Stian Langaas Moen What a twisted, pathetic being. By that I mean the little one in the flask. If you look at his emotions you learn what they really wanted. 1. Wrath wanted to control his life, 2. envy was envious of humans. 3. Pride wanted a real family. A father and a mothers warmth. The little one rid himself of these emotions, believing those were for weaklings, going against himself and what he really wanted. Even till the very end he never understood what he did wrong. He rid himself of his emotions after all. I am not sure if I should pity him or not.

Kyle Yeah. It's actually sad how he never understood why he was wrong. I don't feel very much pity about him after all, who to really blame are the ones who created him just for knowledge, with no regard for him whatsoever. I mean anyone who obtains a lot of power can become crazy.

@@killerdragonark1128 That’s a really nice way of looking at Izumi’s story! I think you’re spot on with Truth as well. The Truth is, we can’t always get everything that we want, just because we want it. Sometimes only a couple things out of the huge checklist that we want is possible, and that’s when we need to put in effort, some kind of sacrifice, in order to truly obtain ‘everything’. If Ed wanted his happy ending of saving the world, and his friends, AND to get his and Al’s body back, then he would have to take the extremely difficult path of not using the Philosopher’s Stone the first instance he came across it, and building up the friendships and allies that he did to make the team effort of bringing down Father and the Homunculi possible. Similarly, if the Dwarf in the Flask wanted freedom AND knowledge, then the moment he was given freedom from the Gate of Truth, he would have lost all that infinite knowledge and would have to work to obtain it again. Yet he wanted to bypass all of that. And so Truth taught him you can have only one or the other.

I love that an anime can create such meaningful conversation between fans. Fullmetal really transcended being just another action series and presented some really deep moral questions for the viewer throughout the series, all of it culminating in this moment. Basically the dwarf seeked absolute power and rejected who he was and thought that he deserved better than both himself (in his current form) and humanity. Ed gave up his abilities and accepted the fact that he was only human and was granted his desire. That's really beautiful if you ask me.

The implications are made clear when the dwarf asks who Truth is. Truth says that the dwarf has no belief in itself. And so having no true self-knowledge, it sought to fill that void with power and a distorted ideal of perfection. It was seeking God externally due to it's own perceived lack of self, as are all other beings. When the dwarf asks who Truth is, Truth admits that it is none other than the world, the all, and ultimately it is the dwarf's own self. The dwarf's own self is Truth, only it had not realized it. In the end, Truth gives the dwarf exactly what it wants which is to become God. But to become God, the dwarf can no longer cling to the identity of being a separate lesser self. So the only conclusion is it's own dissolution into the Truth that God is all. The dwarf must have foreseen this answer as it was the inevitable outcome of its life's journey to become the limitless self. There was no punishment because there was no sin. There was only the collapse of the false illusion that anything could ever really be separate from Truth. The ultimate despair to one's conceit.

I think your comment is the perfect interpretation of this scene. The Dwarf is a representation of the Ego who sees itself as a separate entity: an entity that can find meaning in his existence only through the endless search for power and knowledge. Edward on the other hand is someone who is able to let go of that thirst for meaningless power, because he understands that the true meaning of life is found in love and interconnection (the nature of God)

