    Thank you all for your time. Just to mention that I did in fact consider using different software for this demonstration as many believe Lightroom is not the best software for handling RAF x-trans RAW files. Knowing that the vast majority of photographers use Lightroom and that I had already run the files through different software, I decided that Lightroom was more then capable and sufficient of showing the difference between files for intended purposes. Thanks for your understanding.

    Most already noted that the X-T2 sensor has less noise in higher ISO from when the X-T3 was first released. Also this just shows how good modern sensor technology is. On a blind test, I doubt there will be a clear winner btwn photos taken by the X-T2, X-T3, and X-T4. While a professional might be able to see the minute difference by pixel peeping, it does not make a mark difference to most, especially looking at a photo in its entirety.

  • @JohnArmstrongPhotography

    @JohnArmstrongPhotography

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the comment, I decided to test the three without reading any info on tests being done before, and as I normally do not pixel peep, this was purely for interests sake without the intention of creating a winner. The vast majority of people viewing an image from any of these cameras, and I’d include the xt1, would not be able to tell the difference, professional or not. Maybe very large prints, viewed within a couple if meters, would show the difference. The colour difference though was the only information I personally took from this, as I do prefer and I think it’s obvious that the xt4’s colour is more natural and for those who have worked on Fuji files, blues and purples can be over saturated at time. Cheers

    That was an excellent comparison, even using Lightroom because it is directly comparative. I did a similar test between the X-T1/2/3 a while ago. Having had the X-T4 for nearly a month now, the initial general feelings about the image quality remains. The X-T4 is a super camera. Fuji must have done some magic with the software. It appears in the images to show greater shadow detail and dynamic range over the X-T3. Probably not a scientific reality but certainly a virtual experience when viewing my images. This is a much bigger jump than the X-T3 over the T2 had. I wish I still had the X-T1 to compare because that was a beautiful sensor. I only originally bought the T4 to get the new battery/ibis (because I can’t hold cameras steady now) and Classic Neg simulation. The better image performance was a bonus. Also the physical handling and ergonomics are the best of the range (the T3 grip left me cold) maybe that is a personal problem because of the shape of my hands. To me the X-T4 is quite a jump from the previous model. Thanks for your excellent video.

    The biggest differences are around video and autofocus. The actual images aren't much difference, certainly not enough to worry about. Need video, get a 3 or 4. Stills your priority? Get a 2 and spend the difference on a good lens. The 2 blew people away when released, still an amazing camera.

    Thanks for your comment Pete, good points. I know many people still shooting on xt1 and xt2 and loving it. My cameras get into the hundreds of thousands of accusations pretty early on, I generally upgrade to new because I have to. As I’ve mentioned in previous videos, xpro1 to xpro2 and xt1 to xt2 were the biggest jumps in the x series cameras for fujifilm, since then, smaller jumps. Cheers

    Thanks for the comment, yes the shutter mechanism does have a nice feel. One of the weak points for me on the xt2, was that after a lot of use, which I put my old xt2 through, the shutter mechanism would start to cease up and get stickier, the newer cameras have definitely improved on overall durability. Great to see the T2 is holding up so well, even though I find the noise on the T3/4 quite pleasant, or rather, not intrusive. Thanks for making the time to create this video, being in the film industry, I know its a lot more work than it looks. Thanks Lyndon for your kind words and bringing up some great points. I totally agree that in most situations, it would best to turn off the IBIS, I certainly haven’t trusted the claims that it does not effect image quality in all situations. I also considered turning it off before making my video and when I got the initial results in before removing Lightroom sharpening, I thought the entire test would have to be redone with IBIS turned off. I decided to go with the claim fujifilm made, that the IBIS does work well locked off, and thought it would cover me when people said I should’ve tested it with IBIS on. In my opinion, the image quality without IBIS can only get better now knowing the results with it on. I personally think it’s best to create a function button allowing the photographer to turn it off and on quickly. I may do tests with it on and off to compare in future. I haven’t done a video yet on this subject. Thanks again Lyndon.

    Hi John - thanks again for another interesting and informative video. And I enjoyed the Chuck Norris story! :) For me, the biggest disappointment with the announcement of the X-T4 was that the sensor was virtually the same as in the X-T3. Having moved over from a Canon 6D some years ago to Fujifilm, my biggest disappointment has been the noise at higher ISOs. I was keen to get the X-T4, sold my X-T3 to generate some funds for it and kept my X-T2. The noise factor from this camera is definitely better than from the X-T3 (and now X-T4 as well) as your tests confirm. So now I'm really torn - keep the X-T2 or upgrade, or wait for the next upgrade? Decisions, decisions! But one thing I would like to know - I shoot RAW and Jpeg, and when I compare the two files afterwards, the built-in software for the Jpeg conversion does a superb job with the noise reduction - much better than what I can achieve with Lightroom or Photoshop. Would love to know what settings they use for that. Anyway, thanks again - looking forward to the next video.

