Jovie's Home

Jovie's Home

Hi, welcome to Jovie's Home!

My name is Jovie and I am a Serbian/Canadian/American Expat Mama (married to a Spanish/Frenchman) living in and LOVING The Netherlands. Whoa, that's a lot of different cultures in one house!

I moved to The Netherlands with my husband in 2009 to work as international criminal lawyers at one of the tribunals in The Hague. Eventually, I became a KZread-from-home mom (but hubby still works in international criminal law).

I make videos about life in The Netherlands as a foreigner. The goal of my videos is to teach viewers how something works in NL; to share my observations of Dutch life and culture and to get to know my home country. I've learned so much from the viewers and commenters on this channel and for that, I'm forever grateful. I don't always get it right but I am always happy to learn. So feel free to share your thoughts in the comments - I'm listening!

Won't you come on over, kick off your shoes and stay awhile?

Dutch Weather: it's wild.

Something I learned working in the US a couple of times is that spending a lot of time at work is NOT the same thing as getting a lot of work done. (In fact it is not the same as getting ANY work done half the time).

There is a funny story about why Wendy's can't open a restaurant in the Netherlands...there is already one snackbar in the Netherlands in Goes,Zeeland called Wendy's so they try to sell the guy out but he said "No"...then they arrogantly took him to court to force a place on the Dutch market...but lost... very funny...no Wendy's in the Netherlands just because someone named his snackbar after his daughter...

A quick note on the healthcare thing in the US and it being tied to your job. I'm not sure a lot of Americans, myself included when I was laid off early last year, know that Medicaid is a free option, assuming you qualify. In my experience, most places accept it and the coverage was good. This was a *massive* relief for the reasons you mention, though the application process in my state was an absolute nightmare. But otherwise, yes, this is a stressful thing to have looming over you all the time. And it's fine to say you don't feel safe in the US when you're constantly in fear that someone with an automatic rifle could just start shooting at any time and place. No place really feels safe anymore, because you constantly have that thought and feeling in the back of your mind.

Cat seems kind of old to be bottle fed ; unless it's a medicinal liquid the owner must be ceryain all has been taken. 🤔 Still, the cat seems very comfortable with the procedure as if it's been going on longer than for a time of dosage .

The level of education went down in three steps. First: the Mamoet law. The levels of high schools became lower, so companies demanded higher qualified schooling. Secondly: there were not enough teachers, so the level of "Kweekschool"was lowered, also to get mor female teachers. THat proofed to be a disaster. Third: in stead of 6 classes at elementery schools, the "kindergarten"was added to elementary schools, and "classes"were canseled; they became "groups"also a downfall. Presently: there are teachers who cannot calculate or spell......

You are completely wrong about the tests at the end of elementary school. To decide for which school somebody is fit: NOT the IQ counts but the proffession/working level of father. This is the same as at the public schools in USA, where 70% has a destination for unschooled work. A left over from the period straight after war. Note: at my school, the advice for me was to go to a trade school; so I was getting a psychological retest of 5 full days. Suddenly I was more than suitable for the highest level.... I will give an information: in 1940 6% from the students at universities came from working class incomes. Until in the eighties income parents was decisive for study financing. Then even a bit less than 6% came out of working class. Theoretical it should be 60--70%. The reasons for that: all IQ tests are made based on a middle class way of life; next to that: instructions from state; but most of all: the children from working class have no idea what is studying is about. The differences in income with a technical schooling and HBO was during working life:2,4 million guilders, and with university 4,2 million. Next to that: on lower age with (full) pension, better quality health care, less working years. It would be time, to change that for several reasons; that should be the duty of the universities Next to that: canseling the nonsence faculties, raising college hours untill 30 hrs per week, less holidays on universities, and biometrical time registration for teaching staff, updating levels of faculties.
