Ik zit met dit altijd in een soort spagaat. Ik ben eigenlijk een republikein, maar als ik naar de politiek kijk word ik niet vrolijk en ik moet er dan ook niet aan denken dat iemand daarvan 'President' zou moeten worden.

Maxima has a special position in the UN! Also, when I was 12 a designing competition was organised to design the flag for the birth op Princess Amalia (just before she was born). The design from a girl in my class won. So she got to visit them in their palace to give them the flag. When Princess Amalia was a few days old, our whole class was also invited to the flag factory in Dokkum where the flag was made. This is a really fun memory of my last year of primary school.

The monarchy did not start in 1869 as I think you said, but in 1806, when (indeed) Napoleon I made his younger brother Louis King of Holland.. Louis did not speak Dutch of course, but he truely did want to make something of his Kingship and started to learn Dutch. He was thought by Bilderdijk, at the time one of the most famous Dutch writers and poets. The story goes that one day the King wanted to show off his newfound knowledge of Dutch and proudly proclaimed “Ik ben de Konijn van Hollande” - I am the rabbit of Holland. For his French ears, “Koning” (King) and “konijn” (rabbit) must have sounded almost alike.... After Napoleon annexed the Netherlands in 1810, Louis Bonaparte lost his Dutch throne after only four years, but he was never forgotten: in I think 1845 King Willem II invited him for an extended tour of his old Kingdom and he was welcomed very warmly everywhere by older people who remembered his short but just and wise reign. It seems that Louis was touched deeply by the affection of the Dutch and by the fact that he had not been forgotten.

Perhaps an interesting titbit. The king, his wife and daughters go to theaters unannounced. I was at an Ice Age performance in Ahoy and a few front row seats were bordered off. Seconds before the show started the royal family appeared and sat down. They watched the show like everyone else and were ushered away just before the break to a private area. There was only minimal security present.

The Royal family will cost me 3 euro a year, 240 euro on a lifetime. Considering we are such a small country our Royal family is very important on an international level. A president would also have security and use the palaces. So money very well spend in my opinion!

And elections every four years, that also costs money. And politics get their claws on the highest function of the country. And we know what mess politicians make. And a monarchy makes your country stand out more, which is important for a small country. More people know the royal family or the king of The Netherlands than the president of Portugal, or Slovakia for that matter. On a state visit the a royal can open more doors for trade than a president. So I prefer a monarchy.

@@RealConstructor All the high(er) functions should be executed by elected officials in a democracy. When the government or the PM isn't functioning well, they step back and will be replaced after new elections. That's democracy. In a democracy you don't want a monarch - who simply inherets his position by birth - to have real power. Let alone for life. When a monarch sucks he/she doesn't get fired (- although monarch's can be dethroned and/or beheaded.. ;) ..). That's why I think it's best to not have a monarch(y) at all, or merely a monarch with no real power but just representative tasks, for show abroad and a sense of unity of the people. But when a monarch (and family) costs too much, performs lousy and looses the trust and respect of the people, this may induce the end of the monarchy.

At least kings/queens have to learn how to keep there position, have really nothing to say in politics, but have a rol of holding the nation togethere, combine. Its not about money in the first place. Do you think Trump and Poetin cost the tax payers less, i dont think so. And how did the people from Russia an The US benifit from those two????? Trump was more extensieve in for years for the people in the US ( the world in fact) than our king Willem-Alexander his hole life. Yeah i think it can be a bit less, but i an Dutch. @@frankaschapendonk7220 The voting system in the US is far from perfect, because of the Electoral College and a shameless republican party. But still...Trump got sent home, didn't he? Democracy won in the end, though you could say that every democracy gets the leader(s) its people deserves. Except when a democracy is corrupted, or doesn't see to it that a president or PM can't be or place himself above the democratic laws. Anything you said about how a monarch can secure his/her position by pleasing the people also goes for an eternal dictatorial president (Putin, Erdogan), but I wouldn't choose to go those routes. And why would we need a separate president, when there's already a PM and an adminstration/kabinet?

The Royal Family of The Netherlands may be the most expensive of Europe, but only in absolute amounts. Per citizen Norway is the most expensive with €6,37 (NL €2,32) and Belgium €3,30 but including security costs. Spain has an unbelievable amount of €0,19 per citizen, so they probably have hidden costs on the national budget somewhere. And the House of Windsor has lots of income from there numerous lands and possessions, so they don’t need so much state support. So because of lack of transparency, it is hard to compare the numbers. Some pay tax, a lot of them don’t. Source: fact check of NRC Handelsblad.

