It depends on the club and the class. Most classes are divided by gender and skill but sometimes you end up with a partner that isn't matched in one of those aspects. Also it was supposed to be a friendly training fight, not a UFC level fight. You act differently for those... allegedly. Unless you're this guy and have a score to settle.

I'll be that guy So after OP beat the absoulte living shit out of the pick me, OP stopped going to the gym. But after her partner convinced her to come again, when OP came to the gym again the pick me was with her husband. Turns out pick me was married with two kids. So the pick me husband came to OP provoking her and asked if she wanted to spar. OP accepted it. But the guy was 6 ft and 80 kg so he was way taller and muscular than OP

That isn't unusual actually. People who learn a second language tend more effort into that with their first language. So they tend sound more formal and well educated in writing and speaking the second language. However there's still room for error. It could be that there's a phrase in the first language that uses that description and translated if directly.

I have done some martial arts, but the school I went to teaches an interesting non-combative approach. You may at some point choreograph a match with another student, but it works more like a dance. Nobody gets hurt. The non-injury thing is big, you train so that you can be stronger in all ways. Some of my fellow students were in their’70s!

It’s perfect for me, probably the only thing I could manage because I am deeply awkward and uncoordinated. With OYD, I am competing with myself to improve. Progress is recognized on a directly personal basis. “The Way of Mind and Body”. It is the best physical “exercise” (it’s more than that, but) I have ever done. I noticed positive changes not just physically but with my mental and emotional health (I am clinically depressed and anxious). Unfortunately I am currently not located near enough to the school to participate.

1:34 stopping here. This story is starting to sound ridiculous. A sparring match? Get real. This would have all gotten shut down if the husband grew a spine and enforced physical boundaries and told her she was being inappropriate with the touching and rudeness towards his wife. So she’s grabbing your arm and clinging to you in front of your wife? You use your words to tell her to knock it off and that you don’t feel comfortable being training buddies anymore because she keeps crossing lines. You don’t quietly shrug her hand off and give weak excuses about your text messages being only about exercise techniques.