    Thanks so much Rob, I appreciate your comment and time. It’s a tough decision, for me the high ISO performance in my opinion between the bodies is smaller then some of the other important differences. It does also depend on your needs. I found the overall build quality and battery an important upgrade with the IBIS being a bonus. The XT2 for all its ability in IQ and noise, with the amount of shooting I do, was not as strong or durable then what we get now in the XT4. I also feel that even though the xt4 around 3200 and 6400 ISO has a higher noise level, it holds way more detail then the XT2, so when applying noise reduction in post, it should hold up very well. I don’t do much in camera jpg shooting, but Fujifilm certainly do that very well. I’m hoping in the next video to release some files for people to go over, jpgs included. Thanks Again.

    Thanks for your great review again! Maybe I've missed it in your explanation about ISO, but to me at looks like the shutter speed of the XT2 is always slower with the same ISO setting compared to the XT2 and XT4. Did I saw this correctly? Would it be a benefit for lower light situations or faster actions (wildlife for example)? Now I can understand that people, including me, have a some doubts to upgrade from an xt2 when it still fits their shooting style :-)

  • @JohnArmstrongPhotography

    @JohnArmstrongPhotography

    Thanks for your time and comment. You are correct, the shutter speeds were different, but its not because they are different cameras. Each camera completed it test shots one after the other in ambient light. And with the xt2 being the last camera tested with the light changing as the sun was setting and going behind clouds, the exposure time got a bit longer to match other camera exposure. Unfortunately I was wasn’t able to keep all shots at the exact same shutter speed. Cheers, thanks again.

    Hi John -- this is very helpful -- but isn't the general advice to shut off IBIS when shooting from a tripod?

  • @JohnArmstrongPhotography

    @JohnArmstrongPhotography

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Jimmy for your time. I definitely know that older ibis and lens stabilizing systems required one turn it off on a tripod, but as I was recently repeatedly told by fujifilm that’s it’s not necessary to turn it off when locked off, I took them at their word. I do know many using the xh1 say and I can concur, that once you hand hold over 1/1000th, you should turn off ibis as it does seem to effect sharpeners, and making one of the function buttons the ibis on/off, is recommended. This may apply to the xt4 as well, but at the shutter speeds I was using in this test, it doesn’t seem to affect it. If anything, the xt4 image will improve without ibis locked off, but not by much in my opinion. Hopefully as people test it more extensively, we will find out. Cheers

    I think that what you perceive as a difference in the treatment of the highlights is caused by the whites having more of a yellow tint on the X-T4 which make the highlights appear a tiny bit less pronounced, whereas the slightly blue tint of the X-T2 in particular makes the whites shine a bit more and so they look a bit brighter.

  • @JohnArmstrongPhotography

    @JohnArmstrongPhotography

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Beat, yeah I did consider the colour temp and how it affected the perception of dynamic range by warming up the highlights. After shooting this video, I played around a bit and warmed up the xt3 images in post, and I still felt there is a slight improvement with the xt4. I’ve also been contacted by some who bought and use the xt4 and they have also mentioned what they believe to be slightly better dynamic range. A few mentioned that in the shadows they see it most. I only picked it up in the highlights in my test. Thanks for your time and comment.

    Thank you for these comparisons. Is it possible that at the time that you processed these shots that LR was not yet really supporting XT-4 files? Otherwise IBIS may have been the culprit. I have an XT-2 camera that I have loved but it is getting a bit long in the tooth. For me as an almost exclusively still photographer, neither the XT-3 or XT-4 seem like compelling upgrades though. The better color rendition seems like a good plus, but it's a lot of money to pay for that. I do a fair amount of low-light shooting (events, concerts, indoor activities like chess tournaments, etc) and the increased noise at higher ISO's is particularly concerning. Also, sometimes, though, the Fuji XT-2 has trouble focusing in low light with some lenses like the beloved 35mm 1.4. Do the newer Fuji's focus better with that lens in low light? Thanks again.