After watching this video, I rewatched the scene where Father/Dwarf-in-the-Flask Homunculus dies and meets Truth, and I noticed a couple of things that I thought were interesting (and some of them were also brought up by other people). The scene starts out with Dwarf wondering at why he was rejected by God, and Truth responds that it was because he didn't believe in himself, that he stole all his power from others, and that despite literally being born of a human, he viewed them as being lesser beings and instead stubbornly clung to his idea of God. Truth then directly states that in all the Dwarf's years of wandering upon the earth (which I might add was for a far longer period of time than any mortal ever accomplished, Alchemist or otherwise), the Dwarf-in-the-Flask never once grew personally. Apparently in the original manga, Truth also said something like "Stealing the power of God doesn't make you God, it just makes you a cunning thief". Truth even goes so far as to mock the Dwarf for thinking that he could surpass humans through something so simple and mundane as severing himself from his seven desires. So far, all Truth has done in this conversation is do exactly what he has always done: teach. Truth tries to teach the Dwarf that he didn't earn his power. He tries to teach the Dwarf that he was hypocritical to think that he was greater than humans, when in fact his origins couldn't be much more human. He tries to teach the Dwarf that simply stealing the power of God isn't nearly enough to make him anything more than what he has been throughout his life: a thief. Truth even makes a passing reference to the Dwarf's attempt to cut off his seven deadly sins, which in fact only served to impede his ability to learn and grow, for what better way is there to learn than to make mistakes and suffer their consequences (and few people personalize that concept better than the Elric brothers). Personally, I think that the only reason that Truth didn't expand on that last point is because by this point in the Dwarf's life, it should have been beyond blindingly obvious. After all, making mistakes and learning from them is quite literally one of most fundamental cornerstones of science, Alchemy, and the general pursuit of knowledge, which the Dwarf claims to have been seeking this entire time. Or maybe Truth did briefly try to point this out, since he made the mocking remark right after he made the observation that the Dwarf never grew personally. The Dwarf-in-the-Flask then states that he was just trying to become the perfect being, that he wanted to know everything in the world, and he angrily asks what was wrong with wanting that. And Truth doesn't respond, which I think has to do with two things: 1., there isn't necessarily anything wrong with wanting that, it was just the methods through which the Dwarf tried to accomplish this. And 2., Sometimes, people hit upon their greatest personal discoveries in the midst of ramblings that start exactly the same way as the Dwarf's conversation: asking questions. However, the Dwarf doesn't continue his line of questioning. Instead, in an act that highlights his utter lack of personal growth, the Dwarf has the audacity to ask who Truth thinks he is: "What are you? What is your name? Who do you think you are?". And it is at this exact moment that one of the most subtly dramatic things in the entire series happens: Truth stops smiling. You see, all throughout this entire show (or at least, so far as I can remember), Truth never once stops smiling. Because every time a mortal being, Human or Homunculus or otherwise, passes through his realm, Truth takes pleasure in trying to teach them, in trying to directly or indirectly impart to them one or more of the greatest lessons that life on earth could possibly have to offer them. And it's all so that they can grow to be the greatest version of themselves. Yet, in what was most likely one of, if not the single greatest campaign of enlightenment that Truth has ever embarked on in his own immortal "life"(?), he stops smiling. Because the Dwarf-in-the-Flask has not learned even a single damn thing in all his long years upon the earth. And nowhere is this made more clear than by looking at the only physical feature in the landscape during this scene: the Dwarf's own doorway of Truth. Remember, the Fullmetal Alchemist Edward Elric, whose own arc of personal character development would eventually lead him to hit upon the very lesson of humility that Truth was trying to teach him, has a doorway of Truth that is decorated with what resembles the Great Tree of Life. The Dwarf's doorway, however, is completely and utterly blank. Not a single character or letter has ever been inscribed upon it. Because the Dwarf has learned absolutely nothing, and never will. Instead, all that he has ever done is steal everything that he has, grow ever more and more in his own arrogance, and in the moment of his greatest boastfulness, presented his own idea of who he believed Truth/God to be as the absolute truth. Which, ironically, was the idea that Truth punished boastfulness in people. And yet, the Dwarf doesn't even recognize the very being that he quite literally only moments earlier tried to become himself. What's more is this should have been a moment of humility of the greatest degree for the Dwarf, as he literally obtained the power of God, only to immediately be brought down low and even outright killed by the very humans who he saw as being nothing more than a resource. And still the Dwarf does not learn. Truth stops smiling, because he has failed. And now he must exact the toll for the Dwarf's sins, without granting the satisfaction of enlightenment. And some people have theorized that the punishment that Truth bestows on the Dwarf to grant him proper despair for his sins is to take him behind the doorway, and grant him the infinite knowledge that he sought at the permanent cost of the Dwarf's first and foremost greatest desire, reflected in his very pursuit for power and knowledge: his personal freedom. And I think that this entire thing contributed to the apparently absolute and genuine joy that Truth displays in the following interaction with Edward. Because where Truth failed with the Dwarf-in-the-Flask Homunculus who sought to be the perfect being, he succeeded with Edward Elric who was only ever simply Human. Credits: @Captain2003 Rex

