Table tennis needs VAR becuase that edge/side ball was really tough to tell. Maybe it was side but it should have been shown on a display for the player when disagreements happens.

The ball was definitely edge. If the ball hit side it would have went down at almost the same angle. Nearly vertical. He was parallel with the edge and the ball came out at an angle.

I watched it a dozen times in 0.25 speed and it could go either way. I think if the ball hit the table a couple more mms inside then trajectory would definitely indicate edge ball. The fact that it did hit straight down didn't help Eugene's case.

Eugene shouldn't win any game. Look at this guy, barely moving around the table and just trying to win easy points. It's a disaster if youngsters try to follow this playstyle where you put fitness level at your lowest priority. Look at Ma long in his Mid 30's moves like a 20 year old. Now, that's something to look up to.

That's a disaster type of playing. He was barely moving around the table and was crying for a point that was in the side of the table (even if it was an edge, that's not a point to be proud of). People who are crying here for his point are pathetic too. I'm glad that Ma long found his rhythm after the first match and crushed him the proper way. Ma long in his mid 30's, still moves like a 20 year old👏🏼 Now that's something to look up to, not the other guy's lazy style of playing😒

How about putting a shock absorbing material on the side of the table? This way if the ball hits the side, it would not bounce off but drop to the ground.

He shouldn't win any game. He is a lazy, fat player who is trying to win easy points. He needs to improve his conditioning and fitness and then come back. This guy moves like he just got off his couch and crying for a point that was on the side of the table (Even if it was an edge, that's not a point to be proud for). He still managed to keep up with a high in the world ranked player through round 1 and I believe he would have done much better if it wasn’t for the side or edge ball point that probably messed up his flow mentally

It is more a side ball than an edge ball to me. Because the edge ball is usually bounced back higher and side ball just changes its direction.

considering the angle I would argue, that it was more likely the side. He hit the ball already on the outside of the sideline, and not from the inside as he tried to claim. He might thought to be right, due to his hand motion. At least he didn't create too much drama around it.

I watched this point more than 20 times. This is a very tough call for the umpire to make the decision. I myself after watching this rally many many times over and over, I would said this is the "SIDE". I watched this video the first time I think it was more likely the "EDGE". When I reviewed many many times and I would said this is still "SIDE". By the way, there is nothing Ma Long can say...! But I heard the sport commentator said "Ma Long did not say anything..???" and "He did not confess...???" Ma Long has no responsible for the decision...That meant if the umpire called this is an "EDGE", Ma Long could has accept the call.

My question is. It was hit in line with the table's line. If you drop a ball from on top of the table near the edge, to hit the side, the ball will fall straight down. If any curve of the ball hits, the ball will divert to the side. Did this ball not divert??

Umpires shouldn't be calling these sorts of points. Let the players play and if there's a dispute they can make a ruling at that point.

Even with the same fitness level, skill wise, Eugene is still far behind Ma Long. Ma Long is also ahead in confidence, experience and mental strength.

On the 2nd slow motion reply for the edge ball it showed that the ball touched the edge very thin @11.16.

I absolutely hate the camera view switching in the middle of a serve especially at the ball contact.

10:30 commentator doesn't know the rule amazing... If you're hitting the ball from the outside of the table, then the ball has to bounce UP, otherwise it's counted as hitting the side and you lose the point.

That edge was stolen from Eugene. I was disappointed that the announcers were not truthful in their take on the point, no guts. I played it back at .25 speed via youtube and it was clearly an edge plus the ball went in a different direction after it touched. That affected him mentally afterwards for sure.

Bad luck for Eugene, that actually was a side. Though I can see why he got so upset about it.

The ball initially hit the net. I would speculate that to hit the net first and then the side of the table is extremely improbable. The umpire should have sided with Eugene.

I think table tennis should used VAR too, the missed decision from umpire happen in wtt frankfurt when WCQ vs Lin Yun Ju, 1 point in TT is crucial

even the commentators did not know how to detect a side and a top ... it was 100% a side because the ball is coming from left hand side of the table and it hit the left side and went down... please not that if it comes from right hand side and hit the table it is a top but when it comes from left hand side and hit the left side and goes down it is a side 100%

You realize that the ball can hit the edge and still go partially down? It can bounce anywhere between up, down and anything in between (to the side that is) depending on how thin the contact was

@@kang_min_nal_ra when the ball coming from from the same side it is impossible to go down ... if it hits the top of the table it will bounce up or side and up but not down that is not a possible scenario. And by the way I personally think that most of the edge balls from the same side should be considered side because they are unfair in their nature. Specially when there is a doubt about them. The above example is not even a doubt from my understanding. I am happy to see what is the reasons how a ball can hit the top from the same side and then it goes down and not bounce

It was an edge there's no way the official can stay on the other side and make that call he was not that far too the side and the ball went over the net not around. The sound of the edge was clear and loud a side edge would sound different. Ma long looking like a deer in harks tells you everything. Eugene should have walked off in confidence when it happened his doubt made the official mind up that it was a side.

Eugene is arguably the best player in Canada. That is sad.
