Fujifilm XT5 One Year On

In this week's video, we take a look at my experience with the Fujifilm XT5 after just over a year of use. Is it a great camera? Do all the lenses work well?
Simply put, it's my opinion on the camera for my photography.

I think my X-T5 may well be my "forever" camera - it does exactly what I want and need it to do.

This was inspiring to watch. I have been shooting with the XT5 for 3 months now and I have really been scared to sell off my Full Frame kit. This fear is there despite me not even touching the Full Frame kit at all since I started shooting with the XT5

Size of body, reduction of weight, choice of lenses and reduction in size / weight, ease of use, quality of images (when I get it right 🤔) … are all a game changer for me. No regrets from Nikon full frames….. Good to listen to

Thanks for watching and yes I've no regrets moving from the Nikon to this as it's suited my photography and travels over the past year😁👍

I've got about three different cameras, including the XT5 and this is one I reach for a lot and I agree with most of the things you said it's not perfect but it's very good. In fact it's better than very good it's damn excellent and I don't really have a gripe about too much at all, to be honest and I've shot everything with it including weddings, funerals big events even in lowlight it's been really good. I've pushed it to 10,000 ISO at a recent restaurant event and the images were very good so I have really got no complaints with this camera. I also use it to teach other people Photography. I do community lessons here and it's a great camera to use to teach him MUM because it has the dolls on top. You can explain everything on top of the camera?.... It's really funny, I own a GFX 50S ii .... I agree it is a different league, but I still use my XT5 a lot, especially for events so I'm now using my GFX for my landscape photography and I'm using the XT5 for pretty much everything else so I have a great combination and those two cameras will not be leaving in my bag. I looked at the Nikon Z8, but I just didn't think it was a big leap from the D850 I really didn't in terms of image quality. I would just stare at my GFX photos for hours on end tongue out LOL. I know what you mean mate so cool. I've also got a Nikon 850 still and I don't know what to do with it. I do use it for some other things I'll probably keep keep it but I'm keeping the GFX and XT5 as a combination.

For the last 3 months I've been using a pair of XT-5's for concert work and although the images are sharp and the noise isn't an issue unfortunately the buffer sucks and the file size is a problem when you're shooting circa 800+ images on a shoot. I love using Fujifilm but unfortunately the X-T5 isn't the tool for my job.

Thanks Gary, that was great and really resonated. I switched from Canon to Fuji about 8 years ago and have loved everything along the way. Around the same time I bought a Pentax 645Z for a photoshoot in the Scottish Highlands as well as Harris/Lewis and Skye. I fell in love with the landscapes and the images from the Pentax, in a visceral way that the Fuji, as overwhelmingly wonderful as they are, has never made me feel. Unfortunately it was and is such a massive beast to travel with, and I do a lot of travel and landscape photography, that it just became too unwieldy to use it regularly; a trip to Namibia was so brutal trying to manage all my Pentax gear, a couple of Fuji bodies and all the assorted lens kit that it put paid to the Pentax as a workable solution. Since the GFX’s started to come out I have been rushing up to the GFX and then backing away at the last moment, just because of the system costs but watching this video finally has tipped me over the edge. Your phrase “I just needed that little bit extra” wonderfully captures the rationale for making that decision and the understanding of the visceral nature of the experience that I remember from my 645Z images that I have never truly felt from my Fuji shots. If I can come even close to that, I guess it’s time to stop dithering and start doing. My rationale for not doing so has been that I was in my late 70’s and I’m now 80 years old and so it was hard to justify costs that I’d never amortize. I have a Japan trip in cherry blossom season coming up in a couple of weeks and then on to Tanzania and Zambia so to hell with delaying, the shots will be worth it, I have already lost 4 or 5 years. Thanks for your video!

Great video and I really like your work. I currently own the Nikon D850 and Fuji X-T4. I'm thinking about upgrading to the X-T5 but I may hold on for a few more years before I do. I've thought about selling my Nikon gear but I decided not to after missing so many wildlife shots on my X-T4 - active wildlife and birds in flight aren't really Fuji's strong suit. Nikon outperforms Fuji for active wildlife. I do however prefer to use my X-T4 for almost every other situation especially street photography - I love the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 and also the 10-24mm for street - to me there's almost no better combo. Anyways - I'll keep an eye on your channel. Thanks again for all your great content.

Really enjoyed the video and your thoughts on the X-T5. Looking at upgrading from my X-S10 once there are some reasonably priced used X-5's on the market. I have to say your images are the best I've seen from any on KZread out of the X-T5. They are absolutely stunning. I'm sure you would also be an excellent photography teacher. Cheers from Sydney, Australia

Thanks for another great video. As an XT-5 user I would be really interested to know which X mount lenses you have chosen to invest in. Could you possibly list them, or even better, do a short video explaining your choices and describing the strengths and weaknesses of each lens.

Interesting to hear your comparisons with the GFX Gary. I've the GFX100s and decided to get the X-H2 for general Travel/ Walk-around. Are the images from this camera (and I'm sure the XT5) amazing, yes but its just not the GFX. I ended up selling the X-H2 kit and upgrading the 100s the GFX100ii as it addressed its few shortcommings, such as AF speed. I also picked up the 35-70 "kit" lens for "general" photography and this is working out perfectly. It's certainly nowhere near as light or compact but oh those files! :)

The files from the GFX are amazing aren't they! The GFX100s and the 45-100mm arrived yesterday for a review so that'll be in towards the end of February. The GF 23, 50, and 20-35 are also worth looking at in the future, if you haven't already. I haven't tried the 35-70 yet but it looks like a cracking lens. Thanks for watching 😁👍

@@GaryMcIntyrePhotographer the 45-100 is a super lens, and I'm sure you will be impressed by it. It is a bit of a lump to carry around though. I switched it out for a 45 and a 63mm instead. The 20-35 is a phenominal lens, and continues to surprise me. I can't see it ever leaving my kit bag.

Another great video, love that you share your stills while you talk. I was wondering, now that you’ve been without the Nikon Z system for a few months, do you ever have any situations where you think, “man I wish would’ve held onto the Nikon gear!” Or are you totally past it now, zero regrets? After running with Fuji X and Nikon Z in tandem for the past 8 months, I’d like to sell off one system and just focus 100% on the other. Probably keep the XH2, sell the XT3 and XT20, as well as the Nikon Z6 II (and its 2 lenses). Just curious if the missing of the old system subsides quickly or not.

Glad you enjoyed the video. I don't miss the Nikon z mount and it's a fantastic system. However there have been a few occasions where I do wish there was a full frame option for me and honestly that was after using the GFX or I wouldn't have. Thanks for watching 😁👍

A wholehearted yes IMO. I've loved all my XT range (not so much the 1/2) but his one seems to be the best of the bunch so far. Consider the XH2 as well though for photography. Thanks for watching😁👍
