Fun with Static Electricity! - A Prequel to "Should a Person Touch 200,000 Volts?"

Let's have some fun with static electricity! Simple experiments illustrating the fact that opposite charges attract and like charges repel.

If anyone has a sense of history and they look at the publication date, they will ask "Why did they hold this during the middle of a pandemic?" The obvious answer - that it was held before the pandemic - won't be obvious to some. So, you post the clarifying comment to avoid needing to do something like this...
The 2021 episode of everyone’s favourite yearly series!
Such an awesome teacher. Breaks things down so they’re easier to grasp, and understand.

One atom says to another, "Hey! I have lost an electron." The second atom says, "Are you sure?" The first atom says, "Yes. I'm positive." (My apologies: old physics joke.)
This guy explained it better in 15 minutes than my tech teacher did over the course of 9 months (also that little "fly, be free, go!" with the packing peanuts was peak comedy)
"What's the largest thing around?" -YOU! "Uuhhh not me 🙄 what's the largest thing around?" -THE EARTH! "YES! I'm not larger than the planet thank you very much" Wow that got me omg 🤣🤣🤣🤣

At the end he is like: "Should a person touch it?" But touched it several times before in the video.
@dripcat5940
3 жыл бұрын
yeah but he only touched it when the other dome was in contact with the first dome, so electrons from the main dome travelled to the earth thru the second dome and didnt affect him. if he wouldve just touched the dome directly he wouldve been electrocuted.

sir I have a question that why opposite charge attract and same charge repel each other???
"Two pieces of plastic 🤤" sounded like Ryan Reynolds on DeadPool.
Damn video ended on the main cliffhanger, I wanted to see someone touch the dome with the belt in it.
@JeffersonLab
3 жыл бұрын
There's a reason why the title includes "A Prequel to 'Should a Person Touch 200,000 Volts?'" The resolution to the cliffhanger already exists in an older video called... Should a Person Touch 200,000 Volts? Links are in the description, or right here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/p5aO17WTibmonso.html
Mr. Jefferson... Just a small indispansable question : Is all of that magical actions came out of a coincidence? 🤔
I wonder what if you would try this experiment out in space with the same tools?
@JeffersonLab
2 жыл бұрын
In space? Like, in vacuum? Well, for starters, with the same tools, it would be a very quick presentation as the presenter would quickly die. And, the Van de Graaff wouldn't do nearly as much as it depends on the resistivity of the air to allow charges to collect on its dome.
The kid in the background " we don't know"

How fast can a jet make it around the world? GlobalFlyer landed at Salina at 19:50 UTC (13:50 CST) on 3 March 2005, having completed its circumnavigation in 2 days, 19 hours, 1 minute and 46 seconds. As of 2019, this is the fastest world trip in its class at a speed of 550.78 km/h. The light takes roughly 130 ms to travel around the earth - that is seven and a half times round per second.
Here before it gets recommended to everyone 10 years later

would that spark burn your finger if touched (as it is hotter than the suns surface)?
@JeffersonLab
2 жыл бұрын
One spark? No. But, if you had a constant arc going for long enough, you'd start to run into trouble.
Electricity doesn't pick the easier way. Instead the least resistance draws the highest current. And the purpose of ground is to draw high current so the circuit breaker kicks in when the safety of conductive casing is compromised.

How come the plastic pieces still repelled each other after putting the nail between them? The nail is a conductor and so are you so how come they didn’t lose their negative charge when you did that? Was the current too slow to discharge the static electricity?
@JeffersonLab
11 ай бұрын
The nail is a conductor, but the plastic isn't. Touching the nail to the plastic doesn't allow for the bulk of the charge to move to ground. If a charge happens to be somewhere other than where the nail is touching, it's difficult for it to move through the plastic to get to the nail. So, the plastic remains charged, even when the nail is placed between them.

its been 10 years and NOW you show us the prequel?
@JeffersonLab
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. There were some issues with the original footage that prevented us from using it for this. And it's also kind of a pain to record these things (lots of permission slips/release forms that we don't typically need to deal with, etc...). So... yeah. 10 years. Still a better pace than what they did with Star Wars. We have less CGI, though. Maybe we'll add some background creatures if we ever release a Special Edition.