Our Royal Family, including the King, always sings along our national anthem at the top of their lungs 😉 Of course, this has nothing to do with the current King Filipe of Spain, but with the 16th century King Philip II, who ruled over The Netherlands until the Dutch separated from Spain in the 80 Year’s War under the leadership of William of Orange.

The autocratic King William I of NL was the first king of NL. Before that, the figureheads of the dutch provinces were the stadtholders, such as William (the Silent) of Orange (the national anthem Het Wilhlemus is about WtS). After the assassination of WtS in 1584, the Dutch wanted to have Elisabeth I of England as their monarch, but she refused, as this would have drawn England directly into war with Spain. The war happened anyway...the Spanish Armada was defeated by the English in 1588. A century later, the great-grandson on WtS Willem Frederick of Orange became King William III of England in the Glorious Revolution. I noticed that Queen Elizabeth II's maternal grandmother had the surname Cavendish-Bentinck. The name Bentinck sounds like Overijssel to my ears. Sure enough, when we trace back we find that a certain dutch nobleman from Diepenheim, Overijssel named Hans-William Bentinck came over with William III in the Glorious Revolution and remained William's trusted advisor, and became the 1st Earl of Portland.

The Netherlands before Napoleon's Kingdom of Holland surely wasn't a set of divided monarchies. In the Middle Ages it was a part of the Holy Roman Empire, which wasn't holy, wasn't Roman and wasn't an empire. The Low Countries (including today's Belgium) had been prospering for centuries and had managed to get a lot of autonomy and civil rights, partly by paying a lot of taxes to the overlord. Through inheretance it became part of the Spanish Empire 1555. King Philip II of Spain was a fanatic catholic who's mission in life was to root out protestantism. He sent the Spanish Inquisition onto both the Dutch protestants and catholics, who were like 'we manage those matters ourselves here', so after a lot of torture and burnings at the stake as well as refusals to do so the Dutch revolted. Under the leadership of the king's former steward (Stadtholder) William of Orange the Northern Provinces united in The Union of Utrecht in 1579 which codified freedom of conscience and therefore religious tolerance. In 1581 they declared the king had become a tyrant who failed to serve his people and acknowledge their rights and had therefore left the throne of the Netherlands, and the Dutch had to right to no longer recognize him as their king and declared independenc. This 'Plakkaat van Verlatinghe' was materially much like the American Declaration of Independence almost 200 years later. They went looking for a new king, but couldn't find one, partly because non of the monarch supplying families was enthousiastic about this idea of kings having to serve their people instead of being send by god and therefore with the right to tell the people how to believe in god. So the Dutch decided to go ahead without a king as the Republic of the United 7 Provinces, also known as the Dutch Republic. God's wrath didn't come, on the contrary. The Dutch were in the process of inventing modern capitalism and the wind powered wood saw, and dominated the huge Baltic Sea trade. The Spanish hadn't given up and the troops were a pain in what was to be known as the 80-years war, but by 1600 William of Orange son Maurits had shown his military brilliance more than once and the Dutch Republic was stable on most of it's territory. The prime minister, Van Oldenbarnevelt decided to take the war to the Spanish (including the Portugese) colonial empire which was used to finance the war against Dutch independence and created a global trade empire, with some colonial crime on the side certainly but they didn't want to rule large area's and populations like the monarchs and didn't have the manpower for it anyway. By the 1640's the Dutch Republic with it's 1.5 million population was the economic superpower of the world with more merchant ships than Spain, Britain and France combined and did more than half of Europe's trade and with a lot of proto-industrialization and a very wealthy and big spending middle class, needless to say they were rich, extremely rich. The Stadtholder (usually of the Orange family) was done with and the prime minister De Witt was the son of a humble woodstacker. The protestants ruled but there was religious tolerance although the catholics had to keep a low profile. It was by far the most egalitarian nation of it's day, it had extensive rights and freedoms, for women too, and freedom of prints. More than half of Europe's books were printed here and especially the enlightened ones while Locke and Descartes lived and worked in that freedom here. In contrast with the situation overseas though, in 1637 the Dutch Republic gave up on it's calvinist objections and entered the transatlantic slavetrade. It had brought the Spanish Empire to it's knees, it had outfinanced them, and they were forced to officially recognize Dutch independence in 1648, after 80 years. The success of the Dutch Republic didn't go down well with the European monarchs, especially not the catholic ones, and the king of England went behind the Dutch back to conspire with Louis XIV and a large part of the German