    Hi Mike new noob to bonsai peep here. Got my first Fukien and slightly Trimmed it, I was too scared 😂. Thanks for your thoughtful video. Looking forward to seeing more. I’m learning the basics of bonsai but so many different ideas out their. Almost subjective in nature. Cheers from sunny Arizona.

    Thanks for the message Pete. You make me want to make another video one of these days! I have found the Fukien teas to be more of a challenge - I’m one for three! Here in Canada it’s pretty much time to move all the tropicals indoors. I envy your climate!

    Hi Mike! Welcome to the world of KZread creators! Great job on your first video. For these Fukien tea trees, I think we embrace the imperfections, and just enjoy it as a fun beautiful little tree. Otherwise you have to chop it all off and start over, and at least for me, these are just to be enjoyed vs trying to have a show winning perfect specimen. I like the branch that comes down.. as it fills in the space there.. and could even grow longer and look good. 👍

    Great video, I really enjoyed it. I got one of these for Christmas and it’s the first bonsai tree I’ve ever had. I cut it for the first time today, quite drastically, and not really knowing what I was doing. But if I go by this video, I did ok :) I never knew how much fun these little trees could be ~ I think I’ve got the bug already 😻 already I’m looking forward to getting more but I think I’ll learn a bit more about how to care for them before I do.

    Bequtifull tree. I think you did the right thing I always say that if you have to think about it it's probably the wrong decishon

    I would say 2 things. The tree is very tall for its trunk thickness. I would either allow it to grow to a substantial thickness before making branch decisions or reduce the height and allow back budding for a smaller shohin style tree now. The branch on the left is almost the size of the main leader/trunk. I would say remove the whole left piece but then you don’t have much on a VERY lanky tree. It really depends on what you are looking for. I would allow for some substantial growth in the growing season and look to eliminate one of the two trunks at the split to prevent an inverse taper at that location next pruning. Of course, you can take the slow and steady approach you currently are and allow for gradual thickening while making branch decisions. It just may take longer to get to a larger and older looking tree. I am relatively new but have watched a lot of videos and tutorials. So take my words with a grain of salt. Good luck.

    I've never pruned before but my trees need to be pruned. I have pruners but I'm still nervous about it. Is there a specific technique I should know?

    How do you get the trunk to thicken?

  • @JB-iz8tf

    @JB-iz8tf

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@chriskennedy8514 Let it grow. The more foliage the tree has, the more it will thicken. You can still maintain a general shape and ensure you keep only branches you want - but foliage dictates the thickness. Often times allowing one branch to grow several feet in length, a sacrificial branch, can be used to increase trunk thickness and be removed later.

    @@davidcraft4644 That depends on the type of tree, the stage in its development its in and what you are looking to accomplish. I suggest checking out other youtube channels or those who can provide in-depth tutorials such as eisei-en bonsai with bjorn bjornhold, Bonsai Mirai with Ryan Neil, Bonsai Empire, Herons Bonsai or just some of the top channels for bonsai on youtube.

    Hi Mike, I think that left top area can be reduced but I would have to see the tree in person to say which branch. It is a good start, let it grow and reduce more later.

    I would worry about the thickness of the branch as it competes with the trunk. It could cause inverse taper and also be out of proportion. This also has a poor energy balance which keeps most of the energy at the top and neglects the lower branches. Nice tree and keep up the good work.

    Very hard tree for begginers. Only wire long shoots before they go woody. Once woody they will snap if you try to bend them. Mine has survived and im a begginer so not impossible. Best of luck

    So at one point you moved saying you hope we can see it better then proceed to block the view with your left hand. Watching others you should learn to cut without using both hands. That keeps the view clear as to what you are cutting and seeing why. And once you get the tripod you can shoot higher and aimed a bit down to make the view clearer.

    I would chop the hole straight top par of the tree of. The fukien tea or carmona really explodet when i did that. The carmona have a bad habbit of growing most en top so you got inverse taper. And thats not Nice. So really got to trim the top alot to keep it Nice

    Agreed. It’s very slender. Reduce the top to balance energy or commit to a chop to get smaller branches lower on the tree. Otherwise it will be too thick at the top and the bottom branches will be shaded out. Whether you keep the height, or chop, it needs the foliage reduced so the bottom can catch up. I prefer to be a it drastic with my trees.