I really enjoyed this comment, solid break down. I really like the perspective of truth being a teacher of sorts. There is an irony in all that it takes, but when you think about it roughly before it does it imparts knowledge. Even for those who've rebounded their transmutations, for those who can survive it are given knowledge without compare a piece of the truth of the world.

One of the ways I view Homunculus as, is he's sorta a dark version of Hohenheim, since he was created using Hohenheim's blood. When he's taken to the Gate of Truth, his last words to the humans were that he didn't want to be bound by anything and wanted to know everything in the world, sorta similar to when Hohenheim was a slave. Another way of viewing Homunuculus is that his goals were impossible. He says that he wanted to be a perfect being. Perfection has never and will never exist. It's basically the natural order of things to have a flaw and when you try to fix that flaw you either make it worse or create a new flaw. As for obtaining all the knowledge, advances are being made in all areas and we're constantly adding to our knowledge, so it's impossible to know everything in the world. So not only were his growth and power facades, but also his dreams and aspirations; hence another reason as to way his Gate of Truth was blank

What i like is that the Truth condemns the Little One for his own shortcomings rather than just points out the result of his failures. We can all see the result of ones acts of cruelty but most of us can't understand the reason for these acts, whether twist or not. Its easy for people to argue away their actions by claiming that from their point of view they did it for a good reason (just as the little one said he did all he did for more knowledge) but when it comes to realising their insecurities which led to these actions they can't argue those away when faced with 'the truth' (just like the little one realising his own hypocrisy during the flash back to his conversation with Pride). And even when he came to this realisation the little one still refused to understand what he did wrong and as a result was forced (like most who appeared before the truth) to sacrifice the one thing he valued most of himself, in his case; his freedom.

The Truth's identity is based on individual perception and what individuals call him. The World, the Universe, God, he is one and he is all... and like he said he is also everyone. And he never chastised the Little One for not recognizing him as god, that would just encourage the negative stereotype of 'God' being a god of vengeance rather than peace. If the Truth had punished him for not recognising him as God then that would have made the Truth a hypocrite after having criticised the Little One over his own arrogance. Remember the Truth is not a single existence, he is not a single identity he is not a single anything, he is all of us and he is everything. Why else would he take the form those who approach him.

What makes this so interesting is that equivalent exchange is pretty much always in the series for everything that happens and it’s shown so clearly here. The dwarf wanted to know everything, gain power, and essentially become a higher being but nothing in this existent can come without a equal price to it. In exchange for knowledge, he would lose any individuality he had. In exchange for power, he would lose his weaker, more emotionally yet powerful side. And finally, in exchange to become a higher being, he had to lose his status as a lower being

What I think is fascinating is that he thought he could become perfect by expelling the 7 Desires from him, yet all of the homonculi (except maybe Sloth) end up having full character arcs and grow as people. They each grapple with the desire they were born from and learn from it, but Father cheats by just expelling them from himself instead of grappling with them.

I'll summarize why Father lost to Truth here. Note that flashback. Note what Father says to Pride is almost a complete mirror of what Truth says to HIM: "Truth is that which gives one the most fitting form of despair, so that they do not become conceited." Father said the same thing to Pride, save that he replaced 'one' with 'humans'. Father thought himself above the laws of the world, and, in the end, paid a very, VERY severe price for his conceit, only realizing far too late the extent to which his spherical ass was about to be kicked.