rulers to attack the Dutch Republic from the sea, the South and the East at the same time. This resulted in the disaster year 1672. De Witt with his focus on Holland had neglected the land defense in the Eastern and Southern Netherlands, and after months of fear and despair was killed and mutilated by an angry mob together with his brother, a mob that had turned to William III of Orange for hope. He was appointed Stadtholder and despite his family links to European royals and the English in particular he was loyal to the republic, he flooded large parts of the country in defense and managed to fence off the attacks and stabilize the Dutch Republic again. In the 1680's England was on it's way to become an absolute catholic monarchy again and Stadtholder William III decided to invade. He plotted with John Locke to have English parliamentarians to invite him and not make it look like a conquest to get popular support and spare bloodshed and English pride, which works until today since they call it their own 'Glorious Revolution'. But he came with a fleet bigger than the Spanish Armada and 40.000 troops and occupied London while king James II fled, English troops ran or defected and the people welcomed the liberator on his white horse with his promise of religious tolerance and the printing press he brought for propaganda. The Stadtholder, basically a civil servant of the Dutch Republic, got crowned king William III of England and later Scotland and N-Ireland and gave Britain it's current constitutional monarchy with it's bill of rights and religious tolerance. He also modernized the economy which allowed the much larger Britain to take over from the Dutch Republic as the economic superpower and become the British Empire, but he got what he wanted, a stable protestant ally. In the shadow of the British Empire the Dutch Republic faired reasonably well in the 18th century but was in decline as a world power. The enlightenment philosophies printed in the Netherlands resulted in the French Revolution which resulted in Napoleon, who wanted The Netherlands as a cash cow. Thanks to an extremely harsh winter his troops could simply march over the Hollandic waterline and took the whole of the Netherlands. He made his brother Louis 'king of Holland'. Contrary to the Corsican capo himself Louis was a very enlightened and gentle man who really loved the Dutch and the Dutch loved him back, his brother Napoleon didn't because he was in the way extracting maximum money. Louis was the one who made the Palace on the Dam from City Hall, a showpiece of the Dutch Republic, into the Royal Palace. He was also the king that put on his boots in case of disaster to give support to the unlucky people and lead the relief effort, and example still followed by the current royal family. Napoleon was beaten, the British took credit and ran the show afterwards. The Netherlands were bankrupt (which explains the crown) with most of it's colonies occupied by the British because of Napoleon and the British were scared of republicanism and the French, so they decided the Netherlands had to re-unite with the Southern Netherlands (Belgium now) as a buffer state to France. And it had to become a monarchy of course so the Orange-Nassau's residing in Germany were asked. Because of Louis there was popular support for a king and because of history there was popular support for the Oranges Where the Dutch gave Britain it's constitutional monarchy, we got an absolute monarchy in return. This was soon to be corrected, the resulting in the 1848 constitution (after the Belgians split in 1830 because the countries had grown apart in 2 centuries of the Dutch Republic) but still.... One could say we're still a republic so tolerant that we even tolerate a monarchy. Anyway, the monarchy isn't as self evident as it might seem. There has always been campaiging and propaganda for support and surpressing the history of the Dutch Republic and Louis Napoleon's reign is part of that, and playing Louis XIV with a golden carriage and all might not have been the right choice. Wilhelmina was a feisty one and had WWII, during Juliana's reign the monarchy got wobbly thanks to scandals and the zeitgeist. Beatrix is higly intelligent and was extremely capable and solidified the monarchy, Now Willem-Alexander has to watch his steps. He's a bit passive rather than distant on the political front, they are a bit too greedy, they see the rules bend for them and too often they give the impression they're not in the same boat with us. Are they 'somewheres' or 'anywheres', is their loyalty with the people or with the international billionaire class? Popular support is fading, slowly but surely. He's accepted for who he is, a bit clumsy and not always at ease with his role, but he's got serve the people and deliver. Throwing the people a big party once every year is important, and a suffering for the royal family of course, but it's not enough. After all this is a country where republicans celebrate King's Day too. Not much party anyway today, hence my little essay on history of the Netherlands, and I don't know if the lack of party for the second year in a row due to covid is partly responsible for the decrease in popular support. His mother had a very clear focus of what she wanted the monarchy to be and worked towards that, maybe it's time he develops a vision on his kingship.