  • @JohnArmstrongPhotography

    @JohnArmstrongPhotography

    Thanks Bill, the XT3 and xt4 are both very capable cameras and the additional features, like better focus, better shutter & build quality (XT3 and even more so on xt4) and addition detail in the images, makes them both a good choice. I would not be concerned about the additional noise you saw on the XT3 and xt4 files, they both hold way more detail at high iso then the xt2, and even though the xt2 may be cleaner, it lacks detail, so adding noise reduction in post to either XT3 or xt4, still retaining detail, makes for, in my opinion, a better image. I’m not sure about LR ability to read the xt4 file, it did read it, but maybe it will be improved in future with LR updates. I still think the xt4 image looked good and at the very least will improve without ibis. I took fujifilm to task by testing it with ibis, which they claim should work perfectly. I’ve been told that if you do shoot at high shutter speed, a 1000th and up, its best to turn it off. Thanks for your time.

    Amazing that you have to do this pixel-level scrutiny to see the tiny difference in sensor performance between three generations of cameras, spanning almost 5 years of development. Obviously, the in-camera stabilization and flippy screen are major differences with the arrival of the X-T4 but- at least for still shooters- we're as well sticking to the X-T2 and pocketing the change.

    The colour findings are quite revealing, I had always noticed a purple hue in the greys of my X-T2 and chalked it up to film simulations. You mentioned the lighting situation was variable and it changed your shutter speeds, so I was wondering if the dynamic range takeaways based on highlight control could be influenced by longer exposures, a.k.a. a slightly longer shutter speed could be blowing out specular highlights rather than it being a reflection of DR. Cheers

  • @JohnArmstrongPhotography

    @JohnArmstrongPhotography

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Goran, the colour difference for me was the most interesting and in my opinion, a welcomed difference. Yes correct, the ambient light was not constant, so there is a chance a slightly longer shutter speed could effect highlights. I decided on the time of day that would allow a slowish shutter speed, but not overly long, so I’m not sure that difference between the shutter speeds would make enough difference to effect dynamic range much. I have also heard from others who have purchased the xt4 that they are finding a slightly improved dynamic range, most notably shadow, which I didn’t see much of, so not 100% sure myself. Thanks again for your time and comment.

    Great review! Regarding color differences, is there an actual difference in color science between those models, or this is just the difference in Lightroom profiles? Do you see the same difference in colors when shooting JPEG? In those examples X-T4 IMHO looks better, but it would be interesting to see how that translates to portraiture and skin tones SOOC. Traditionally, Fuji has great skin tone SOOC but that rendering is not realistic (Fuji calls it "memory colors"), so if X-T4 has more realistic rendering then that can be seen as negative for SOOC skin tones.

    Thanks Toma for your time. I’m not 100% sure what was going on colour wise, and to add to that, I was using the xt4 before release, this may not be the case with production units. All settings were the same, including profiles. It was really the blue that stood out to me more then anything else, so I don’t think it will badly impact on skin tones necessarily. I did shoot jpg plus RAW and the jpgs has similar differences colour wise, but what I did find was that the xt4 did an amazing job SOOC over the xt2&3, the quality really looked great. I agree the xt4 images look best, with a lot more detail, an when adding noise reduction at high ISO, any difference between it and the xt2 was quickly sorted out. Cheers

    It's possible that the more visible noise in the high iso photos from the X-T3 and X-T4 make the images appear a little sharper than the X-T2, tricking the eye into thinking it has more detail.

  • @JohnArmstrongPhotography

    @JohnArmstrongPhotography

    Good point Mr Susan, I gave it some thought, I also considered the fact that the noise appeared worse in the XT3 and XT4 at high ISO, possibly due to them having sharper more detailed images. From what I can see and I’m not expert at pixel peeping, I’d say the xt2 has less noise at very high ISO and its due to it having less pixels. With a slight noise adjustment in post, the XT3 and XT4 would match it, but remain more detailed. Thanks for you time and comment.

    Hi Vernon, thanks for the question. I’ve used both the 5dmkii and xt2, both great cameras, but different. They both have more then enough quality for weddings, lens choice is also a big factor. The advantage of the 5dmkii is a battery that will last almost a full day, the xt2 would probably need 3 batteries at least to match it, also depending on how you shoot, chimping and so on. The advantage of the xt2, is the mirrorless system, giving you instant exposure and depth of field feedback in the evf and it’s size. I personally was happy to buy more batteries to avail of the benefits of a small mirrorless system. Hope that helps.

    25:26 The XT3 has more noise because it has less than half the exposure. You didn't do the tests properly controlled. You set the aperture the same, the ISO the same, but they're different exposure times. Same issue with the sharpness, noise can make images appear sharper than they are if the focus/lens itself isn't tack sharp. I think what's going on is lightroom is automatically normalizing the exposures between the two camera's because of it being in the comparison/candidate mode.