Does anyone remember when Izumi taught Ed and Al that all is one and one is all? It's my belief that this "god" is in each living thing , and since he is in EVERY living thing he is all. All is one and one is all. Ed also talks about the flow of the universe right before Izumi asks them to answer her question, which also leads me to believe that this "god" is not a separate character in FMA , he is just the flow of the world. When someone performs human transmutation hes not being a dick by taking what they most desire, its just the flow of the universe to take something in return so he might as well not even be there when it happens. Its just every persons consequence.

I think, though many might disagree, that The Little One is something to be pitied. It was nothing more than a representation of the arrogance of humanity, which exists in all of us. And of course we each carry our own personal truth, a true form of objectivity which usually keeps this in check and reminds us that we cannot transcend the fundamental truths of the universe without consequence. But there are those who are blind to this truth and who keep it suppressed under a veil of ego-driven conceit and the only way they become freed from this blindness is at the point of their own destruction.

It's why the Truth calls itself The World, The Universe, God, The Truth and You. Because all that external knowledge begins with the understanding of your own humanity. I find it sad how almost no one realises how human Father actually is. Father isn't just some guy wanting to be God because he feels like it. He says it's to become a perfect being, but there's more. He wants what every human wants: Freedom You see no matter where you are, there are always laws constricting you down: society, nature, god, physics, time.... Those are things that we have no control over, but they have control over us. This is what Father wanted, he wanted true freedom, to not be bound by anyone or anything, to avoid consequence, to do whatever he desires. And his plan makes sense, if you strike down/become that which sets all laws, then you are the one that is free. Now I'm not saying I justify his actions, just that this desire that he had is something all of us have, deep inside. And he dies poetically just like the other humunculi: he gains the power to avoid all laws, but loses freedom itself. He's more human than anyone gives him credit for....

Because perfect freedom wihout law is utopia. Its mean nothingness for me ( because it means that you are free from your desire, from the research of pleasure). the different between he and Ed is that Edwas able to be humble and that maybe the true hapiness came from the fact to accept the reality , to have littles moments of happiness. You seemed to have just talked about "laws" in terms of man-made ones in society, but I think it's important to take a step way further than that, which are the laws of nature and the universe. A central theme to this show is no matter how much we want something from nothing, that's just not how truth or the universe works. No matter how much knowledge or power we've gained, we still can't control everything, we're not invincible, we'll still suffer, and we're still going to die. One cannot truly achieve freedom from the laws of nature and the universe. One can try to continue running away from this truth only to become swallowed up by it in the end, or to understand it and humble ourselves to this truth.

FMA:B ending kind of reminds me of the ending of Escaflowne, because in the end Hitomi realized that she didn't need fortune-telling to help her find the future she wanted. It was absolutely unecessary, and all she really needed to do was just trust and believe in herself and all she had already, and she threw away all her divination stuff for good. And even the Villian of that story too realized, after observing Hitomi and Van's relationship, that he would never become powerful enough to conquer such a power. Quite beautifully written if you ask me.

What makes human great? It is the ability to move forward with those supporting beside you. Father didn't do both. All of his powers were stolen (philosopher's stone, god) and didn't give a damn about sins which he gave birth to.Hohenheim on the other hand persuaded souls of philosopher's stone to join his plan rightfully borrowing their power and loved his sons deeply gaining support from them at the end. In the end, father had to let go of Amestrians' souls because of Xerxersians supporting to Hohenheim and attack from his own son Greed. He lost his powers so easily because it wasn't his to begin with.

Humility is the answer. Live a mortal life and learn what you can learn in that time. Do not become god to learn everything about the world. Do not transmute humans. Everything comes with a degree of humility and that ist the reason the Elric Brothers and the others had to give something in exchange for there hubris. And because Ed had the humility in the end to say that he was always a human and did not has the need for Alchemy, Truth accepted his answer. The little one should have accepted his existence as mortal and part human. So he could have grown and learn more about the world. Hubris is a keynote in this series.