Haha, well, not really an interaction, more of a "Oh *peep* I'm waaay to late!" when I was doing camerawork at a music event to bring music lessons to elementary school chlidren and the finale of the event was in the Heineken Music Hall (named different these days I think). The man who trained me as a camera operator had said this "So, it's the princess, so it's a little bit less of a crazy chaos then it would be when the queen goes somewhere" (when this happened King Willem-Alexander was still the prince) "but still, you need to be quick, when the Royal Press Service removes the ribbon, MOVE as quick as you can." And guess what I did: I did it as fast as I thought I could and still it was as if everyone had disappeared with the snap of a finger. I managed to make some different kinds of footage by holding the camera as far above my head as possible (and since most camera operators are taller than me that sometimes doesn't work either) but I had some footage. When I came back, the man who coached me asked me with a big smile on his face "Were you on time?" and I was like "Nope!" and his response was only something like "Don't worry, I was late the first time as well", but he still was pleased when he saw the footage containing some other camera's near the bottom of the frame and the royal family. "Good, you see there's more camera people there but you still see the royal family as well...good!" I never felt better about something I made hehe :P .

It seems so absurd that a modern, progressive people would hold onto such an expensive and pointless institution! it also gives the impression that the people are being lied to about the institution. Every European Royal Family is related to each other mainly through one or more of Queen Victoria's 11 children, this makes them all of Austrian/German/Russian descent. Victoria was an Hanovarian, married a German Prince, the British Royal Families name up to 1914 was Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. George V changed it to Windsor to distance the Family from its German ancestry in WW1. It is now Mountbatten-Windsor as Prince Philip got his way for the change in the 1960's although still officially Windsor. Although Philip was born in Corfu into the Greek Royal Family, that family was of German/Russian descent. He would often boast he was more Royal than the Queen as both his parents were Royal! George VI having married the daughter of a Scottish Duke as was 2nd in line to the Throne and not expected to ascend. Edward VIII's abdication changed that. The Netherlands is also related by William of Orange and Mary who were invited to take the British Throne jointly and equally as a dispute in Royal lineage was about to erupt into a second civil war in Britain.

That needs a little clarification as foreigners see this as state-owned. The fun fact is that all the schools in the Netherlands are run as autonomous companies. They are funded by the state up to a certain amount and have to obey to a set of standards and results. Apart from that the can have their own orientation, as christian, neutral Montesori or other. It's a rather akward system. But it seems to function. Hence our extraordinary intelligence (haha). Keepup the good spirit. Your Dutch is getting better with every video

Well, in the case of the UK the income from the monarch's estates goes to the treasury, so they actually make money for the state on balance. By comparison, in The Netherlands the official palaces belong to the country and not the monarch. So upkeep is a national expense.

His nickname W van buren was a big mistake. They Van egmond family claimed the village buren and kick out there previous owners the family van buren. From that moment the van egmond family changed there name to Van buren. There daughter anna van buren(officialy van egmond) married with willem the silent. The royal family is not related to anna van buren/egmond.

But Argentina made a special law at the request of the Netherlands so that Maxima could lose her Argentinian citizenship. Otherwise Maxima's and WA's children also would have dual citizenship.

Gelukkige koningsdag! Goed late koningsdag!

The government airplane, not the Royal Dutch airplane. Fun fact it had to be a Boeing instead of an Airbus product because the king would have had to re qualify to be able to fly it. Another fun fact the plane wasn’t bought new. Although the government could have bought a new Airbus for less money ( as rumoured) Another fact ministers ( anyone) is not allowed to repeat conversations with the king, because that could endanger the monarchy ( not the official Eason) the law says says the king is inviolate, the ministers are responsible. So officially the king has no opinions and if he has them he is not supposed to let his opinions be known. The king has no power tough he is officially the head of state. In a country like the Netherlands he walks a tightrope although he is not elected its fairly certain the monarchy will end if he loses support. In my opinion the only reason the monarchy still exists is that presidents are even less acceptable to the Dutch ( Nederlanders) On several occasions in the past the monarchy was in mortal danger twice during the reign of queen Juliana.

No one knows why the maintenance of princess Beatrix her boat is of defense money- on top of that every screw used must be at least of gold because these yearly costs are ridiculous- Also cost to renovate the housing is a big question mark as well- It was found that years ago the royal familie had sold furniture and the likes to the state and now can use it for free but also get reimbursed for the maintenance while they are not entitled to that money- and we can go on and on about the costs and money spend on them-