    As most serious photographers know, you can sometimes shoot two frames from the same camera & lens, using the same exact settings, and get slightly different color casts. And, no matter whether you shoot with an X-T3 or X-T4, you're going to get kick-ass images that are publishable. I routinely print 20" x 30" (51cm x 76cm) from X-T3 files and Nikon D850 files and, to the vast majority of the world (and many pros), nobody can tell the difference. Occasionally on some large X-T3 prints I'll see some artifacting, but, depending on the image, it's negligible. Pixel peeping is interesting, but it's mostly a circle jerk.

    Thanks for your time and comment. For me personally I just wanted to see if there was any noticeable evolution in the xt range from an IQ and ISO perspective. I didn’t expect to see any colour difference. In the end, from an IQ and ISO perspective, not much and yes I’ve printed many large images with xt1 all the way through to the xt3 and and with my GFX, all very capable. But the colour difference is there for sure, it’s not a cast, it’s different in each generation of camera. I took 66 images in total, three shots per ISO setting, per exposure, per camera and the colour difference remained true throughout for each camera. The xt4 colours are more natural, the other two more saturated, the xt2 the most saturated. In all my years shooting, I’ve never tested two or more sensors from different generations in the same camera model. It was interesting to see the evolution, but in real world shooting, doesn’t mean a huge amount. Cheers

    Tripod or not, wont the consistently slower shutter speed on the x-t2 affect the image sharpness? The x-t2 shutter is not as refined and vibrant free as the newer models, so the slower ss could cause slight image blur. Also the x-trans sensor on the x-t2 was infamous for its more smooth image rendering, not only in jpegs, aka waxy skin effect. Thanks for the comparison, looking at a used x-t2, so this video was very helpfull :-)

    The X-T3 is noticeably desaturated, but the T4 and T2 are the same, except for the warmth. I think maybe cooling the T4 very slightly will turn those pinks more purple and take the orange out of the yellows, as well as making the whites white again. Camera manufacturers do this often. They add stylised tint to the image for the trends at the time. Leica shooters have noticed it between the M10 and M11 also. Typically warm green is the colour negative look and cool magenta is the colour positive look.

    Thanks for the comment. This was shot outdoors in fluctuating ambient light in the late afternoon at sun down. When I was testing the xt2 the sun went behind cloud at that point, meaning to match exposure between all cameras, I had to adjust shutter speed by two stops. The exposure is exactly the same. The xt3 had more light, the xt2 had less light. If light was exactly the same and I gave the xt2 the 2 stop advantage with exposure and then matched it in post, then yes it would have the advantage. Longer exposure doesn’t always mean less noise, it also depends on the amount of available light. There is only one way to compensate for fluctuating ambient light in this type test to match exposure, and that is shutter adjustments. If I adjust aperture, then I can not compare image quality or sharpness, if I adjust ISO to compensate, then there is no point doing an ISO test. A more scientific type test would be in a controlled environment. Thanks

    I'm interested in this topic - I posed this question recently on a forum and by and large the consensus seemed to be that Adobe's issues with x-trans raw *used* to be a thing but really isn't any more. I've taken one image through C1, LR and Iridient and to my untrained eye I can't see any difference (Well, apart from a slight color shift and highlights etc which is easily changed in either one). I couldn't find "structural" issues with any of the pictures, whether that be "worms" or fuzziness or anything else. Is there a particular type of image that would better show up differences in the way Adobe handles x-trans raw (as I'd genuinely like to try), or is it possible that Adobe no longer suffer from this?

It used to really bother me but now it’s not enough of a difference to bother changing my workflow to another program. Everyone talks about this but most people use LR even though C1 does a slightly better job with Fuji RAWs. Unless you pixel peep and look for the differences, you won’t notice it.

    What we can see visually between all of them is very little difference if any in terms of perceptual image quality. Zooming in further the xt2 clearly has less noise but that is likely because noise reduction is applied in camera. The XT3 and 4 don’t appear to have this and retain more detail, then it’s the users decision to apply NR in post, I personally prefer this. Shooting RAW allows us to process the images how we see fit, however different cameras have different starting points, shown here in this video. It would be very easy in post to make all these images look the same and for that reason I would not let that influence a buying decision. However I prefer the XT3 and 4 because noise reduction seemed to be reduced or removed at higher ISO’s. Nice video

Before posting this video, I have in fact opened XT3 / XT4 and Xpro3 files in alternative software, and the fact that there was no significant difference on RAF files just previewing (not actually being edited), and with the vast majority of photographers out there using Lightroom, I decided to use it and thought it sufficient for what I was demonstrating. Cheers.
