move and move on...stay busy and his style is as practical. weckl and donati fans will not understand his skills and minimize his playing, but he knows limits and boundaries and gets the job done FAST...a producers dream

Here's easily what functional practicing is: actively listen to what you're playing. Does it sound right? If not, why not? how can you fix it? After that, how does it feel? Are you working way too hard to pull out certain things? If so, slow it down and work up to that speed, or if it's for band and you don't have time to get that part perfect, simplify it.

I see some 'Negative' comments like " he is sloppy " etc. ,I can tell Its partially the pads and partially that Kenny tries to go through many examples as possible . And yeah it feels a little bit rushed maybe or not 100% Precise here and there. But did you guys hear the intro songs he played too ? He has an amazing Feel to make Songs breath with a true Rock N Roll Vibe . There is only a handful in the world that can pull off what Mr. Aranoff can . I had the Privilage in 96' the last concert of the tour at Pine Knob , to be invited by Charlie Allen Martin , who was the Original drummer for Bob Seeger til a drunk driver put him in the wheel chair . Charlie was telling me , 'Check Kenny out ' ! what i learned from standing behind his drum raiser that evening made a LONG lasting impression on me about Kenny's Pocket . its Unreal when you see and hear him that close kicking the band in the ass .

I was actually amazed someone besides myself used an e~kit. I use it to practice and record at home. Good software is a must though. Kontakt studio drummer is my favorite of the 3 I've tried. As far as dynamics go... this guy has dynamics and showed it in a few spots on this video. Although his normal m.o. is very straight forward and he uses his chops sparingly. That's why he's working so much. I will admit he's not on my A list of great drummer's, but he can definitely play and I give kudos to his longevity!

I've seen Kenny live with John Fogerty and he's one of the most solid drummers I've ever heard. He made the rest of the band sound as tight as a fish's asshole.

I actually just saw John Fogerty a week ago in San Diego and he's still rocking with him. Honestly one of the best sounding performances I've ever experienced
