Being able to have Magnus appear on podcasts to talk about these kinds of events is really special… we’re the first generation to have podcasts where the top players can share their thoughts with the public at length while they’re in their prime. Also, I didn’t realize Gukesh also broke Magnus’s record of being the youngest player to break the 2700 elo threshold… and now he’s also the youngest ever world championship challenger. Definitely pretty impressive.

By far the most honest I’ve seen Magnus be. Did anyone else notice that he kept looking over to David for comfort at critical moments? I think it shows their friendship is strong, the chesscom stuff keeps it very professional.? It’s nice to see a good bromance. David is responsible for all the positional knowledge I have around chess. The early days of the studio set airthings championships etc. before that I was purely calculating. He taught me opposite bishops, the power of open lines.

I think Magnus has a long future in chess commentary if he's interested. Although his usual tempered emotions can make him appear robotic at times, he does come across as a very objective analyst. He obviously (!) understands the strategic and psychological aspects of chess competition deeply, but just as importantly, he is able to effectively explain these dynamics to the rest of us. His willingness to either compliment or criticize any player, regardless of his personal relationship with them, lends credibility and weight to his comments. [btw, Off camera, Odin's voice tone, cadence, and accent make him sound like Magnus's twin brother - and his name is even more Scandinavian than Magnus's! 🤣]

@@kaviwardhmanthere is a Fabi's podcast from 4months ago on C-squared and he said that Wesley So was invited but he skipped it as at that time he didn't think his position is at risk. Fabi and Cristain were talking about how Alireza, Gukesh and last year Ding got entry and for him in Gukesh's case at least it was a fair chance with strong players but Alireza got entry through the tournament they organized with retired GMs and something similar happened with Ding when he had lesser number of matches than it was necessary to qualify. He said ppl didn't think Ding did wrong just bcz it was Covid and if Ding had played actual matches then his rating would have dropped. Both are right in their place, Magnus' point stands bcz that event was organized to give one more chance to Gukesh and I read the whole detailed story of how that was organized on Chessbase website many months ago

I really liked this interview session, but I do have one naive observation. Early on for some Qs, you can see Magnus wants to contribute but is not given a chance. For example a Q was posed to David about the shock of Gukesh win given that they had predicted others--David answered that Gukesh managed to win against tail enders, and you can see around 12:05, Magnus is about to say something once david finished, but no, the host doesn't want Magnus take on this--lol--that is odd, given that Magnus is the main attraction of this session. Next time, if yo ask important Qs to David, give Magnus a chance too.

55:38 actually nakamura had a high chance to beat abasov twice but abasov was extremely sick when he had white pieces and abasov forced a draw since he was too sick to play. that's the only major outside factor (outside of chess/strategy/tactics/gameplan). nakamura was actually the only person who didn't have 2 legit chances at abasov.

It is partly pattern recognition and partly intuition- which really makes a difference in speed chess. Even though players like Magnus and Hikaru are great calculators, they are better at speed chess because they have the intuition to play the best or one of the best engine moves just by the "feel" of the position, without calculating very much. Magnus himself has stated before that usually he just knows the right move, the calculation is just to recheck.
