Fun with Self-Sealing Balloons and Bottles // Homemade Science with Bruce Yeany

Sticking pencils and food skewers through plastic bags and balloons has been a common and popular activity for students of all ages over the years. It is a nice lead in to talk about polymers. Once this is done with bags they are pretty much done for but what happens after you pull the skewers out of the balloons, the balloons deflate and that's the end of them. Here is an additional lesson that can be used to generate interest in how fiber in food may be used as a sealant to reseal the balloons and keep it inflated. The demonstration shows commercial products for resealing tires that have gone flat behave and is even similar to the clotting of blood. This can be a worthwhile activity for students to explore and discover other materials that behave the same way.

Wow, this video was great! Referring it back to blood clotting was really cool, I never realised how simple the process was; it basically runs itself. The tricky part is making it so the platelets are only activated near a wound otherwise you end up with a life-threatening Pulmonary Embolism. Thanks so much for making this.

Blood is also a shear-thinning fluid which means it flows better under pressure (your heart pumping) and is closer to a solid without pressure. It's the opposite of oobleck!

Love your videos! I have an idea for future videos. You could tell even more about the physics behind all these awesome tricks, maybe by explaining laws or by using more simulations on paper or something. That way you wouldn't need to use that much of video material and you could make more videos and I really feel like that would make yor videos even more interesting and scientific. Sorry for poor english. Good to see you back sensei!

I do not know a lot about grain polymers so hopefully someone else can clarify this better. I think the two descriptions you give are pretty much the same action. Clumping would be the result of the long chains of polymers linking together. The polymer I was referring to in the video is the materials making up the plastic bag and the latex balloon. However, grains and proteins can also be a natural polymer, so I would guess the polymer chains link together at the opening to help form the seal. White processed wheat might not work so well due to it missing the endosperm which is fiber, processing removes this. Whole wheat would be a better choice.

@@YeanyScience Okay, I understand. If youre still using that camera, here are some solutions that could help you: - Connect an external mic directly to your camera (even a cheap but new mic would do better), - Record sound separately using a phone for example, and then in a video editing software such as Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, or a different programme (there are some free ones) swap the audio from the camera for audio from your secondary recorder. - In your camera setting search for something called a limiter, compressor or gain, and try different values for these settings, then test if the audio gets any better. Hope it helps ;)

LOL, probably too much compression for the oatmeal. Originally I heard that a favorite trick of used car salesmen was to put oatmeal in the car radiator to stop it from leaking, that's the idea for this came from. I also heard that oatmeal was added to transmission and rear differential oils to make them run quieter.

I've never quite seen what's interesting about the "stick through baloon/bag demonstration". It doesn't even register with me as anything more interesting than say balancing a coin on it's side. Definitely a thing but. I tend to feel demonstrations are interesting when they involve something unexpected, novel, or different from a previous experience; when an expectation is challenged. Balancing toys are novel because most things are unstable when they balance. Soap dropped on a water surface covered with peppers makes the peppers run to the edge is novel because droppong anything else into the liquid doesn't do that. Water biung sucked up a glass when a candle inside it goes out is novel because liquids usually dont move upwards on their own. But what's the expectation being subverted with the stick through bag? (Speaking about it as a standard demonstration. Not specifically the video as as this self-sealing variant is novel in the sense that doesnt happen with most liquids)