There's lots of takes here but I think I'm starting to get it. He cast out all of his 7 sins to better pursue his ambition without distraction. he tried to deny the truth of his existence in every way. The little homunculi never learned because he cast away his negative emotions which are pivotal to anybody truly changing or learning from their mistakes. None of the characters in the show are perfect but that's why they got better, this guy couldn't accept himself and avoided the pain of what it means to be human. That's why he never could achieve his truth

He is apparently Alchemical knowledge and the Seven Sins/Desires pulled straight out of Truth itself. Truth is All. Which, when you think about it, kind of means Father literally is those seven desires. Making his "children" living personifications of the desires and how they existed in people. Sloth was powerful, but was too lazy to use his talents; all Greed ever truly wanted was friends, and felt empty b/c he had none, and only wanted the world to fill the void in his heart, etc. Pretty deep.

I can only watch this scene with the origina Japnese voices. Nothing against the dubbed version, but something like this is so damn good when it's accompanied with the original voices

Williiam McDonald Right :) I finished watching Brotherhood the first time about 2 weeks ago. Now I'm currently at episode 45 in the 2003 version of FMA and after I've finished that I'm going to Watch the two movies and after that I'm going to Watch Soul Eater(I adore Soul's voice). How long have you been an FMA fan?

The dub voices suck in my opinion. Just tried to watch it and had to come here. I have nothing against dub either. It's just that some dubbed anime sound good, and others sound terrible.

He didn't believe in himself, a truth that he saw from the start. In the flask he could have done great things but he focused on what he couldn't do. It is a mistake so many people do in real life and one that sometimes leads to a fate worse than that of the dwarf.

  • @giraffedragon6110

What I’ve always found so interesting here is when the Dwarf rants he is always verbally rebuffed by truth but when he asks “what’s wrong with seeking answers and knowledge?” Truth says nothing. Because there’s nothing wrong with seeking answers. If anything, Truth mocks the method the Dwarf used to achieve answers. By asking “who the hell you think you are” the blank door behind the Dwarf becomes clear, he’s learned NOTHING.

Anyone know what the background sound is at the beginning of the video? It’s like a white noise type sound, I’ve heard it other animes particularly when there is an empty room or scene. Sounds very soothing to me so I was just very curious.

+Ajmer Thethy The reason why he ended up this way, is because there is no such thing as being perfect. A perfect being cannot exist, because if it is perfect, it cannot have flaws or desires or thirst. And if it cannot have those, that means it has already achieved everything, knows everything. That is impossible. Because the universe exists with the notion that every second that passes, something new happens. Its arakawa sensei's brilliant foreshadowing on the concept in alchemy to create the perfect metal. It cannot be created, even with alchemic logic.

The truth acts more like a system than something capable of actual judgment. If it weren't, it would be capable of realizing that someone forced to do human transmutation shouldn't qualify for seeing the truth and having something removed. If someones mindset, conceit, pride, etc if any of that really mattered to it, Roy would have been fine, it would know he didn't want to do it and that none of these traits were his motive. But it doesn't, it seems to be operating on a set of rules that apply regardless of any context. I think the responses and speech it actually make are more likely to be coming from the person themselves, a version without those traits, like pride, conceit, etc. The truth said not one single word to Roy before sending him through. It's also possible it is sentient, and enjoys punishing people "to keep them from being conceited" no matter who it is, or what they've done.

Roy wasn't flawless and wasn't completely innocent. True he didn't open the gate of truth but he had delusions while entering it. that is why he was "punished" altough it still isn't a punishment it's the EXCHANGE for having seen the gate (and thus being viser + knowing how to transmutate without circles etc...) Also note that there was ACTUAL punishment. Pride who actually forced mustang to transmutate suddenly became mortal and was slowly dying despite him not benefitting or even seing the gate.

I love this way of showing god... especially when he says "you didn't believe in yourself, you were just clinging on to God" It's so true for most of humanity, those who believe are waiting for something from god, those who don't say "so where is your god", but I see god as the one that's displayed here... observer, and about us, we need to start figuring things for ourselves without his help.. That's the only correct way to live
